Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by elwheel on Oct 26, 2013 1:57:27 GMT 1, I agree , this is his greatest show, his most complete display and I love quite a few parts of it. There are queries however over this timed and delayed announcement and perhaps the 'police ' notice.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by anodyne13 on Oct 26, 2013 2:08:32 GMT 1, Im with you fifthspray(and prob in the minority)....audio is great but the rest for me is meh I know I am going to get crap for this, but I am starting to lose my steam with this event. It seems a bit hokey, sterile and it is starting to get to the point of "Jumping The Shark". The combination of hipsters, band wagon fans, profiteers, reporters and well orchestrated stunts is wearing thin. I think your feelings are even alluded to in the audio for the grim reaper. "Banksy's take on that seems to be mounting an art show that goes on so long we wish we were dead already.."

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by stillborncrisps on Oct 26, 2013 2:12:36 GMT 1, I defy anyone to make a better show than this, underground, overground, whatever.
Even the less good pieces, and I initially thought of tonight's as one of them, when you just think of the logistics it's impressive..
To make tonight's, you got to find someone to build a frikkin robot dogem car, with a lifelike figure that moves, and set it on a flat surface, and find somewhere big enough to house it all, in central NY, and do it all in secret - and that's on top of the 30 other huge things you're doing this month!
How this guy isn't gonna have had a heart attack by halloween......

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by polaris on Oct 26, 2013 2:15:35 GMT 1, This is his greatest show, in fact one of the most ambitious and innovative things an artist can do of any art form. The mere idea of it is incredible. And with Banksy, its execution is just as remarkable. We will definitely be looking back at it thinking, what a gem to have experienced such a prolific artist's powerful work and conviction. And so will he. He's giving it to US. Let's enjoy it and not be so critical or ungrateful. The man is working his brain more than he ever has.

Agreed re the above tho- would be v interested to know the story of the cancelled art... One day maybe

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by guerilladubber on Oct 26, 2013 3:13:45 GMT 1, This was obviously not so easy to execute with a pre-crowd already ready to see the work before the set up was even complete. I can see why it was uploaded on the website a little late, let alone filming the piece, cutting it in Final Cut Pro and exporting it AND then uploading to Vimeo. No wonder Banksy has a Pro account, that way the video processes right away without having to wait. Anyway, my question is how did people know the location of the installation so soon before it was posted on Banksy's site? How did they know it'd be there, and that that'd be Banksy's work? I think BKBoy over on EB saw the Sickle and put 2 and 2 together. Might be wrong, but that's where I heard. This looks hilarious- the audio is just priceless.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Warm Gun on Oct 26, 2013 8:57:49 GMT 1, I was a bit disappointed when I saw the video this morning on vimeo, (possibly because we knew what was coming to some extent) then I heard the audio and that put a smile in my face, then I spent half an hour or so trawling through the other videos that members have kindly posted up on this site....and now I really like it, seeing longer videos of what's actually happening have really helped set the scene. I think you need to hear the accordion track and the other bits of music as a build up the 'Don't fear the reaper' track, that's the money shot of this piece. The joy on the reapers face when that Blue Oyster Cult track starts is just fantastic, that can't have been easy to portray. Good stuff, I'd have stood there for hours looking at it and looking at the people looking at it.
Nice one Ban Ski, Binksy, Backsy, Bambi, Brinski

The audio track adds perspective but to be honest even as a stand alone piece I love it. Its all about the interaction with the crowd for me. I can only imagine the carnival atmosphere from the video clips. This and a classic Banksy image.
Reaper and Sirens of the Lambs are two of my favourite works from "Better Out Than In". The outside gallery on West 24th Street was also pretty special.

Funny you mention that - one of the guys doing setup was Joe the Farmer. Another was the red hat mover guy who's been out with Ronald. Clearly not just hired actors. At the least, hired hands.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by drachinfire on Oct 26, 2013 13:05:05 GMT 1, I was a bit skeptical, even after seeing it unveiled. It was weird, mildly amusing and downright creepy with the accordian player. Then, the ominous strings well up and build. THEN, "Don't Fear the Reaper" starts, Grim throws his head back, the disco ball starts going, and the car just whirls around in circles with Grim maniacally laughing his skull off. Hilarious. Couldn't stop laughing.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by rioja on Oct 26, 2013 13:32:08 GMT 1, I love this piece even more in the cold light of the morning after. So, so wish I could see it in the flesh but the videos are great viewing. Anyone who can, out of nowhere, get people dancing on the streets, laughing alongside a headbanging grim reaper riding a dodgem under disco lights in the middle of New York is a genius in my book.
Pure, unadulterated joy - not often you hear that phrase when looking at art, especially when it's related to death!
