The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by agu on Jun 28, 2016 17:13:32 GMT 1, Would doing that mean breaching some human rights issue about being forced to work? I would argue you are not forcing anyone to work. It is the desire to be warm dry and an intolerance to a zero calorie diet that drives me.... that and the desire to own art.

The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by agu on Jun 28, 2016 17:10:18 GMT 1, Talking to a guy that works for the NHS today. Says he has a brother that works for Stobarts as a driver. They have a couple of Eastern Europeans that work as drivers here but their wives and families live in Europe still but they claim all sorts of benefits for their family that is sent back home? I'm guessing there are smart people on here that can either tell me this doesn't happen or if it does how or why is that possible? For this reason amongst others the NHS guy ticked the leave box. This does happen, but the dad is paying tax here and helping the economy etc etc etc. Im pretty certain the same happens with some Brits living abroad claiming some sort of benefit from the UK Not referring to you mate - but there are alot (not all) of british people who are on benefits that sit on their arse not helping the economy and have no intention of doing so - ever. Then they vote to kick the tax paying guy from Stobarts out of the country. Not being funny, but he is paying for them to live off the state. Good luck when they get a choice of taking a job or nothing at all to fill the gaps in people not being able to fill roles that immigrants would take. They will not have the excuse anymore of foreigners, so get down to it and take what you are given as a job or go somewhere else.
The short answer is "yes" they can and it does happen. As far as I know the amount of money is bugger all in the grand scheme of things circa ยฃ500k a week, as as FR rightly points out they are paying tax here so we probably benefit overall. Bearing in mind a driver could be employed at "either end" of their route and the UK probably compares favourably.
The real problem is ...it looks bad. Imagine you are stuck on a shitty zero hours contact, Phillip Green has stolen your pension and the rich are hiding their money abroad and you can do nothing. But I believe, that I have, this one time, been given the chance, to do something...
Rational has nothing to do with it.

The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by agu on Jun 28, 2016 15:19:14 GMT 1, 99 Acre wood (Part 2)
Piglet: I am worried. The people in the other woods keep voting for hard right fascists.
Poo: Itโs all right, we just wring our hands and tell them it's naughty.. they will go away.
Piglet: Really, I mean, there seem to be more of them every year.
Poo: Yes, but we are right they are wrong. They will see the error of their ways.
Piglet: Maybe the people are upset about something. Should we try to find out?
Poo: No, they are just racists. They are lucky we let ignorant people into the woods. They should be happy with their lot. They are just too stupid to understand.
Piglet: What about the woods with no honey. Are they stupid too?
Poo: Yes: Very stupid. But thatโs ok. We will club together and give them a bit of ours. Just enough to stay alive, then we can make them do what we want.
Piglet: Are there any other woods running out of honey?
Poo? Yes but they are so big, they need more honey than we have.
Piglet? Oh who decides who get what honey?
Poo: (sighs)....Thatโs not for you to worry about
Piglet: Iโm feeling uneasy about this
Poo: FUCK OFF, FUCK OFF, GET OUT YOU RACIST FUCK.

The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by agu on Jun 26, 2016 15:57:04 GMT 1, I don't think UK will Brexit. I think Juncker will be sacked or leave the EU in disgrace. Yeah, I think they will find some sort of middle ground. I think the UK will get a seat at the table, and be offered pretty much any opt out we want in exchange for not officially leaving We will get free trade, control of our own boarders and immigration rules, and no money put in or taken out of the EU budget. Having just woken from a nap, this sounds like a beautiful daydream. Perhaps I am still asleep.

The next US President? Clinton or Trump, by agu on Jun 25, 2016 18:18:31 GMT 1, Both of these candidates are flawed but unfortunately for the US it seems the choice is between these two. Wether successful business people like Trump are able to solve the issues affecting a large proportion of Americans is yet to be seen. From my limited knowledge there is an disillusioned underbelly of America that live in near poverty, when it promotes itself as the country of success. I am not a socialist by any means but if you do nothing to help these people you become part of the problem. I wish I was more knowledgeable of the issues that the majority of Americans find a concern. I just hope that a new breed of politicians come forward who care more for the people than they do for themselves, both here and around the world. Politics should not be a career, it should be about helping the people you live alongside of. We have the same problem here in the UK

The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by agu on Jun 25, 2016 16:16:47 GMT 1, Interesting to note that, there is very little attempt to understand WHY immigration is such an issue and has such traction. Here is my ยฃ0.02
If you have you have a roof over your head, food on the table and small improvements in living - it feels like the sun is shining on your face and you have HOPE. Armed with hope, your reaction to immigration is "Come in the water is warm", this was the basis of the American dream.
If you have had no pay rise since 2008, and the industry around you is declining, the contracts and jobs are zero hour sh*t and all the good jobs move to London. You want to know "where's my share?". and if the lady who serves you in the pub is from Lithuania? Well, you never wanted her late night, long hour, minimum wage job but she is the face of what has changed.
Meanwhile, you constantly see others making and taking millions. The response from the policymakers has been, "Trust capitalism - it will trickle down". It has not. The equity Gap has grown, the (rising) cost of a house is 10x the (stagnant) average family income and the NHS, educational and social services are NHS are on their knees. So where is the money going?
The truth is the rich do not share the wealth - they lock it up, off shore/tax free if possible, or worse use it to buy up scarce necessities - housing, and sell these back to the rest at inflated prices to sucking up what little sun they had in their lives with ridiculous rents. Is it any surprise people are pissed off?
financial squeeze and increasing in-equity + poor policy = dissatisfaction + Politicians not prepared to take the blame and irresponsible jingoistic press = anti immigration sentiment
You can fix any part of the equation, it is just immigration is not the cause.

Stik โข Hip Poster โข Japan Big Issue, by agu on Jun 16, 2016 10:49:55 GMT 1, I haven't used my laptop for the forum I months, don't have a tablet, always check on my phablet. Thought there would be more mobile users.. ... there are thousands of us ... don't worry ... It would be an interesting anomaly if mobile access was not a) a significant share and b) the main source of growth
Getting back to the thread, Looking of an indication of value I trawled jcookgurl's activity but failed to find the price discussions referred to. How are the giclees valued vs the screen prints?
Based in London but could probably pick up from San Fran in not LA

Share the STIK love!, by agu on Jun 10, 2016 10:29:20 GMT 1, Wow. Suddenly the Share the STIK Love has turned into "flame STIK Lovers".
We all have or want to have large art collections of work we love. Many of us enjoying sharing our art with others for many reasons - the joy of sharing with like minded people, the prospect of a share back and of course status - I freely admit to getting more than a tingle of "look at my good taste, aren't I cool" when people come into my house and comment.
None of us got into art so we could be judged. Given we are all tasteful smart and lucky enough to have discovered the joy of art, perhaps if something is not to your liking on this thread you might want to treat it the same way you do with art that is not to your taste - Quietly move to the next piece.
just sayin...

Should all Migrants be treated Equally?, by agu on Jun 5, 2016 21:35:34 GMT 1, Not sure I understand the original question. In the UK? When you say migrant, do you mean refugees, asylum seekers or economic migrants? If you mean economic migrants, there are already visa agreements in place for people outside of the EU. You make a good point. As have many people on this thread (nods to Ploppi re: sale of arms). The subject and the reasons for migration are complex. Can UK do more YES. HOW many and WHO gets more complex? There is no simple answer. .
I am pro economic migration. You are more like to work for a migrant han have your job taken. I am certainly pro refugee and asylum seekers, we have a moral responsibility to help these people. We should encourage select the economic migrants to help build the economy, and open our boards and hearts for those that need our support. I am "luke warm" about accepting anyone just because they are a member of a trading club, in a complex world blanket rule of "anyone in unlimited amounts from within a line" does not work.... which I understand to be the point of Mr Silks rather interesting question.

" If you want to be left on this island with governments that have no consideration for our well-being then that's up to you. I do not trust those that desire absolute power, because that is what they want - power with no obstructions.โ
Really good point that I had not heard before.
I have to say the quality of debate on this forum beats the press by a country mile... Or an Eu kilometre.

The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by agu on May 29, 2016 8:15:25 GMT 1, Jean-Claude Juncker: โDeserters not welcomed backโ
Really. REALLY! It is this kind of rhetoric that makes me want to say, 'f@%k you'.
Rant over.. I agree with coach, on the job scenario. We have zero manufacturing base and would need to rebuild whole tranches of the economy, it will not be pain free. More or less painful than staying? Who knows.

The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by agu on May 28, 2016 13:48:37 GMT 1, Started as in "inner" now in the fence.
The main reasons for "in" seems to be 1)protecting the financial services industry and 2)keep house prices high. Inequality of income and high house prices are a failure of our society, so why fight to keep them ?
I am happy to take the hit on my house value if it means my kids, and others will one day be able to buy their own. Anyway more kids with homes = more walls that need art so my collection will more than cover any loss I make on home ...surely?
