Wow buyers premium + vat is added to hammer price Wow indeed. I was looking for a breakdown of the mark up, compared to a live auction. If I'd wanted to be condescended to by a smartypants, then I'd have DM'd lv90210

RAE BK - FAKE NEWS: "The Troll Factory Project", by toshspice on Jan 15, 2020 13:57:42 GMT 1,
I love Rae BK. One of the overlooked heroes of the NY scene. Put in a lot of work, for other people too, with his gallery back in the day.
Still creating interesting art, this included.

Pest Control COA โข Banksy Print Authentication, by toshspice on Oct 18, 2019 21:04:34 GMT 1, Has anyone heard from them at all? This is why I asked - They seem to have gone cold turkey of late. They had a period where they seemed to be 'on the ball' and rattling through them but that's dropped off. IMO they are providing a service which ultimately benefits them, so comms of some sort would be nice. You might want to respond to your own PMs before you dump on those higher up the food chain for lack of comms.

BANKSY Gross Domestic Productโข, by toshspice on Oct 3, 2019 20:50:28 GMT 1, That seems really low in comparison to Koons and kaws... I would consider this a masterpiece for Banksy and probably his most sought after work so far... I was actually thinking it would hammer anywhere from 25 to 50 Koons and Kaws markets are propped up by the super collectors. (Kaws by the Murakami connection and Koons via the support of people like the Mugrabes.) After the collapse of the grafitti art market in the 80s there's remains a mistrust of street art amongst the super collectors though that may now be about to change. Banksy has carved his own path so while it may take a little while longer to hit the nosebleed results, his long-term market will be far stronger for it.

Banksy's Devolved Parliament Sotheby's auction October 3rd, by toshspice on Sept 17, 2019 20:10:19 GMT 1, The NYT article in full:
By Scott Reyburn Published Sept. 16, 2019 Updated Sept. 17, 2019, 12:36 a.m. ET
LONDON โ Banksy, the worldโs favorite artist-provocateur, is set to enjoy another moment of auction activism.
The Bristol-born street artist created a global media sensation last October when one of his iconic โGirl With Balloonโ paintings shredded itself moments after selling for one million pounds, or about $1.4 million, at Sothebyโs.
Almost exactly a year later, on Oct. 3, another notable Banksy painting will be offered in the same London salesroom. With a valuation of ยฃ1.5 million to ยฃ2 million, it is expected to reach a new auction high for the elusive, anonymous artist.
The painting, โDevolved Parliament,โ dating from 2009, is a timely satire on Britainโs political establishment, showing an animated debate in the House of Commons, the lower house of Parliament, conducted entirely by chimpanzees.
Wittily painted with the dreary realism of the paintings that hang in Britainโs Houses of Parliament and measuring more than 14 feet wide, the painting was shown at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery in the artistโs hometown to coincide with Britainโs scheduled departure from the European Union on March 29 this year, a date that was postponed until Oct. 31. โDevolved Parliamentโ will now be displayed in London just four weeks before the revised Brexit deadline.
Demand for Banksyโs paintings and prints has surged since last October when Alex Branczik, Sothebyโs head of contemporary art in Europe, announced โWeโve been Banksy-edโ at a post-sale news conference. The remote-controlled shredding mechanism jammed halfway down the canvas, leaving it dangling beneath its elaborate gold frame: Banksy aficionados quickly claimed this โGirl With Balloonโ had added value as a unique piece of performance art. Soon after, Sothebyโs announced that the buyer, described as a โfemale European collector,โ was happy to keep her booby-trapped purchase.
The painting, now retitled โLove Is in the Bin,โ has since March been hanging on long-term loan at the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart, Germany. โPresented in the museum context, it has to stand up to key works from the history of art โ from Rembrandt to Duchamp and from Holbein to Picasso,โ says the Staatsgalerieโs website.
The artistic prank of the century, designed to satirize the excesses of the auction world, has now become a highly valued museum piece.
This time around, it seems that Banksy himself is not behind the sale. Sothebyโs catalog entry for โDevolved Parliamentโ says the work was โacquired from the artist by the present owner in 2011.โ Banksyโs publicist, Joanna Brooks, said in an email, โThe painting in question is being sold by the owner who is in no way associated with the artist Banksy.โ
Regardless of who owns โDevolved Parliament,โ the artistโs view that Britain is ruled by political primates will be spread far and wide by the publicity surrounding the sale and the likely social media reaction. And there could also be quite a lot of money to be made. The market for Banksyโs art is still on a high after that 2018 shredding incident.
โIt had a massive effect,โ said Ben Cotton, founder of the Hang-Up Gallery in London. โThere was so much press coverage. Our phones went crazy,โ said Mr. Cotton, who has been dealing in Banksyโs works since 2007.
Mr. Cotton said that since last October he had sold about 10 of Banksyโs โGirl With Balloonโ screen prints at prices ranging from ยฃ50,000 to more than ยฃ100,000. โItโs the most coveted print, the most iconic. Itโs what everyone wants,โ he added.
This surge in interest has encouraged top-end auction houses to cash in on Banksy. Christieโs and Sothebyโs are both holding their first dedicated online sales of the artistโs prints. Estimates range from ยฃ5,000 for lesser unsigned images from large editions up to ยฃ250,000 for signed rarities.
โEvery time thereโs a stunt in the media it peaks the prices. Thereโs been quite a steady rise over the last two years,โ said James Baskerville, the head of Christieโs 30-lot Banksy sale, which includes a rare 2004 โGirl With Balloonโ screen print with the heart-shaped balloon in gold. By 8 a.m. in London on Monday, online bidding for the print had reached ยฃ150,000.
According to data from the French database Artprice, worldwide auction sales of Banksy increased from $6.7 million in 2017 to $13.7 million in 2018. Mr. Baskerville added that last yearโs shredding incident had โreally revived and refreshed the market. It has encouraged people to sell.โ
But rising prices can encourage unrealistic expectations. This appeared to be the case on Saturday when Bonhams auction house offered a Volvo truck that had been spray-painted by Banksy in 1999 as the backdrop for a New Yearโs warehouse party in Spain.
Incongruously included among the Jaguar E-Types and Bentley Continentals of Bonhamsโs annual Goodwood Revival classic car sale, the truck had been commissioned by Mojo Fellner, a co-founder of the pyrotechnic performance troupe Turbozone International Circus. The free-painted decoration included flying chimpanzees that a decade later would land on the leather benches of โDevolved Parliament,โ as well as the trademark motto โLaugh now but one day weโll be in charge.โ
But a low estimate of ยฃ1 million proved too ambitious, and the truck was left unsold at ยฃ920,000.
โEveryoneโs asking high prices because of the leverage of the shredding. But the asking price and the closing price can be very different,โ said Acoris Andipa, a London gallerist who specializes in Banksy paintings and prints.
Mr. Andipa and others said that higher prices tended to be paid for Banksyโs works through discreet private sales, rather than at public auctions. The current salesroom high for the artist is still the $1.9 million paid back in 2008 at Sothebyโs for the 2007 painting โKeep It Spotless.โ
Mr. Andipa said he knew of Banksy paintings selling privately in excess of $5 million and that the artist was still painting and selling canvases to selected clients. โThere are ways and means of acquiring a Banksy from the primary market if you are prepared to abide by certain conditions. Youโve got to have a lot of money to be on the waiting list,โ Mr. Andipa added.
Ralph Taylor, the head of Bonhamsโs contemporary art department, who formerly worked for Banksyโs longtime dealer, Steve Lazarides, confirmed that the artist still sold new paintings directly to selected clients. โHe uses the money to support his other projects,โ he said.
Now that his much-reproduced โBrexit muralโ in Dover, England, showing a workman chipping off one of the stars from the European Unionโs flag, has been whitewashed, Banksyโs art will still get its message across as the deadline for Britainโs departure from the bloc looms. And at least โDevolved Parliamentโ doesnโt have to self-destruct.
Some might say British politics did that some time ago.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by toshspice on Oct 18, 2018 11:56:38 GMT 1, I'm not sure what the better artwork would be: If this was pulled off as advertised: - six years old - hidden shredder the whole time - no Sotheby's knowledge - etc etc OR Banksy getting people to believe the whole story as real.
You strike me as someone who will never be happy, whatever the reality. This works either way for me. Whether Banksy conspired with Sotheby's, or if he conned them, is irrelevant. The point is that it happened. Your continuing doubt just adds to the debate the stunt was intended to create.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by toshspice on Oct 9, 2018 13:59:12 GMT 1, If anyone is unfamiliar with Jonathan Jones, here is his piece on a 9/11 photograph. As always, it is thoughtful and considered. I love the way he includes W.H. Auden's poem. "About suffering they were never wrong, The old Masters: how well they understood Its human position: how it takes place While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along..."
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2011/sep/02/911-photo-thomas-hoepker-meaning
Yep poetry works - especially with the aid of Google search - when you're trying to make something uncomplicated seem more complex than it actually is. Ask any essay-writing student.
This is the most poignant line in that whole piece, mainly because of how far off the mark Jones is:
"Perhaps the real reason Hoepker sat on it at the time was because it would be egotistical to assert his own cunning as an artist in the midst of mass slaughter."
The answer is far more simple. Anyone who has seen the photo will know that.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by toshspice on Oct 9, 2018 12:22:34 GMT 1, An excellent article. Thanks for posting. Jonathan Jones is always worth reading. He is spot on when he criticises people who keep talking about how much the artwork is now worth. Art should be about the appreciation of the image, not about how much it is worth or how much it might be worth in the future. As Jones says, it's perhaps the best thing he has ever done. This would be my position as well. Jones is knowledgeable, intelligent and considered. Of equal importance is the fact he holds views I often disagree with or would strongly qualify. [Likewise with Robert Hughes and Brian Sewell when they were alive.]That is the kind of person I pay most careful attention to.
No disrespect to you Met, or any other fans out there, but I think Jonathan Jones is a cunt, pardon my French.
This is what he wrote a year ago about Girl With Balloon.
"Britainโs best-loved artwork is a Banksy. Thatโs proof of our stupidity
"This is what scares and depresses me about Banksy. The very lack of art in his art is what makes it popular. Real art is elusive, complex, ambiguous and often difficult. "
In other words if art were easy Jonathan Jones would be out of a job. Wouldn't that be great?

Damien Hirst H4 โข Veils, by toshspice on Aug 29, 2018 18:38:37 GMT 1, ...and just when you thought these guys didn't want to be bothered, they advertise prints that are sold out with an "Enquirer" button!?! It's really strange why they would do this. Maybe it's to make Hirst and their prints seem more "exclusive" by by being able to sobbingly say "Oh, they're all sold out" to anyone inquiring. They are just trawling for collectors to add to their client list base, the lifeblood of any art sales establishment. Estate agents do it all the time by advertising houses that sold months ago. You contact them, they offer to put you on their list should similar properties become available.

Obey Giant Film, by toshspice on Jan 3, 2018 10:50:54 GMT 1, Remember the incident when his wife said - with humor - that he is no longer hitting the wall, and he failed to pick the sarcasm and literally told her to shut up, that was nice Obey is clearly someone, I would love to see the movie too... This video just shows that the celeb-sucking arse-wits at TMZ have no idea about Shep, his history or why he'd choose to avoid answering questions that could incriminate himself in a crime however long ago it was. In LA graffiti perpetrators face a $50,000 fine and up to a year in jail. Do your research TMZ or shut the f**kup.
