A Warning To Forum Members, by Harveyn on Apr 3, 2012 0:14:57 GMT 1, I have recently been made aware of the risks of posting images on public forums such as this. That particular incident is currently being investigated and I therefore cannot give specific details.
What I can say is that you should be very careful about posting images of your artwork and specifically high end originals. These images can be used without your knowledge for unscrupulous purposes that affect you as a collector, the artist the piece is by and the artwork you own.
All I can say at this stage is that you might find a piece of art that you own that you have never offered for sale has been offered by a 3rd party on the secondary market without your permission. The idea being that if they find a buyer they then come back to you and try to get you to sell the work to them.
I have been given the details of at least one forum member who has been accused of such practices.
With the above in mind I will certainly from this date forward be very careful about images that I post.

Hangup pictures do this but thats pretty obvious. Dont know if they use your photos though... When they come on here asking for a piece, its not because they suddenly have a passion to purchase a banksy.
Just saying.

I suppose this is why most forum members do not post images of their new acquisitions.
If you post on a public Internet forum you can't be surprised the images are saved / downloaded?
When kallwandy was in business, it had a software thing where you could not download or copy images. Could this be done here?

A Warning To Forum Members, by johnnyh on Apr 3, 2012 4:01:40 GMT 1, Must say I do not think that this is a reason not to show images on here as it does not effect the security of your piece. I fully understand that it is a pain if it happens but think it is rare and of course you can just say no I do not want to sell.
Pictures of most pieces are available anyway and considering how many pics have been placed on here or are on flickr sites there are no shortage of images.
The problem is that (lets call them) the middle man can communicate with you. I am more concerned to be honest about people offering for sale pieces that they do not own. I know there have been a few instances of this. I know this is also done by a few galleries and a few individuals. My bigger concern as opposed to my pics is that people are giving these people cash for pieces they do not have. Then they hold onto the cash while they try to do a deal. If they cannot do the deal as has been on a few threads here they keep the cash and try and palm off other pieces so that they can keep the money. So it is the buyer who I feel most sorry for as they really are the one being ripped off.
So think this is the real danger of this practice. Just my opinion of course and not knocking the point Neil. Please point out if I have mis understood. Just do not think the piece owner is actually in any danger and nor is the piece based upon just saying no. Again not supporting the practice at all and as mentioned it is the buyer most likely to really suffer in this scenario.

A Warning To Forum Members, by Harveyn on Apr 3, 2012 6:32:52 GMT 1, Johnny you picked me up wrong.
What I am saying is that you post an image of a piece of art you own. An image for people to see the work. You have no intention of selling it and have never offered it for sale.
A 3rd party sees the image and thinks they can make money on the piece by finding a buyer and then by going back to you to try and buy it.
It's not just immoral but illegal.
There is also the problem that if they try for 6 months to sell your piece that you have no intention to sell in the first place without success (maybe they ask for an excessive amount) then this damages the value of the piece of art you own. There are of course many other negative reprecussions.
Folks be warned this practice is happening and has just happened to me.

A Warning To Forum Members, by Deleted on Apr 3, 2012 7:10:49 GMT 1, Note that not a single pic is hosted in the forum... All pictures posted here are embedded and hosted on third party websites (such as Flickr) thus watermark can not be added into pictures here.
Best suggestion is take a picture with your masked head or there is a guy here who usually put a sticker with email address and prices next to piece (like a manual watermark).
Don't forget to remove EXIF data as well, especially if you take the picture with a smart phone with GPS... In Flickr, you can change the settings so that EXIF data are trimmed.
Reverse Image Search can help to find if your pic is being used somewhere else, like TinyEye - www.comptalks.com/top-10-reverse-image-search-engines/

I can take your pictures for you, Craig, as every single pic I take has got: me in it (reverse shot of a bald bloke holding a camera) or at least a glaring light bulb or the sun.
I'm intrigued as to how/why the practice under 'debate' is deemed illegal and how any scammer can actually make a return doing it.

Hi - I don't think this is impossible. A quick google turns up that there is indeed a setting within the pro-boards code to do this to all images
support.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=coderequests&action=display&thread=391399
- an (external) transparent image URL and/or a watermark can be added by pro-boards setting.
SILKEEEEEE - can you see if you can find this in the admin settings?

Hi Trev
Its illegal because its illegal to attempt to sell something that you do not own and do not have the consent of the owner to sell.
How the money is made is simple.
Just as an example. I post a picture of my OS Gemeos original with no intention to sell. The 3rd party takes that image and offers it to a select number of people. They get a firm offer and then try to buy it for less from me.
So you might argue that if I sell than no harm has been done. I would say its highly immoral but the real problem arises when you say no and you are unaware your artwork has been offered around for months on the secondary market.
I do not believe watermarks will stop this happening as stock images will be found.
