TELL BONGO YOUR FAVORITE PIECE AND WHY, by stuey09 on Sept 29, 2007 13:34:39 GMT 1, I've been reading into Mark Rothko quite a bit and have come to the conclusion that the man is a genius. This is probably my favorite painting ever: Just by seeing it on a computer screen, it fills me with peace and tranquility. Has anybody seen a Rothko in person??? EDIT: Just realised someone else mentioned Rothko (above) Glad to know I'm not the only one. I thought I may have got slated as this is a street art forum! ;D
Take a trip to the Tate Modern. There's a room given over to Rothko. Good low lighting and really sets the mood.

No worries Baldwin and don't forget it's free entry. Fantastic way to spend a few hours at no cost.

TELL BONGO YOUR FAVORITE PIECE AND WHY, by GD303uk on Sept 29, 2007 14:06:36 GMT 1, Glad I didn’t mention Malevich's white square or Duchamps' Fountain, A strong reaction is better than none, I didn’t get it @ first and was intimidated by modern art and highbrow art, not understanding it was a real barrier, but aside from its meanings when you stand in front of something did you feel anything ,did it change your mood, evoke an emotion? if it did,, then it is doing ok, even if its hate.

I haven't been to the new Tate in London yet, but I remember the Rothko room from the old Tate, I found it quite depressing, but I guess that's really something for paintings to affect you so much.

That's perfect CBL. It is exactly what Rothko wanted from this collection.

Great thread this.
"New Tate" CBL. I think it's been there 7 years mate A bit like my dad who calls Heathrow Airport "London airport".
Pretty amazing that a bunch of abstracts can provoke a depressive reaction eh? I'm sure rothko would be very proud. For me there are no equals in abstract art, although I like some of the St Ives school over here for different reasons.

Also, my rantings were aimed at Rothko not anyone on this forum.

Your opinion is your opinion and you are just as right as anyone else. This is an art forum with many different opinions. You never know, they may be a load of shit. I think I read that Rothko never really discussed his work, so how do we know that they aren't just a load of meaningless blocks of colour! ;D

TELL BONGO YOUR FAVORITE PIECE AND WHY, by Va Va Voom on Oct 1, 2007 12:45:29 GMT 1, Love Rothko,s work, have spent many an hour in the tate enjoying the serene feeling his work induces .It does provoke strong emotions and I can understand the negative reactions it sometimes receives. One I have never been able to understand is the king of scribble Cy Twombly.....If any of you feel strongly enough about his scribbling please share it with me !!

TELL BONGO YOUR FAVORITE PIECE AND WHY, by scavos on Oct 1, 2007 16:35:04 GMT 1, At the risk of appearing shallow as it's all the rage right now, this is an easy choice for me...
Still eludes me. But one day she'll be mine.
Why? The colour, the detail, something about the black hair, those pesky lil goggles, and just because.
Closely followed by Denning's Minotaur Woman. Strength in defiance. A big 'f**k you!' to whoever it might concern. Something about her reminds me of a mid-twenties Madonna and I want to kiss her cheek.

TELL BONGO YOUR FAVORITE PIECE AND WHY, by Martin Whatson on Oct 9, 2007 12:14:52 GMT 1, I'm sorry for pulling this thread back up from the deapths, but I just had to mention my favorite piece (jeje, got a new fav. since my last post)
On the dvd named 'Inside Outside' there is an interview with the Os Gemeos twins when they are attending the Backjumps show in Germany. Where they also painted this: farm1.static.flickr.com/22/35066396_a06872cecc_o.jpg
But, in the gallery show they made their wellknown head on a box and inside made an installation showing what the inside of their head looks like (like a small room with a table, some pictures on the walls, some chairs flowers, 70's wallpaper and alot of other stuff. Then at the opening of the show they both put on skimasks and ran into the gallery through the crowds, into the room and smashed it all up with bats, and throwing paint all around. In my opinion thats one of the best pieces ive ever seen. A genius combination of painting, installation and preforming to make the perfect piece of art. Nothing to buy or hang on your wall, just something to enjoy.
Buy the dvd here: www.fuck110.de/en/Inside-Outside-DVD.html
(couldn't seem to find any clips from the movie on either youtube or google video)

TELL BONGO YOUR FAVORITE PIECE AND WHY, by Feral Things on Aug 11, 2013 15:35:24 GMT 1, 'Arctic Shipwreck' by Casper David Friedrich
An incredible piece on so many levels. The painting was intended to convey man's subordination to nature (this was painted at the time of the Industrial Revolution but is just as relevant in the 21st century) and it's also about contemporaneous events (a ship called the Hope which was shipwrecked trying to find the Northern Passage). Also Friedrich's elder brother died aged 13 saving him after he fell through the ice and the aesthetics give you a real feel for the bitter cold of the Arctic.

here's a couple more. I really cannot think of a living artist whose work I like more
And these paintings are huge. Really huge!

TELL BONGO YOUR FAVORITE PIECE AND WHY, by Feral Things on Aug 11, 2013 17:11:35 GMT 1, For me, Jenny Saville has always stood out head and shoulders above all the other Young British Artists. I can't remember who said that art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable, but I think Jenny Saville's work is the perfect example of this.
Warm Gun's Mr Jago canvas is amongst my very favourite pieces but it seems a bit rude to repost it in another thread so you can follow a link to a picture of it here.
