I realize repetition repetition is the basis for his whole Empire. But as a fan, who admires the man and the artist, I refuse to obey, consume and repeat. Lazy, rehashed imagery, garish colourways. An unholy hell amount of prints sitting (hopefully) in flat files, portfolios and secondary markets like eBay and galleries. People thinking they will pay for their child's college with the resale potential 10 years down the line. At this point it feels a just a little... lazy? greedy? sad?

His work still inspires me. Sadly, most of those works were made many years ago.

i only buy obey prints if i REALLY like them and that is sparingly.

he puts out so much that there's no need to collect everything (or even the majority).

this is my approach for most artists, but especially for obey.

Anyone score one?

Definitely would try for this one..decent looking print. .

COMMANDA MURAL PRINT RELEASE!


This “Commanda Mural” print is a co-publishing collaboration with the Ernst Hilger Gallery based on the mural I did in Vienna Austria near the gallery. I’m very excited about this print because the high end process used is very similar to photogravure, which is one of the earliest etching techniques used to reproduce continuous tone photography. In this case, the printing plate used is zinc, opposed to copper. The zinc plate was prepared with photosensitive varnish in acid bath to yield the printing surface for the black areas of the print. The black area of the work was printed by hand on printing press; the color part of the work was printed with lithography. The art was printed by the esteemed Stamperia Carini in San Giovanni Valdarno, Italy. The paper used is 100% cotton rag. Stamperia Carini uses only raw materials of the high quality for its editions.

All inks used in the printing process are the highest degree of resistance to the light available on the market; the paper usually used for the edition is the highest standard of pure cotton (100%). The print looks incredible in person and I’m very happy with how the process translated many elegant, and hard to capture, nuances. -Shepard

Absolutely love this! Surprised it was such an easy score.

I'm really glad Shepard moved out of his normal wheelhouse of 18 x 24 or letterpresses for this new release. I'm sure the print will look stunning in person and as a long time fan I really hope he continues to experiment with different stuff like this, as the lackluster or rehashed images of late almost had me losing faith!

Does Shep have something against index fingers? That looks awful.

I have to say, not impressed by this particular release, but there have been some notable works, despite the overwhelming release schedule. I particularly enjoyed, and continue to admire the Skull collaboration with Ernesto Yerena.

Also , just to record its existence , there was a yellow variant letterpress of The Laws of Physics released this week.
