Banksy's ex-Gallerist talks about their breakup..., by hlarmy on Oct 13, 2010 11:02:25 GMT 1, I'm not sure I agree with whether this is true; I would argue that at the start of an artist's career it is best to go solo in order to keep prices down and build a collector base / demand. However if an artist wants to progress he / she needs mainstream representation - it's a respect thing! Yeah, maybe, but is that really so important in a scene like this I dunno
Well I actually think it's very important Silky, especially in a scene like this - there are too many artists who introduce themselves on here, get a couple of sales and sign up to a small gallery, often an online gallery, who in my opinion does very little for them apart from doubling their prices and charging their 50%, effectively killing any momentum they initially build in the first place.
Often the gallery doesn't even have a space to exhibit the work so they just do an online release every few months. If an artist is going to sign up to a gallery that takes their 50%, I would personally want to know what I'm getting in return. I've seen this happen quite a lot over the past few years, and unsurprisingly many of them do not exist any more and the artists they signed up are now struggling having had some strong initial interest in their work.
On the other side of the coin, although I haven't had anything thing to do with Lazarides apart from a few purchases, I do have quite a bit of respect for what he does and what he can offer any new artists that join him. Only this year has he has some very successful shows in Rathbone Street, not to mention the hugely successful shows in LA and now Hell's Half Acre. That adds value to the artist, increases exposure and helps to build his / her career. Too many galleries lack the drive, ambition, contacts, marketing skills etc etc to add any value and those are the ones to stay clear of; if you can't sign up to a gallery who has any of these, then as you say it's best to go it alone and hope that one day one of them does come knocking...
Rant over

Banksy's ex-Gallerist talks about their breakup..., by hlarmy on Oct 13, 2010 10:19:27 GMT 1, I think many of the bigger named Artists have moved away from solid connections with galleries, coz they know with the use of the internet they can promote and sell their own work. The Artists are in a much stronger position now than they were years ago I think

Banksy's ex-Gallerist talks about their breakup..., by hlarmy on Oct 13, 2010 10:12:11 GMT 1, Maybe an Artist should expect to agree to a lesser or greater than 50% cut of the profits depending on the profile of the Gallery? just like any other trade / business there are better Galleries than others esp. when you factor in the cost publicity machine/ advertising and exposure etc. rather than just having a picture of the Artworks on their websites and waiting for an enquiry from a prospective punter. Just saying.
Very true Wiz; if the artist is a pretty much unknown and is then given the opportunity to work with a gallery like Lazarides, it may well be in his long term interest to accept less than 50%. Having said that, if this is the case, the artist's work is likely to be quite low in value and less than 50% would not give much to the artist at all, although I guess it could be argued that it would be worth taking a short term hit in long run. Just saying

Banksy's ex-Gallerist talks about their breakup..., by hlarmy on Oct 13, 2010 9:30:09 GMT 1, All I am saying is if you have ever bought ANYTHING from him you can bet on the simple fact, he made double what the artist made from the sale. Sorry to inform you but it is a fact, know several people who have done business with Steve and.................wait for it...Suprise same story time and time again the man is simply the biggest snake in the business. Fancy partys and big name clients don't mean squadt, he is what he is.
I find it hard to believe that Laz takes 66% and the artist 33% of any sale. Isn't the norm around 50:50?

You're always welcome around here for a cup of tea by the way, as long as you bring that nice canvas you have as a token of your appreciation - you know, the one you've just had re-framed

Nice surprise! Hope the edition will sell, good price! any chance "Parallel", "you're reading far too much in this" or "son of Fall" wil make it to a print? Those are my absolute favourites..
Agreed Jopkop, that Son of Fall painting is a bit special...

Banksy โข Monkey Parliament Poster, by hlarmy on Oct 12, 2010 12:45:16 GMT 1, More than 100 were sold; I've been made aware of at least 30 or so in the past few weeks - the problem is that no-one wants to sell or part with it just yet.
If anyone does want to part with it, I've got a few pieces that I would swap for it that are quite tasty

(VIDEO) BANKSY TEST PRINTS DESTROYED, by hlarmy on Oct 12, 2010 1:32:09 GMT 1, The voice that's asking what the original sketch is of, is the same voice of banksy that's masked in exit through the gift shop. Very recognisable.
It certainly sounds familiar... good spot. Loving the 'Robin' slip up as well

It's not definite but I'm happy to pass them on ...

JBOY ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Art For Sale, by hlarmy on Oct 11, 2010 20:05:22 GMT 1, It's just how things are panning out hlarmy. Soon there will be no need for physical shops or galleries due to the advent of mobile media you can now be a consumer not just at home but on the move. Online is about to change as we all know it...
I tend to agree in many respects, but am not sure this can work with art, unless the future is stencil art where there's no depth. It's easy to buy this type of art from a JPEG, but other (and many) forms of art need to be seen in person to be appreciated...

JBOY ๐ฌ๐ง Print Release โข Art For Sale, by hlarmy on Oct 11, 2010 19:58:30 GMT 1, It will not be long before you see totally online art exhibitions with people talking and commenting with video chat instead of being at the venue. The Internet is a blank canvas and this is how things will be done down the line.
I, for one, hope that never happens. That sounds like a pretty shit world to me!!!

Adam Neate "The Flock Series" Show, Elms Lesters, by hlarmy on Oct 11, 2010 19:56:41 GMT 1, look forward to pics if you can.
... and so it begins - a week of trying to avoid seeing these pictures so the surprise isn't ruined. I'm expecting to see 5 sculptures by Adam going by the sneak preview on the E.L's website. Either way, I've yet to be disappointed in what he's produced so looking forward it, surprise or no surprise!!

Banksy Wanted up to ยฃ5k Please., by hlarmy on Oct 11, 2010 19:53:20 GMT 1, Is everyone convinced then that with Banksy the only way is up? I used to think that but the art world is a fickle place. I suppose too much money is invested in him now to go down too much. To make true money though you need to buy at the bottom. That boat has long sailed with Banksy.
1st point = pointless question (no offense ) as everyone has different views
2nd point = I'm not convinced that it won't go down because people have invested in it; I may be wrong but Banksy's longevity is only pretty much guaranteed when the big boys wade in, which is unlikely to happen
3rd point = there's huge scope for price increases in Banksy's if he's accepted by the 'establishment' and is collected by those with the big money
4th point = I may be wrong in everything I've just said

Banksy Wanted up to ยฃ5k Please., by hlarmy on Oct 11, 2010 18:47:07 GMT 1, My suggestion is don't invest in art. It is a terrible investment. Even worse if you are talking about prints and such rather than "fine art". LOL I've not bought a sinlge print that's worth less than I paid for it, most are worth 3/4 times their initial price. (and only one of those prints is a Banksy, the rest aren't such bankable names.)
I think you're probably in a very small minority there; I've done quite well out of art I have bought, some luck and some good judgement, but have still bought plenty that has decreased in value.
Do you offer an advisory service?
EDIT: I almost think this deserves it's own thread as it's something that's worth discussing.

Banksy โข Monkey Parliament Poster, by hlarmy on Oct 11, 2010 12:59:25 GMT 1, I've been looking for over a month and can safely say that there are very few around that are in good condition.
I was watching that auction this weekend, and it shot up from 6 quid to over 100 quid in a couple of hours; not sure whether it was legit but I've now given up hope of finding one close to cost...
