Faile Flag • Star Spangled Shadows Print, by daveart on Oct 23, 2009 0:29:57 GMT 1, Took me a while to let the image rattle around in my brain. After some comparisons to jasper johns i have to point out another flag from the pop era and had to find an image of it. The Faile flag strikes a modern and as others have noted american indian interpretation of the flag. Take a look at this lichtenstein from the Forms in Space series.
Same number of red stripes. faile flag has a bit more angel. overall though.. enough of a comparison to warrant a look.
www.coskunfineart.com/details.asp?workID=329
the lichtenstein version will probably set you bak $60K US. so i'll stick wiith the faile verson for now.

Faile Flag • Star Spangled Shadows Print, by daveart on Oct 22, 2009 20:14:05 GMT 1, just have to throw it out... Anyone willing to assign any political or social message to the Faile flag? a few mentions of J Johns flags reminded me Johns also did the green flag for the Vietnam protests. Is Star Spangled 'shadows' with a messed up field of red and white more than just an image - or is there a meaning here?

Faile Flag • Star Spangled Shadows Print, by daveart on Oct 22, 2009 17:25:27 GMT 1, Grabbed the Faile print - close enough dimensions to Banksy Have a nice day so i think it could match up the frame widths and stack them vertically on the wall.
the brits have plenty of union jack / queen / UK images about.. us flag isnt the best image but its a faile at less than $400 ! nothing to complain about there.

Banksy Donuts Print, by daveart on Jul 29, 2009 15:34:16 GMT 1, Has anyone started the speculation as to where the relative value of this print will fall in relation to the other Banksy prints. I wouldnt rate it as one of his best - maybe same value as where Trolleys or S&S ar? bigger runs .. but better images IMO .. thoughts?

Swine Flu - Should we be worried?, by daveart on Apr 27, 2009 21:29:28 GMT 1, As much as i can be a cynic towards the media ... On this topic i believe a healthy amount of caution up front is needed. A quick read regarding the last time the flu got the best of humans should be enough to let us know it can and probably will happen again. bird flu had many things that ended up working in the humans favor and prevented a full on problem. it doesnt sound like this current strain has those barriers working in our favor.
Lets hope this continues to be a matter we can joke about in the future. as soon as someone on the forum knows a friend or family member impacted ... the jokes will probably not look quite as funny. as soon as the first country closes its borders.. world trade will impact us all..

Basquiat anyone?, by daveart on Apr 23, 2009 14:06:36 GMT 1, (i had posted some of this before) After Basquiat's death his estate - controlled by his father - issued two sets of prints based on paintings Basquiat had held in his personal collection. so these are signed by his father as representative of the Basquiat estate.
The first edition was of four prints and the second edition a few years later was also comprised of four prints.
here is a link to see all eight. not recommending this source for purchase.. they just have a nice page that shows all eight in one spot.
www.hamiltonselway.com/basquiat/
These were available for around $10,000 a few years back and into the $30,000 range during the big run up of the last few years. I have seen them now and again lately in the below $15,000.
There is currently a set of four for sale on ebay.

Banksy's on eBay • Real or Fake?, by daveart on Apr 6, 2009 13:57:10 GMT 1, from above -anewspace- I hope you dont mind the quote "If it is fake unless you've paid by paypal its impossible to get a refund."
From my own painful experience - i can assure all of you.. paypal will not refund your money based on something being misrepresented. they will simply label it a buyer/seller dispute and back away. The only way paypal will step in is in the event your account was compromised. ie. someone used your account to buy something. Do not rely on paypal (remember that paypal is essentially ebay) to mediate or provide assistance to you if you buy something that is misrepresented. My eperience had a somewhat happy ending in that the credit card i used to pay the papal balance did have a fraud protection clause. i encourage all of you buying through ebay to check your credit card fraud protection verbiage. i was successfully able to argue fraud with the credit card company and received money back on the value of the piece but not the shipping or incidentals. i hope this all saves someone pain in the future. bottom line .. unless you directly get information from paypal saying their rules have changed... they do not provide fraud protection between seller and buyer.

Jean-Michel Basquiat 🇺🇸 Brooklyn, New York • Graffiti Art , by daveart on Mar 24, 2009 16:40:46 GMT 1, I am going to take this in a different direction. talent and such aside. can an anonymous person ever reach lasting international fame? You can see vidoeos of the other modern artists creating, representing, explaining, etc their work. sure part of Banksy's fame came from the mystery but at some point that has to turn against him. i am personally amazed people will spend such vast sums of money on banksy's work when you really have no idea about the creator. i love banksy's work .. dont get me wrong but i dont know if it has the lasting power and value of other artists that have organized their work differently.
going to fly way out on a limb with this one.. but not sure how many milli vanilli fans there were at one point.. i know there were a LOT fewer when the truth came out. what if half of these banksy's were created by different people? what if there isnt an individual 'banksy' pumping out ideas but there are many collaborators. it doesnt mean the work isnt really cool.. but certainly impacts the lasting power and value in my mind. i would sure want to know those answers before dropping 50k on an original banksy. in other words - people on here want air tight provenance from the printer.. but you dont have the slightest clue of the provenance of the creator. This has to impact things over time.

The Universe of Keith Haring, by daveart on Mar 3, 2009 15:37:27 GMT 1, The Universe of Keith Haring I purchased a copy of this film recently and had opportunity to watch it. simply amazing. I recommend this film on so many levels. you must watch this film. period.
currently you can purchase from : www.arthousefilmsonline.com
They have a few showing dates & locations listed at: www.haring.com/universe_of_haring/
Cost delivered in the US was $35 - you have to email them to purchase and they send you a paypal link. a bit cumbersome but they were very prompt in replying.
i have read a few books about Haring so i am not sure this film uncovers any completely new ground. but watching it.. hearing it.. seeing it.. is so much more powerful than reading it. seeing video of him filling a whole wall with not so much as a reference picture or a guideline.. it is simply amazing.
unfortunately.. this movie has a sad ending.. such a loss. i may have to save up for another haring piece now.

Grafter Splash - New Triptych available tomorrow, by daveart on Feb 12, 2009 23:14:39 GMT 1, i have grafter splash white on canvas and an eskimo child on canvas. couldnt be happier.. also have no worry that this degrades what i have. if anything it puts grafter in front of more people. gives him exposure and resources to do more work.
people did the same discussion when Nick Walker released new color/design variations on born 2 bomb as i recall. Murakami - regarded by some as a leading artist and savvy business man - releases color variations in the dozens of essentially the same DOB image - his call. he is the artist. i have four color variations of the DOB image and enjoy them all regardless of what he puts out tomorrow. Anyway, i ramble.. grafter is not the first or the last to build on a good image. good for him .. and lets hope for more stunning work in the future.

Shepard Fairey - vs Associated Press, by daveart on Feb 5, 2009 2:29:16 GMT 1, i guess copying is flattery only if you dont make a ton of money with it and become more famous than ever intended...
***
NEW YORK – On buttons, posters and Web sites, the image was everywhere during last year's presidential campaign: A pensive Barack Obama looking upward, as if to the future, splashed in a Warholesque red, white and blue and underlined with the caption HOPE.
Designed by Shepard Fairey, a Los-Angeles based street artist, the image has led to sales of hundreds of thousands of posters and stickers, has become so much in demand that copies signed by Fairey have been purchased for thousands of dollars on eBay.
The image, Fairey has acknowledged, is based on an Associated Press photograph, taken in April 2006 by Manny Garcia on assignment for the AP at the National Press Club in Washington.
The AP says it owns the copyright, and wants credit and compensation. Fairey disagrees.
"The Associated Press has determined that the photograph used in the poster is an AP photo and that its use required permission," the AP's director of media relations, Paul Colford, said in a statement.
"AP safeguards its assets and looks at these events on a case-by-case basis. We have reached out to Mr. Fairey's attorney and are in discussions. We hope for an amicable solution."
"We believe fair use protects Shepard's right to do what he did here," says Fairey's attorney, Anthony Falzone, executive director of the Fair Use Project at Stanford University and a lecturer at the Stanford Law School. "It wouldn't be appropriate to comment beyond that at this time because we are in discussions about this with the AP."
Fair use is a legal concept that allows exceptions to copyright law, based on, among other factors, how much of the original is used, what the new work is used for and how the original is affected by the new work.
A longtime rebel with a history of breaking rules, Fairey has said he found the photograph using Google Images. He released the image on his Web site shortly after he created it, in early 2008, and made thousands of posters for the street.
As it caught on, supporters began downloading the image and distributing it at campaign events, while blogs and other Internet sites picked it up. Fairey has said that he did not receive any of the money raised.
A former Obama campaign official said they were well aware of the image based on the picture taken by Garcia, a temporary hire no longer with the AP, but never licensed it or used it officially. The Obama official asked not to be identified because no one was authorized anymore to speak on behalf of the campaign.

Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by daveart on Jan 31, 2009 18:40:42 GMT 1, lee - would love to see a copy of that catalog if it can be scanned..
one nagging problem i have with some of the art followed closely on this forum is how well it will age and its overall .. hmm.. ability to be hung in most settings. pick most of the pop artists and you can hang it almost anywhere. but read the number of threads on here where people say 'my wife wouldnt let me hang that in the house' and i wonder .. how well that art will age.
lee .. maybe you have an opinion as someone knowledgeable about both scenes.. whether people liked the art or not .. do you think the pop art from that catalog has aged better than some of the street / urban art will ? no right or wrong answer here .. just curious for your opinion.

[OT]Israeli violence against its own left, by daveart on Jan 14, 2009 16:40:32 GMT 1, Democracies - to the extent they truly exist - thrive on speaking and hearing both sides of a debate. Just as in America there are plenty of anti war demonstrations, publications, web sites, etc .. should not we almost expect or demand as much to hear from both sides of the argument from the Israelis? so this is good to see. it is healthy. Would it not also then be a travesty to assume all Palestinians believe the actions of Hamas over the years are all correct and just? sadly i do not believe they would feel safe speaking out or demonstrating openly against Hamas.
I have on various threads tried to distinguish between civilians and government leaders on both sides. obviously no one wins when civilians die. its terribly sad. This is beyond debate.
I am going to agree with timba on this one point though. post after post discusses Israel's transgressions. This is fine. On many points i agree. However, i have not seen on this forum discussion of the actions of Hamas. note.. not Palestinian civilians. Hamas. To not discuss Hamas - their role, their goals, their beliefs for the region, their goals for how they want the region to work long term, their missiles, their alleged interractions with iran and others, their dismissal of egypts help and recommendations, the expiration of the cease fire, the abuses towards their own civilians, etc would be to do great injustice to the conversation.
please - these are simply comments- i am not an expert - i am willing to read and listen to those of you that want to express your opinions. but if you start posts with name calling and insensitivity.. you lose the ability to educate and carry on the conversation. and that in its self is a huge loss. Mike Marcos - you bring a good thread to the forum .. but then fall towards ' not respecting'.. respect. always. discuss. debate and educate. you have their attention.. now go in for the logical kill. they may never agree.. but that doesn't need to lead to a lack of respect.
I hope none of you suffer personal loss from this conflict or any conflict and pray for peace world wide.
Regards.
Democracies - to the extent they truly exist - thrive on speaking and hearing both sides of a debate.

I WILL DO SOMETHING TO STOP THE SLAUGHTER IN GAZA!, by daveart on Jan 11, 2009 22:45:01 GMT 1, hi la nothing my post said Israel was without fault. i would have posted a similar response to anyone claiming Israel was without fault in this matter.
one thing on these threads is people are using 'palestinians' and 'hamas' interchangeably.. and maybe they should not be.
i absolutely support the safety and protection of palestinians as i would support any innocent civilian group. i admit i struggle with the decisions of hamas .. as i struggle with the hard line israelis .. or war hawks in the US, russia, africa or anywhere else where the few make bad decisions that impact the many. and the few hide and the many pay the price..

I WILL DO SOMETHING TO STOP THE SLAUGHTER IN GAZA!, by daveart on Jan 11, 2009 20:14:18 GMT 1, 'the world' however you want to define that created the state of isreal after ..take a deep breath.. and let this sink in....
seventy two million people perished world wide during wwii. (cited from wikipedia). roll that unprecedented number around for a while. 72,000,000. - 47,000,000 of these estimated to be civilians.
the carving up and assigning of the land its an unhappy result of an unhappy period of time. the same carving up of land played out other places in the mid east, africa, russia , east west germany..etc etc.. with unfortunately the same types of ongoing struggles.
its all very complex .. rooted in difficult historical drama. discuss it as calmly as possible is my best thought on this post :-)

Basquiat Editions, by daveart on Jan 11, 2009 19:52:11 GMT 1, Snausages is correct on the initial prices.. i really did not follow these until after they had already hit over 10k and thats about what i have in it .. then watched them spiral up and up and now coming back down.. the street scene has flippers. the established art market has galleries to create the illusion they need. one thing about these is as long as the established galleries support basquiats work i believe these will be relevant in some way to the overall body of basquiats paintings.
haring has a number of prints published posthumously. of which i own a few.. and also some signed by Haring. they all hang the same. i believe warhol also has some posthumously published editions. for better or worse.. prints are big posters.. people assign the value they want.
one thing about these basquiat prints. the study and appreciateion of basquiats body of work has held and maybe even increased over 30 + years since he started painting and 20 years since his death. i hope this means this print will be identifiable and interesting well into the future.
not to speak for him or steal his ideas but Lee has mentioned many times on this forum .. very very few of the artists from the 80's are still talked about .. and this will certainly apply to today's artists in 20 years.

Basquiat Editions, by daveart on Jan 11, 2009 17:12:09 GMT 1, unfortunately those are the prices for each piece. there are a few knocking about on ebay right now ranging from 13k to 30K. in my opinion 30k prices are the gallery prices that have not adjusted to the current market. best of luck to you.

Signed Vs Unsigned, by daveart on Jan 11, 2009 15:47:38 GMT 1, i am not a printing expert - however, one thing for consideration is that the concept of prints in general is really a modern thing. printing presses, archival paper, etc are somewhat new historically. so prior to these modern things art was lovingly created by the artist. the fact that something is signed brings the artist back to the print for authentification, approval, etc . makes it more personal, harder to fake, and hopefully more interesting to everyone. the next step better of course would be paint on canvas or other product where the artist actually created the work without a printing process involved at all.

Basquiat Editions, by daveart on Jan 11, 2009 15:38:55 GMT 1, Basquiat is the most powerful artists I have spent time learning about. For most of us thought the concept of owning a Basquiat is in the same league as owning a private jet..
After Basquiat's death his estate - controlled by his father - issued two sets of prints based on paintings Basquiat had held in his personal collection.
The first edition was of four prints and the second edition a few years later was also comprised of four prints.
here is a link to see all eight. not recommending this source for purchase.. they just have a nice page that shows all eight in one spot.
www.hamiltonselway.com/basquiat/
These were available for around $10,000 a few years back and the soared into the $30,000 range during the big run up of the last few years. I have seen them now and again lately in the below $15,000. not a bargain .. but considering the original would be in the $2,000,000 range if you could even find it .. maybe its an ok deal.
note that the value of these will always be held back by the fact Basquiat himself did not authorize or sign these. one gallery owner i spoke with believes Basquiat had approved the first set of four prints but did not live to see the project through to completion. so possibly the first set is more authentic to what the artist wanted.
I own Cabeza. which is from the second set
The original was painted on a blanket stretched between wood planks. the print captures the texturing of the blanket but you lose the three dimensions of course.
This is a massive print and is powerful enough to stop people in their tracks. of all the art i have ever purchased .. this piece holds attention the longest.
There are a number of good Books about Basquiat if you google around.. as well as a decent movie .. which i recommend.
The pop art movement lost Warhol, Basquiat, and keith haring in about a three year stretch. imagine in 2012 if banksy, faile, dface (sorry .. had to pick top three in my opinion - feel free to pick your own three) all died.
warhold - complications post surgery basquiat - drug overdose haring - aids
tragic losses all.
anyway for those of you who are interested in basquiat i thought i would bring up the editions and see if anyone else had them or were interested in them.
regards.
