Suck a duck! TWO YEARS!!!
You get less for mugging an oldie.
Nice clear message. Don't mess around with expensive artwork.

But what damage did that cause? I understand that the damage to the Rothko is much worse than at first thought. The inks have sunk into the paint, which will have to be removed. The restorers then have the difficulty that Rothko mixed his own paints with unorthodox materials, that they will have to try to replicate. I hear that the restoration will take a very long time, and be very costly. It also concerns me that with stunts like this, galleries may be tempted to hide masterworks behind glass (eg the mona Lisa) which would be a great shame.

Well said.
This deluded clown will be out in a year tops though.
Self obsessed selfish acts like this have the potential to destroy the experience of galleries for all.
Would love to be a fly on the wall when he is explaining Yellowism to his cellmate.

Tony Shafrazi built an art empire after vandalizing Guernica so this could well be the guy to speak with if one is an aspiring artist. I believe these acts will remain rare and would be surprised to see many museums salute the plexiglass defense.

Mark Rothko ๐ฑ๐ป Abstract Painting โข Art For Sale, by Coach on May 6, 2013 22:26:06 GMT 1, I found out about the Rothko Chapel today - I was previously unaware of it's existence, and so thought I would share. I rather like the fact that it is for anyone, no matter what faith.
From the website:
"The Rothko Chapel, founded by Houston philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil, was dedicated in 1971 as an intimate sanctuary available to people of every belief......
Action takes the form of supporting human rights, and thus the Chapel has become a rallying place for all people concerned with peace, freedom, and social justice throughout the world.......
Mark Rothko, one of the most influential American artists of the mid twentieth century, was commissioned by the de Menils in 1964 and given the opportunity to shape and control a total environment to encompass his work, resulting in a group of fourteen paintings created specially for the meditative space....."

If you had said his work is crap, then that's a different matter. Personally, I find his work incredibly beautiful. Even these pieces, which are a little melancholic, are beautiful. I have not seen them in person, but understand that they are colourful in the sunlight, containing plums, dark reds, magentas etc. His more colourful pieces are just so vibrant. Byt each to his own.

Mark Rothko ๐ฑ๐ป Abstract Painting โข Art For Sale, by hanky on May 7, 2013 16:10:09 GMT 1, I have been there on a couple of occasions - there are seats around the outside and cushions on the floor to enjoy the experience and yes it is predominantly a plum colour, but also includes browns and black! In the same area is the Cy Twombly gallery and the Menil Collection which is also worth taking time out to see if you are in Houston. All purchased with oil money by the Schlumberger family and its heirs.

I am an aethiest. I dislike much of what has been done in the name of religion. But as an art lover it is difficult to overlook the influence of the church (I am thinking Christian, but applicable to other faiths), both good and bad. For centuries the church was the main patron of artists, which is reflected in their works. One only has to look at the work of Caravaggio, Michelangelo, etc. Religion holds no grip on me, but I do adore religious art. I would certainly not dismiss art because it has a religious influence or inspiration.

"Hate" is a bit juvenile, and does a disservice to your following thoughts which while personal evoke a bit of critical thinking, crucial to understanding art.
As to the "I hate God, religion, etc" Rothko was about so much more than that, and follows in a long line of great painters influenced by the church, for better or worse.

Mark Rothko ๐ฑ๐ป Abstract Painting โข Art For Sale, by aj2010 on May 8, 2013 16:57:36 GMT 1, But isn't true that the church restrained some of the great artists mentioned, and controlled their subject matter. If these artists were given free reign to do what they really wanted to do then the progression of art would have been leaps and bounds above what it was. We can only try and guess what magnificent pieces would have been created. If you have ever been the Lourve then you know that you can only see so much of Jesus suffering.

Mark Rothko ๐ฑ๐ป Abstract Painting โข Art For Sale, by Coach on May 8, 2013 17:45:02 GMT 1, Sure. But the artists needed patrons to be able to paint. And the great artists needed wealthy patrons. And in those days that was the church or the aristocracy. Hence the subject matter of the bulk of the work. Thats all history now. My point is that I don't have to be religious to love religious paintings.

Another example of religious art done well, that I saw recently, is Caravaggio's Cena in Emmaus... After walking around the museum for an hour looking at golden crosses, and all the usual iconography, then you come to this, and it's mind blowing... apparently pissed the church off too!
(If you're in Milan, get to the Pinacoteca di Brera)

Does anyone here have print 17/75 from the "Rothko's Modern Life (Nine)" edition? It's my go to number for prints and would make me VERY happy, it'd also calm down *some* of my OCD issues. I might be persuaded to make it worth your while if you'd like to swap for mine (18/75 - annoyingly). Here's hoping!!

I'd seen them about before - is it a popular series? Possibly showing my ignorance, but I don't really know Borf.
