flippers look away now., by dotdot on Nov 5, 2007 21:42:33 GMT 1, Given the recent news ok it's not news.
The market in Mics and Banksys has been flooded and there is a chance that those flippers even those on the forum may stand to lose out on the recent discovery made by pow / laz. (ah it's hard but tough effin shugar lumps pal)
If you release enough prints - not enough will sell on the bay - pushing pieces back down to where the flippers potentially can't make it actually work in an effective way. Don't get me wrong I could be wrong (hope not..) - the prices are descending quite a bit even since last friday.
POW coud hammer it in even more by just releasing the others in short succession - too many prints means too much competition - there's been enough here said - sayinh hold tight.
Laz releaesed 4 - Elms ahem 9.
I know mic is not banksy - but that alas is not my point.
There's a us print of trolley on now for 710 BIN unsold - i'd reckon on it going down to something like 400 ukp for the us prints.
As for the coloured trolley - and the white signed - what do people think will happen here ? 800 - 1200...

flippers look away now., by snakes on Nov 5, 2007 21:50:00 GMT 1, Fingers crossed dot dot.
Two u/s sold today for £540 & £565 at auction and they were UK based sellers. I imagine if it were a print based in the States or outside of the EU it would go for even less to UK buyers due to the attraction of import taxes.
What also is not helping the sellers of these prints is that their ebay accounts are relatively new, they have bugger all feedback and IMO should not be gone near, even with a 10' barge pole!
Bring on the price crash!!!

flippers look away now., by jboy on Nov 5, 2007 22:28:50 GMT 1, On the other hand snakes a certain mr D*'s work is going up in price. In the past day ive had people wanting to swap micallef print (good ones) and Beejoir shell print for a DSTQ or a hate. Have i done it? Hell have i, im not stupid!
Was offered an unsigned banksy trolley as well i was offered for my DSTQ. Again, that would be a very silly thing to do.
The proof is over on the DFACE forum buying and selling board. Its very real...
Sorry if this pisses a few people off. Im a massive fan of Banksy but POW and LAZ are forcing the prices down.

flippers look away now., by a4mnt on Nov 5, 2007 22:36:38 GMT 1, i think JBoy has a point. There is a lot less of his work available and clearly the galleries are shunning the secondary market in favour of making all the cash themselves - and that is exactly what any business would do.
Dface's work isn't being flooded at present, although I can see people are trying to tar it with the same brush in respect of offering low figures for his work, but any savvy seller will hold out and get a good price i think.

flippers look away now., by jboy on Nov 5, 2007 22:39:05 GMT 1, and the new ones are not going to be cheap according to mr face so i doubt many people will flip the next release. Maybe could be looking at double or three times what a normal print would cost.
I was offered a special fools gold (well several) a few months back by Beth and they were £1500 each.

What ever you do JBOY dont even consider swapping it for any of that SBFO stuff, as DFACE is in it for the long run where'as some of the others are just five minute wonders...

flippers look away now., by collector on Nov 6, 2007 1:06:20 GMT 1, It's not the flippers dictating prices, it's Laz hyping his artists out of all proportion so he can cream off as much money as possible. The fact that Laz sells a canvas for £5,000 one day then £35,000 the next clearly shows who's dictating the prices. Laz and POW want there artists to be big, VERY BIG, it's not about 'the street' or giving something back, they are businesses. Laz is as guilty as the average flipper, if Banksy gives him a canvas to sell, why sell it for £1,000 when you can sell it for £10,000. Exact same principle as a flipper. Some would argue that Laz puts something into the scene, but the input verus output is very distorted, he get's a lot more out of it than he put's in that's for sure. Most flippers are 'part of the scene' whether we like it or not, I think a lot of the Trollies prints are hitting eBay early as they have overspent on 'the scene' and need to pay their credit cards.
I have read many threads on this and I was determined not to get involved as it's soooooooooooooo boring, but let's not lose sight of the facts here. Elms have in the last few months also shown how they like to dictate the Neate prices, why blame the flippers for flogging a print with £500 profit when Elms have multiplied their prices by about 10 in a few months.
POW must be laughing all the way to the bank, instead of selling 650 prints (Grannies £175,000) they sell 1400 (Trolleys £518,750). How can they possible bitch about people selling prints for profit after the obscene profits they make!
IMO prices will continue to drop but will REALLY pick up again soon so if you were unlucky in not getting a print get one soon, OK you might have to give a flipper £250 extra but if you want the print for the long term you will be laughing (if you value the value of art that is). I don't really think Laz or POW could do anything to discourage people buying Banksy prints for profit so we all have to move on. Rant over, off to bed now!

How can they possible b**ch about people selling prints for profit after the obscene profits they make!
they did b**ch when they had skeaky bastards buying up two's and three's of certain prints then flogging them on ebay, these days they know editions will sell out instantly so have introduced measures to try to accomodate as many as possible, ie larger editions. this too makes life for said flippers harder so surely it's a win win situation?
all power to POW, the micallef release and now trolleys are perfect examples of how to keep as many serious fans/collectors happy as possible and to make the act of flipping a much less profitable one.
they could have raised prices, after all there is a few quid still to be squeezed out of all the trolley editions, especially the b/w signed, but at £432 for a signed banksy you cannot complain, regardless of how much they score out of it. nothing is perfect but in reality the actions of POW and their two most high profile artists should be applauded, they have tried to cater for the majority and in a way they originally set out to do - bring art to a lot of people at affordable prices. *relatively speaking*

flippers look away now., by pezlow on Nov 6, 2007 9:48:40 GMT 1, Totally agree rupert. POW should be applauded for their recent releases. After a pretty dodgy start to the year they have really got their act together. The GIWTBB and Trolleys releases were about as perfect a release as you can get.
There is still room for improvement on their shipping time and packaging but POW are getting many more things right than they are wrong.

Laz started out selling prints for 50 quid whilst working as a freelance photographer. No way could they have engineered or expected the scene to develop as it did. As for Elms, that's a love of art that drives that business, certainly not money, they've been promoting graf based art for more than a decade hardly any of which sold. All three of the businessess and galleries you mention are the UK's primary supporters, creators and developers of this scene...hundreds have benefitted from their work and initial risks. As for their stable of artists benefiting, well, that's their job. They manage their artists careers, and they have obviously done it very fucking well. Yes, they take a percentage.. but they also invest a lot of time and fionance in staging shows for us to enjoy. They enable people like Banksy and Micallef to produce some stupidly expensive pieces and shows. Taking LA don't come cheap. And even then, if you look at the annual salary or signing on fee of one half-witted footballer or one coked up city boy and you're probably looking at the salaries of the whole stable of artists that belong to both POW and LAZ... maybe direct some of your ire away from the scene and onto those more deserving.

flippers look away now., by pezlow on Nov 6, 2007 10:08:41 GMT 1, Re Elms all I can say is that whenever I have gone to that gallery I have come away feeling that paul and fiona love the art and love what they do. I really cannot accept that money is their motivating factor,
Of course they are running a business so they would be crazy not to charge market rates for their products but this doesn't mean they are in it for the money.

flippers look away now., by sham69 on Nov 6, 2007 10:12:30 GMT 1, Care to second guess what kind of margins these galleries are working on? It certainly isn't industry averages that's for sure. If 50% split was deemed standard, these boys are breaking the rules. I don't want to seem like I'm biting the hand that feeds but it's every man for themselves. There's no favours or gifts if you're a punter. Just who is their target market? Remember, when buying art it has to hurt. If it doesn't hurt it's no good.

flippers look away now., by Danger Mouse on Nov 6, 2007 10:25:23 GMT 1, Isn't this just a case of prices dipping due to the market being saturated with so many new prints in such large editions? Once the remaining 2 LA Banksy prints have been sold at POW and Christmas is out of the way then I would imagine the prints will start to increase in price again.
Also, what do people think to the future prices of the older Banksy and Micallef prints? Due to their age, classic image and lower edition runs I still think these will stand the test of time, remain in demand and so increase in price as people still want these for their collection. It is just that a lot of people have no money to buy them at the moment. In the spring next year maybe they will?

flippers look away now., by numusic on Nov 6, 2007 10:59:38 GMT 1, Re Elms all I can say is that whenever I have gone to that gallery I have come away feeling that paul and fiona love the art and love what they do. I really cannot accept that money is their motivating factor, Of course they are running a business so they would be crazy not to charge market rates for their products but this doesn't mean they are in it for the money.
Yeah, a lot people like to project their own personalities onto others. It's a lack of empathy, no ?, quite odd for someone collecting a type of art that requires it in bucketloads.

flippers look away now., by collector on Nov 6, 2007 11:21:45 GMT 1, Also, what do people think to the future prices of the older Banksy and Micallef prints? Due to their age, classic image and lower edition runs I still think these will stand the test of time, remain in demand and so increase in price as people still want these for their collection.
I think the lower edition numbers will always demand more money, regardless of age. But I think the image is very important too, Trolleys I think is a great image as is GIWTBB, they are big editions but are still very desirable and once the influx of prints have gone prices will creep up.
