Sandra Chevrier โข La cage et la dignitรฉ, by Howard Johnson on Mar 12, 2016 1:26:51 GMT 1, Warhol btw did thousands of portraits. It's what made him famous. His bread and butter. hello??? Yes Warhol's work largely consisted of portraiture, but my point was more about diversification of themes and subjects. With each new body of work Warhol explored different themes through the use of portraiture, with each body of work enduring for different reasons. The use of irony in his elevation of consumer products to high art remains one of the most poignant commentaries on the fine art industry to this day, while his portraits of endangered species sought to communication the strength and dwindling beauty of animals throughout the world in hope of helping conservation efforts. Its easy to look at his work from a macro viewpoint and say "that all looks the same" but a close examination of his career demonstrates a broad exploration of subject matter.
In contrast, Cheerier appears to be rehashing the same basic images and themes, albieit with minor deviations. Art is subjective and I certainly would never say one artist is inherently better then another, I just wonder if this sort of work turns out to be a "one trick pony." That being said, I totally agree with your assessment of her career thus far and hope that we see her amazing painting techniques applied to different themes in the future.

Sandra Chevrier โข La cage et la dignitรฉ, by Howard Johnson on Mar 12, 2016 0:34:06 GMT 1, Btw I didnt get her work straight away. I used to see it as gimmicky, hyped... But she's a self taught artist and had some really strong shows. The development in her style over short space of time is another level. And what I enjoy most from her work is about the technique. It's artisan. In no doubt some of her images are iconic imo. Not the timed release, but a few others. I bet collectors do hang them with Warhol prints. Why not?
I would be interested in hearing your views on the longevity of her work. When I first saw her stuff at Black Apple (crazy cheap compared to her work nowadays) I thought it was really clever and poignant - i.e. the whole theme of trapped women and superheroes challenging gender norms, blah blah blah. But after years of essentially the same image over and over, I feel like the theme has been properly explored and each subsequent release kind of cheapens the whole body of work, although I must admit her execution continues to get better. I feel the same way about D*face, as his whole pop deconstruction by appropriating Lichtenstein was sort of brilliant at first, but now feels completely overdone.
I only mention this because you kind of compared her to Warhol. While Warhol certainly didn't reinvent the wheel every time he released a new body of work, each one examined a different theme or subject matter while staying aesthetically and singularly "Warhol." I personally hope that Ms. Chevrier follows suit, as I think her amazing painting technique could be put to better use the the constant re-hashing of the idea that launched her career.

Banksy Unsigned Prints, by Howard Johnson on Feb 12, 2016 23:31:15 GMT 1, You could get a wide variety of posters, ie Tesco Bomb, Soup Cans, Monkey Parlement, ect. Other than that your probably going to have a hard time finding any other pieces in that price range unless they are heavily damaged. Add 2-3k and you'll be be able to afford a nice variety of pieces.

Gallery accounts/Multiple accounts, by Howard Johnson on Feb 12, 2016 23:20:12 GMT 1, I'd also like to get a bit more clarification on this issue. Like many other members here I often sell art to finance my own collection, and recently opened up a website. Should I now switch my status to "gallery"? I keep my collection and website listings separate, and do not "flip" pieces purchased from members.

FS: Nick Walker, D*Face, Eine (PRICE DROP), by Howard Johnson on Feb 5, 2016 0:15:47 GMT 1, Love the Eine Exciting but it would worry me a little that it's been in a tube for 8 years. The problem is that it's huge. It sure won't fit in my A1 portfolio. Seriously though, is there any difference between a print that's been tubed for 6 months compared to one that's been tubed for 8 years? I honestly don't know. I believe there is a fear that some prints may permanently warp or that when a print is unrolled the ink could crack. I've personally never experienced either of these issues storing a print rolled for about a year. However, these will undoubtedly take a while to flatten out before they can be framed, especially if they were printed on thick stock.

Banksy HMV Print, by Howard Johnson on Feb 3, 2016 19:57:03 GMT 1, This print is worthless without a COA. Authentication boards don't last forever, its better to get it out of the way sooner rather then later so that if it is fake you still may be able to return it.

Banksy HMV Print, by Howard Johnson on Feb 3, 2016 17:27:36 GMT 1, I recently had to send something into PC from the US and it's a painless process. They use a shipping service that sends you postage and all you do is print it out and drop the piece In the mail. I was quoted $160 for postage both ways.

FS: Shepard Fairey and Retna , by Howard Johnson on Feb 2, 2016 21:16:55 GMT 1, Got hit with yearly bar dues yesterday and would like to sell one of these. The Retna has a couple minor dings, and the Fairey has had tack holes in the corners restored (it is now "mint" though obviously should not be classified as such). I'd ask that the buyer please cover the transaction fees. Happy to share more pics via PM. Thanks!
Shepard Fairey - "Big Brother" (1999) 24 x 34 - Signed/Numbered/dated - Edition: 200 -Pricing criteria: I've never seen one of these sell before so the price is based on comparable prints from this era (usually around $1k) with a bit less to account for the restoration. -Fun facts: To my knowledge this was one of the first large format editions done by the artist, as well as the artist's first rendition of "big brother." The overlay of the star and the face results in the illusion that the eyes are glowing.
Local Pickup: 800$ - Shipped USA: $825 - Shipped EU/UK: $875
Retna - "The Future in Her Eyes" (2011) 20" x 16" - Signed/Numbered - Edition: 100 -Pricing Criteria: Last recorded sale on Ebay for $922, so I've priced this one 200$ less (give or take) to account for the damage. -Fun Facts: The child in the picture is the artist's mother. The paper stock has a slight sparkle to it, it sort of looks like diamond dust but not so bright.
Local Pickup: 675$ - Shipped USA: $700 - Shipped UK/EU: $725

D*Face Beethoven Bust by SYNC, by Howard Johnson on Jan 24, 2016 3:08:27 GMT 1, This is a great concept and design but I feel like the execution is lacking. I'd love one that looked like marble and didn't have the gigantic "Beethoven" engraved on there.

Your latest Art Purchase?, by Howard Johnson on Jan 21, 2016 21:36:42 GMT 1, ^^ Very nice. Assuming that's an open edition? Thank you! I did a bit of research on it and a couple auction listings claim its an edition of 1000. I asked the gallery contact and he claimed their records don't have an exact edition number for it, but they produced their exhibition editions in either 500, 1000, or 2000 so its one of those three lol.

Your latest Art Purchase?, by Howard Johnson on Jan 21, 2016 21:23:32 GMT 1, Thought this one was worth a share. Its a limited edition offset lithograph from Jean-Michael Basquiat's last exhibition before his death. Considering most of his editions were published posthumously its great to find a piece that he designed and was published with his blessing. The inks are super thick too, it almost looks like a screenprint. The gallery still has a few available if anyones interested (no affiliation just passing it on) - yvonlambert.tictail.com/product/jean-michel-basquiat-print

Andy Warhol ๐บ๐ธ Real or Fake? โข Sunday B. Morning Print, by Howard Johnson on Jan 10, 2016 1:13:10 GMT 1, 99% of Sunday B Morning prints have no collectable value as they are unofficial reproductions, but quite nice for those who just want something nice for the walls. However, The first edition of Marilyns are somewhat connected to Warhol.
The story goes that Sunday B Morning was created by a group of printers that left Warhol's factory in the late 60s to establish thier own print shop. They took the original Marilyn screens with them and produced a second Edition of the prints. These were initially unauthorized, but Warhol later gave hem his blessing and even signed a few. They then went on to print 3 more editions that were completely unauthorized.
So in other words, you have Warhols printers making a print from his screens and (eventual) blessing. That doesn't make that first edition "authentic" but many feel as though it's close enough to an official edition to find value in it.

POW IMage 2010, by Howard Johnson on Jan 5, 2016 3:43:38 GMT 1, I Just PMed L-Roy, but I have a couple of these prints if people are interested. I originally had about 7 of them, all in different colors. They were donated by a London Gallery for a charity art show I hosted last year. According to the gallery owner, they were designed by Banksy and printed by POW to promote a Paul Insect show. I remember finding an article confirming that they were by Banksy citing that the image is hanging in Banksy's studio (a still from Exit Through the Gift Shop), and a mixed media piece featuring the image was apparently sold as a Banksy during one of the Santa Ghetto exhibitions. I cant really verify this info one way or the other, but they are cool posters none the less.

DFace Japanese Rising DDog, by Howard Johnson on Dec 16, 2015 22:06:47 GMT 1, This piece is often referred to as "Rising Dog" or "Japan Rising." I believe it is a screen print edition of 10 on thin wheatpaste stock. In terms of price, its going to depend heavily on your buyer. Its a rare piece, so a diehard fan might pay as much as 500-600 GBP. On the other hand, the image isn't particularly compelling and the thin stock creates noticeable waviness so I would conservatively expect around 200-400 GBP for a private sale. Hope that helps.
