MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by BK83 on Apr 13, 2011 21:18:45 GMT 1, Katsu's piece should have stayed. painting over it ignores the very premise of the show. Shameful. First Blu gets buffed, and now this? Embarrassing to say the least.

VALENTINES LOVE POEM by banksy, by BK83 on Feb 22, 2011 22:45:59 GMT 1, It was also stenciled on an electricity box (the big green cupboard things, by the side of the road), near Crouch End I think. I'm sure I saw it there, years before knowing much about Banksy... and even then didn't realise it was by him. Gone now.
Yeh. Last I saw it was 2006... Think it is long gone, now.

Banksy Street Art in Los Angeles, by BK83 on Feb 18, 2011 1:06:12 GMT 1, My point is he never 'took' the spot old skool style, someone paid for it to be there. I bet if anyone can find an image of that billboard a day before the piece went up, you will see the artwork was hung at the same time as the banner.... meaning it was painted in a cosy studio somewhere else I've posted a photo of the billboard a day before it was hit. See above.
I don't think that proves anything! The company probably had two printed and changed them out overnight with the Banksy one.
I work for Calvin Klein, Inc. We did a similiar company sanctioned billboard takeover a couple years ago in conjunction with the New Museum around the time that "the splasher" was gaining notoriety in New York. We created/printed 3 versions of one our large billboard images posted them over the course of three days.
follow the link to see gothamist.com/2007/11/28/splashing_is_th.php
So believe me, if a company can afford to buy ad space like that in LA, they printed more than one billboard wrap, and Banksy was involved from the get go.
Welcome to the world of art and big business. Don't be so naive!

Banksy is indeed the guy in the rickards pics.
Banksy is not the breakdancing "legend" Banxy.

Mr. Brainwash sued for copyright infringement, by BK83 on Jan 27, 2011 15:13:51 GMT 1, If the original work is recognizable then you are in trouble... in this case very much so... I'm not sure how the law works, but obviously there are plenty of cases of artists creating work from "found" photography, news articles. Especially in the Pop art scene. Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton, Warhol being famous examples. fairly sure they didn't get permission for every photo used... or maybe I'm wrong?
I'd go one further. Richard Prince has basically made a career out of this sort of thing.

Love/hate this new artist?, by BK83 on Jan 26, 2011 16:48:06 GMT 1, Looks good does he have a website where we can see more of his work? Not yet. He just quit his job and started doing this 4-5 months ago, so maybe he didn't see the need yet. But I should tell him to make a flickr page or something soon.
Does he not have a computer? Why doesn't he come on here and see all the great stuff people are saying about his work and join in on the conversation?
Or is it that you are said artist and you've decided to use the old "my friend" trick?
I'm just always confused by these sorts of threads. It's in our nature to be proud and seek satisfaction in the form of human communication. Why not just be entirely up front about it?! No reason to disguise it... It just creates an absurd awkwardness that detracts from what you are actually trying to convey. Believe me, I work in PR, I know how these things work.
That being said. I quite like the work - almost a little Beastman-esque www.beastman.com.au/

Whats the most beautiful work of art you own?, by BK83 on Jan 23, 2011 3:12:47 GMT 1, My most beautiful work of art is " where's Waldo" from Mr Brainwash, so simple, so good and so unknown, exactly as i like it: "under" rated, "underground" and obscure! Edition of 15 prints! Can't even find track of this print on his website...My next two most fav. art works are from "unknown" artist from the mutoid waste co early 90's squat scene, and number 4 is from an artist called "cyanide", a girl who used to do some wicked stuff in the early 90's in London Ladbroke Grove W10 .
For reference.

Judge Rejects Banksy's Offer to Post Bail, by BK83 on Jan 19, 2011 6:28:12 GMT 1, www.artinfo.com/news/story/36758/judge-rejects-banksys-offer-to-post-bail-for-russian-activists-citing-the-artists-anonymity/
Judge Rejects Banksy's Offer to Post Bail for Russian Activists, Citing the Artist's Anonymity
ST. PETERSBURG—Banksy's anonymity has been a central aspect of his Robin Hood-like cachet, and the difficulty of accessing his inner circle has conferred an extra veneer of counter-cultural glamor on those who manage to crack its secrecy — just ask Mr. Brainwash. But the street art maestro's clandestine persona has its drawbacks too. Last Friday, a Russian judge rejected Banksy's offer to pay the bail for two members of the Moscow-based Voina art collective, who have been jailed since November as the result of a performance-art action that involved turning over cop cars in the center of St. Petersburg. According to earlier reports, Banksy had stepped in after hearing about the plight of Voina on the BBC and held a special online fundraiser for the duo, gathering the money required to post their bail, set at $66,000 apiece. But at a January 14 pre-trial hearing, the judge presiding over the case refused to free the two men, Leonid Nikolayev and Oleg Vorotnikov, citing a "lack of information about the person providing the money," the Moscow Times reported.
In other words, it sounds very much like the judge is using Banksy's anonymity against him. He also cited concerns that Nikolayev might pressure witnesses in the case if freed.
A post on the blog "Free Voina" alleges that the day before the hearing, Vorotnikov was threatened by the prison administration, who were angry about his contact with the media, in particular an interview he gave exposing unsanitary and overcrowded conditions at the facilities. "During the talk in the warden's office Oleg was blatantly told that, should he continue talking about prison conditions, the administration would find ways to make it worse for him," the blog states. "As soon as the interview came out, according to Oleg, his cell was searched and his cellmates were harassed."
In an ARTINFO Op-Ed from December, Voina member Yana Plucer-Sarno emphasized the political context of the group's anarchist graffiti work and of their subsequent persecution by the authorities: "Voina struggles against the climate of socio-political obscurantism and right-wing reaction that has overtaken Russia," she wrote.

The death of Banksy, by BK83 on Jan 9, 2011 0:14:47 GMT 1, Wow. Overreaction to nth degree from a lot of people on here!
RJ's blog - RJ's opinion. Simple as that. If you don't want to read it, don't.
Thought it was a very interesting read. there were points we have all discussed - either on this forum, or with friends - that are fun to ponder. Don't think we need to make more of this than there needs to be. Come on now.
Vandalog is a good read. Keep it up, RJ.

artist's to watch out for in 2011, by BK83 on Jan 7, 2011 20:50:44 GMT 1, Trong Nguyen Ryan Shultz Jaclyn Santos Miles Mendenhall Peregrine Honig Abdi Farah
Don't think that show made it to the UK. Miles might end up doing well. Bill Powers seems to endorse him - He had a solo show at Half Gallery late last year. I was unimpressed though.

OSCAR Nominated - Exit Through The Gift Shop, by BK83 on Jan 5, 2011 19:08:20 GMT 1, hyperallergic.com/16032/banksy-oscar/
The LA Times reports that chances look good for Banksy’s film Exit Through the Gift Shop to receive a nomination for the Oscars documentary category, completely destroying any idea that Banksy is some kind of anti-establishment bandit. I’m just surprised that Banksy could pull off going even more mainstream than he already had.
The BBC reports that Banksy’s film made it into the Best Documentary nomination long list of 15, but it remains to be seen whether or not Gift Shop will be among the final five nominees presented at the awards ceremony. The final five will be chosen on January 25.
Still, the final nomination is not exactly a sure thing. As David Ng points out, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is notoriously fickle about which documentaries enter in to the awards. Popular favorites often don’t make it into the final reckoning, and the same fate might befall Banksy’s self-reflexive portrait of street art and artists.
While it’s great that a film invested in the street art (and fine art) world is popular enough to be considered for an Oscar nomination, it just seems the height of irony that such a counter-culture figure as the anonymous Banksy might be personally nominated for a very public film award. Ng questions the implications, asking what might happen if Banksy were nominated and asked to go to the award ceremony. Well, the artist might send in a representative, or he could just accept that he is now a public art figure and do away with the whole anonymity thing. It would be nice to think that the latter might happen, but I think the former is the only possibility.
As long as Banksy doesn’t take his audience seriously, there’s not much reason to take him seriously. If the artist actually ends up with an Oscar, he’ll probably just think it was an excellent “conceptual” joke and part of his “life-performance” anyway. Boo. For more on Exit Through the Gift Shop check out Hyperallergic’s previous coverage of the film, including a review by Nick Riggle and another by Hrag Vartanian.
The Oscars ceremony is scheduled for February 27th, so maybe then we’ll all catch a glimpse of Banksy on live TV. Something to tell the grandkids Nevermind.

Banksy - What if he had released this?, by BK83 on Jan 3, 2011 22:15:29 GMT 1, Contrary to the general consensus on this thread. I actually quite enjoy this Banksy piece. It has all the makings of his classic ironic humor. I find this to be a humourous social commentary on the state of our children's future - We're literally leading them into a pile of shit. I think it also acts as a statement on the absence of the fundamentals of parenting.
Banksy is one of the great satirists of our era. The fact that he willingly incorporates his insightful humour into his art makes him all the more enjoyable.
