New book out now - "The Street Art World", by Peter Bengtsen on Sept 22, 2018 8:49:22 GMT 1, Last night I gave an introductory talk at Panora Arthouse Cinema in Malmรถ. The occassion was the premiere of the documentary film The Man Who Stole Banksy by Marco Proserpio. The film tells the story of one of the removed Bethlehem murals attributed to Banksy.
The talk discussed the status of decontextualised wall paintings as works of art and pointed out that such objects generally have a weak position on the art market.

BAST Artwork, VALUATION, by Peter Bengtsen on Sept 5, 2018 19:25:38 GMT 1, A small collage sold on ebay a couple of weeks ago for $1150. Item number 113161898975 There's also a no reserve auction for Onassis on ebay at the moment - item 192644267805 Thank you, can't find the first collage but did notice one that had sold and a couple more currently up. With regard to Onassis, it always seemed to be lower in the popularity ratings . It's actually one of my favourite uncompromising BรST's . Have had a couple of quiet enquiries about the og bits so will dig some more. Thanks guys. Feel free to chip in anyone else.

Huge Palestinian Banksy back up for sale, by Peter Bengtsen on Aug 22, 2018 19:14:25 GMT 1, "Back up for sale" doesn't seem quite right considering the co-owners - at the time of purchase MultiplesInc Projects (Peter Hvidberg) and Still Kicking Gallery (Bรถrje Bengtsson and Kenneth Witt) - have been trying to shift this piece since 2014.
Thank you for your post Peter Bengtsen. Their not making a good job of selling it . I would have thought a Banksy piece like this would sell quicker than 3 to 4 years.
Is it a Banksy piece, though?
No major auction house will touch pieces ripped from the street, in part because these will usually not get a certificate of authenticity from Pest Control. IF a certificate of authenticity were to be given for a removed street piece, it would confirm not only that the street work was originally by Banksy, but also that the removed object is still to be considered a work of art in its current form. From a market point of view this is important because site-specific artworks, which the donkey painting is a clear example of, are arguably ruined once removed, and so should no longer necessarily be considered a work of art by the initial creator.
Most collectors would be apprehensive about paying large sums of money for work that is not authenticated. Add to the above question about the object's questionable status as art the concern that the wall piece for sale could be an outright forgery.
In lieu of formal authentication, sellers will often provide other types of provenance, e.g. images of the removed piece at its original site, images/video of the removal process, documentation on the artist's website/social media of the work being created, etc. While such documentation may seem convincing, it does not remove concerns about the object's status as art created by a specific author (rather than simply a piece of wall with some paint on it). It also does not ensure that the object the buyer receives is not a forged copy of the original street work.
These are some of the reasons decontextualised street artworks tend to not fare well on the art market. Another reason, as stated by godโs ultimate noise, is that most people who are into this type of art believe that street artworks belong in the street where they were made.
Edit: I wrote a book chapter about this a few years back, which is freely available here.

Harland or kaws, by Peter Bengtsen on Aug 18, 2018 18:52:48 GMT 1, Anyone else notice the discrepancy in the spacing of letters in Saltz's stencil and stencil painting?
itโs a stencil. You can paint parts of it and move it around to part other parts. It doesnโt have to match up.
I understand that.
However, I'd think it would be easier to incorporate the right spacing into the stencil from the beginning, rather than moving it around during painting.
Also, as avec art noted above, there are other elements in the painting that don't match up to the stencil.

Pejac โข A Forest Print, by Peter Bengtsen on Aug 13, 2018 18:46:49 GMT 1, I am not sure it can work like that? Wouldn't the replacement be numbered the same as the original to keep the edition right? I think this one would need to be destroyed? Correct Bren
Indeed. While it is a nice sentiment, allowing buyers to keep a damaged print would compromise the integrity of the edition. There was a discussion about this here a while back.

Pejac โข A Forest Print, by Peter Bengtsen on Aug 13, 2018 15:22:40 GMT 1, Oh man! Was it left in the bath? Absolutely no reason for this to be posted on here though really. Itโs a retail transaction. Just message the seller and youโll get a new print or your money back and theyโll claim on the insurance. Simples..
I'd say there is every reason for the OP to post this on here.
Clearly they are/were unsure about how to best handle the situation. There are people on the forum - yourself included - who can offer sound advice on the matter.
