Czarnecki - Tooth palace and Human fat chairs, by Coach on Jun 14, 2013 22:52:59 GMT 1, Now, if that isn't a thread title to catch your attention, I don't know what is!
My lad and I were looking round the Herbert gallery in Coventry a couple of weeks ago, with SPQR, and we stumbled accorss the art deco chairs by Czarnecki. The cushions that go under your bum are filled with human fat, extracted by liposuction, and donated. They become more comfortable as the fat warms to body temperature. Cool! But creepy!
Here's what the Coventry Evening Telegraph said:
"A couple of attractive art deco chairs have been reupholstered and filled with wax made from processed human fat removed through liposuction. Czarnecki likes to explore why people are reluctant to recycle human matter and why thereโs a taboo about using body parts โ probably because even though the chair may feel fairly normal to sit in, you canโt escape the yuck factor.
Most striking is a wall of dental casts, donated by the Trident Dental Lab, after it was deemed they were unsuitable to go into landfill. Entitled Diagram for a Summerhouse, the hundreds of casts take up a whole wall. Czarneckiโs father survived a Nazi concentration camp and his past also influences her work โ like Nazi victims, they all appear uniform, identical from across the room but close up the casts are all individual, showing the very personal shape of the mouth and teeth of each person."
And a pic of the chair:
Anyway, anyone with kids at the age where they are losing their milk teeth may be interested in the Tooth Palace.
Here's some pics:
And my son's completed form, including tooth:
As people who know me will know, I relish the wierd and the wonderful so far as art is concerned, and this is just fabulous, imo.

Czarnecki - Tooth palace and Human fat chairs, by Dr Plip on Jun 14, 2013 23:04:37 GMT 1, Fascinating.
If we can sit on our own arses all day, I don't see why we should have a problem sitting on someone else's arse.
Besides, if the chair has leather on it, what's a bit of fat?
I can see it being quite a talking point for the Herbert.
I love the Herbert.
I saw the tooth palace flyers last time I was there. I'm out of milk teeth, but if they can hang on a few more years.
Did your 14 year old really write that note? If so, I like his style very much.

Czarnecki - Tooth palace and Human fat chairs, by Coach on Jun 14, 2013 23:11:47 GMT 1, Yes plip, without a word from me. It was only because I liked what he had written that I shared it. All his own words. No idea whether what he has said about Sloths is true or not! And the chairs were very comfortable. Especially when warmed up!
