They are quite overwhelming in person. I tend to gravitate towards the darker tones of his later pieces, they are quite ominous now that we know that his mind was slipping.

I then made a joke remark hence the smiley face, but unfortunately some people are just looking to argue and others just kiss ass liking posts rather than respond.
Yes this forum has changed, hence why I rarely post and take long breaks from it. certain people are holier than thou and have large sticks up their arse.
Take away the for sale section and the announcements of upcoming releases and you'll have a dozen users.
All the flipper outing is very boring. who cares, It happens get on with life. go cry to mummy, someone got there first.
Half the prints being released wouldn't sell out if you took potential financial gain out of it.
I don't flip, have sold about 4 prints in as many years or more, but if banksy has a crap print out next week i'll buy it to flip. I have a banksy print bought at source, never liked the image but who on here can honestly say they wouldn't buy something for ยฃ450 which is potentially worth ยฃ10k+. That will help my kids and i'd do it again.. Only those who are rich or those that are idiots wouldn't do it. And why do you have portfolios of prints? if it's not going on the wall......

His piece at MCATT in Chicago is the only painting that I've ever seen that has actually made me shed a tear.

I saw a play in LA a few years ago called "Red" with Alfred Molina as Mark Rothko (who was a Russian Jewish immigrant) that was pretty fascinating. One of his central ideas was that the spectator must collaborate with the work - which, according to the play is not required to the same degree by representational painting. The play is set in his New York studio in the late 1950s and deals with the angst he goes through in rationalizing having accepted a commission to paint a series of abstract murals for the Four Seasons restaurant in the Seagram Building as it contradicts his belief he is above pure commercialism. Ultimately he abandoned the project, returned the money and kept the work. I know that at least some, if not all of them, ended up at the Tate.

I believe there is also something inherent in literally anything being in a "coveted" massive space with 50 ft ceilings and white walls that may lend the illusion of it being something special with some powerful underlying meaning. Not saying this about Rothko in particular but there really is an undeniable suggestive power being at any major museum that most everything there should be important and meaningful to you because it is to others. I believe expressing one's true view should always be encouraged regardless if they are going with the majority or not. I did find the Richter exhibit fantastic there and a fan of Richter or not I highly recommend the below documentary which actually shows him in his studio creating his works and painfully obsessing over them until he deems them finished.
