NYC recommendations, by sin on Jan 3, 2014 16:40:59 GMT 1, The Whitney Hunter's MFA program has a shared studio space down around 12th. If you can connect with a student at Hunter a walk through is always interesting. Since its super cold in Jan I'm not sure the Highline, a trip out to Brooklyn or even a run over to PS1 are worth it (RIP 5 Pointz)

Why am I so bored with stencil art?, by sin on Dec 22, 2013 17:30:46 GMT 1, I think there are some stencil artists that push boundaries or have really strong cutting skills.
Logan Hicks C215 Joe Iurato Matthew Curran
You are absolutely right in that stencil art seems to be a place than any hack with a half baked witty idea thinks they can be Picasso. The barrier of entry is really low, particularly if someone doesn't even have to hand cut or do more than 1 or 2 layers.
Plenty of other areas of street art to find inspiration but as mentioned above there are definitely artists who stand out as true innovators or have real skill in either cutting like Matt or in multi layer execution creating amazing images like Logan.

New Curiot Works @ Thinkspace, by sin on Dec 14, 2013 17:52:08 GMT 1, Love them. I saw his clusters in his last show and loved them and I really dig how he's expanded on the concept and expanded his work outside the canvas. While I am ever curious about how his content will evolve, he's surely evolved his execution and its exciting.

Visit MIAMI ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by sin on Dec 1, 2013 21:01:19 GMT 1, Yeah - We are there all week. All the mural work has looked good. Was down last weekend to see some pieces go up, missed this weekend because of shopping / decorating / weather. FUCK I hope this rain shit stops next week.
Lots of cool indie shows this year along with some exciting moves on the fair side. (Scope on the beach being the most exciting)

I however have zero patients for obtuse dickshits who cant opperate a business and make it harder for the rest of us trying to do something meaninful.

Laminate Most Wanted:Sandra Chevrier featuring cancelled , by sin on Nov 27, 2013 0:19:50 GMT 1, The addy on the domain is wrong. The company name isnt Laminate, its Drakun Lundon Limited. Its address changed on Feb 2013. Its revenue upon founding was effectively 0.00, which makes sense why he presells editions in an attempt to fund production. People in the UK can reasonably file a class action case, which would be entertaining, particularly in discovery because you would end up calling all the aritsts in question into the cause, applying real pressure to the guy. People outside the UK can only effectivly cause action by attacking the shopping cart (big cartel) or processors (v,m,a,d) to initate fraud / chargeback investigations.

Laminate Most Wanted:Sandra Chevrier featuring cancelled , by sin on Nov 26, 2013 17:33:24 GMT 1, I have submitted a request to Websters to change the definition of Pikers to see Laminated Most Wanted. I went through the same bullshit on the Faile order and would love to get a chance to kick this guy in the balls.

High-Lights of 2013 Shows / Prints Ect. , by sin on Nov 26, 2013 0:20:02 GMT 1, Shows
Hopper - The Whitney Possibly my favorite show ever but absolutely of this year. It's the first time I saw certain pieces at all, the first time I was really able to see his process come to life and the first time I really got to see and understand his stylistic journey in such detail.
Brian Adam Douglas - Andrew Edlin Gallery I'm partial but seeing Brian's work in a gallery setting was affirming and having our piece used in the New York Times story on the show really was a treat.
Print Release
I've been off prints as a rule but
Faile - Les Ballets de Faile was one of the few multiples I bought this year and I absolutely love it.
Kozyndan - They did a subscription thing around the holidays last year which includes a piece a month all year long. Its been a real treat, the latest was a hand painted puzzle and each item has been super coop to get.

Retna โข Braddock Tiles, by sin on Nov 25, 2013 20:48:06 GMT 1, Frankly surprised they lasted as long as they did. To buy all of them would have only taken around $11,000. Easily could have paid out $50,000 and possibly more.

Etam Cru ๐ต๐ฑ Sainer & Bezt โข Street Art โข Print Release , by sin on Nov 23, 2013 20:31:31 GMT 1, Wow, didnt realize the Paris show sold out, thats awesome news. Their whole crew is really on point. Sainer and Bezt worked their asses off in Richmond for the Jelly Jar mural. Glad to see them get such passionate support.
All accolades aside I dont get the $460 for the litho but I'm sure I'll reread this post 2 years from now and go SHIT WHY DIDNT I BUY THAT WHEN I COULD?!?!!
I like to see some new Bezt pieces / prints as I really like his more Muchaesque subjects. I also would love to see these guys do some Beksinsky(sp) influenced works. They noticed his images on my phone when we met and being that there is such a tip of the hat to Mucha in their works I would be stoked if someone from this new polish movement gave a similar tip of the hat to Beksinsky.

Street art legacy?, by sin on Nov 16, 2013 22:43:15 GMT 1, I come back to this topic often out of curiosity.
Recently driven back to the idea by an article I read regarding a rather forgotten art movement, Neo Expressionism. www.artinamericamagazine.com/news-features/magazine/neo-expressionism-not-remembered
It is possible that 10 - 20 years from now that urban contemporary, street art, post graffiti, whatever, will be forgotten?
It so, who would remain?
If not, how will it be viewed, and who would be considered its key players?
First, regarding the evaporation of the movement as a whole. I think this is unlikely, solely because there are many variants within the genre. If part of the movement is discarded other parts of it would likely be remembered. The variations within the movement are great. From street works transitioned to gallery environment to graffuturism pieces that are street type executions of abstract works, to post graffiti works by artists like Brian Adam Douglas, David Ellis, etc whose gallery works borrow from but depart considerably from their street works.
So rather its not who will be viewed but who will remain.
Its seems clear that Banksy, Shepard, KAWS will remain. Other artists who have had institutional interests would likely be remembered. Os Gemeos, Swoon, etc. However, artists who dont put together bodies of work but focus more on the ephemeral like Blu, Phlegm, etc will likely be largely forgotten by the mainstream of art history though valued greatly by groups. I believe you will likely see an expansion of what is retained and valued in our modern world where people with an affinity for an artist can document, share and connect with other like minded people. This I believe is the most exciting part of the discussion. A world where nothing need die because the curating is democratized.
