Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Ruggs on Oct 28, 2013 16:29:04 GMT 1, 'Spits on graves'?!!! Eh? This must be NYC's version of the Daily Mail: Find it slightly irritating that they have Banksy as there lead cover article and Lou Reed, one of the US's greatest musical talents gets a much smaller mention top left.

I, however, am not at all upset that the Giants-Eagles box, which would ordinarily dominate the front page, was relegated to the upper corner. My beloved Eagles did not fare well.
Also, this whole headline, the "spitting on the graves of the victims," is so absurdist that only the NYDL would put it on the cover and keep a straight face. I believe he actually said the designers and planners of One World Trade spit on the graves of 9/11 victims by building such a shitty replacement for and tribute to the WTC and Twin Towers.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Wearology on Oct 28, 2013 16:39:07 GMT 1, I read the NY Times Op piece on Banksy's website yesterday and I can see how the Daily News could interpret it as offensive & insensitive to the victims of this tragedy. Whoever wrote it sounded like a pompous elitist that has lost their grip on historical topics that are important to the common man. Next time Bansky shouldn't listen to his PR representatives so much and follow his gut. Maybe he should go back to spray painting farm animals and carnival rides to get back in touch with his roots. Talking smack about 9/11 is a no no in America especially by a foreigner who wasn't here to experience that awful day and the psychological & physical toll it took on the American people and the countless other international families that were affected by this event. Banksy should stick to art and building his brand in preparation for his LA show in a few months and leave America's national tragedies to it's citizens to sort out.

We're both entitled to our opinions but to me it was art in a nervous laughter a la George Carlin kind of way. It was intended to (and succeeded in) provoking the reader but I can appreciate that it is too dear of an issue for many to read as I did.

Banksy print donated to Bristol arts venue, The Cube
A rare Banksy artwork has been donated anonymously to an independently-run arts venue in Bristol which is campaigning to buy its building.
The Cube, which must find £185,000 before 31 December when its leasehold expires, intends to auction the print.
The work comes from the "Di-faced tenner" series - a set of spoof £10 notes replacing the Queen's head with an image of the late Princess of Wales.
The signed and authenticated framed print was one of 50 produced.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Carrie on Oct 28, 2013 17:33:45 GMT 1, Warning long boring post, hit your ignore buttons now if you don't want to see the result! After he posted on his website saying the 'Waiting in vain' guy was not a permission piece; aka not legal, so illegal. I thunk something... Graffiti from it's inception and by it's nature is illegal, painting on someone else's property without permission, that the owner didn't want, is illegal vandalism. Banksy's 'Better out than in' show is all about him going back to his routes as an illegal graffiti writer (he used 'graffiti' rather than 'street artist' in the voice interview I think). Following on from 'Exit through the gift shop' and perfectly summed up with the Central Park $60 stall, he is telling us the values of illegal graffiti are where his heart is rather than the shallow b*llsh*t of the art establishment. He's eschewing immediate financial gain to do wot he loves in the only way he knows how, and I say 'immediate' because I'm sure he's well aware that through his audacity, the world's media and social media hype, the long-term career benefits far outweigh a few dollars now. But this where my little mind got confused, and his post about the 'Waiting in vain' guy started it... the scenario is Banksy's back painting illegally, on the streets of NY, and telling the world this is what he's gonna do, giving everyone knowledge on advance (which must be a first in itself!). So my point is, although he's doing all these paintings illegally on peoples properties around NY, no one's gonna complain, no one's going to report him to the NYPD, and scrub their wall 'til it's totally removed (unless he hasn't owned up to doing it). In actual fact they're protecting them, even after they've been tagged or damaged. So are they still illegal? m.animalnewyork.com/2013/can-banksys-illegal-art-defy-nycs-graffiti-law/I think the article animalnewyork posted the 23rd addressed these points rather well. I do agree that he is emphasizing the graffiti aspect as well as the illegal aspect and is definitely listening to what's being said. I feel he prides himself on doing things the old school way so to speak illegally and wants to make sure people understand this. Thus the clarification in the hustler piece. know matter how much money you have being true to your roots is the best you can do regardless of what anyone does with his pieces after the fact. As long as he knows he did them for his reasons, those same reasons he probably started painting on a wall in the first place. Regardless if people call it street art I call it graffiti because he still represents that aspect in his work. A progressive form of graffiti. These are all interesting points, and I agree with the majority. But has anybody considered the idea that Banksy just wanted to go back to doing some illegal pieces for nostalgic purposes, for the buzz, for fun! I mean, I used to paint (badly) when I was a kid, and felt a buzz not getting caught - there must be differences painting legally and illegally (in terms of how much enjoyment you get from them.)
A lot of people believe he will go into retirement and this is his last show, maybe he did it this way as this was the most enjoyable...

if he's been an artist/writer/vandal for 20+ years then why would he stop now? He has the money to retire so it's down to the love of doing what he's doing that makes him continue in my opinion

As I would be pretty sure he wouldn't be doing this if that was the case. Pretty sure he has a team etc but I would suggest that he does most of his own spraying. Otherwise I would have assumed he would be doing a gallery show.

As I would be pretty sure he wouldn't be doing this if that was the case. Pretty sure he has a team etc but I would suggest that he does most of his own spraying. Otherwise I would have assumed he would be doing a gallery show. i dont have proof but comeon... why does he need to paint them him self...
he prob doesnt even cut the stencils out himself..
hes prob not even there...

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Carrie on Oct 28, 2013 18:15:31 GMT 1, These are all interesting points, and I agree with the majority. But has anybody considered the idea that Banksy just wanted to go back to doing some illegal pieces for nostalgic purposes, for the buzz, for fun! I mean, I used to paint (badly) when I was a kid, and felt a buzz not getting caught - there must be differences painting legally and illegally (in terms of how much enjoyment you get from them.) A lot of people believe he will go into retirement and this is his last show, maybe he did it this way as this was the most enjoyable... Retirement before 40? No way! Seems odd, yes, but, everyone keeps mentioning how big this show is, how much attention he has grabbed etc. I remember another forum member previously writing on this thread that they believe there will be no other street art show/stunt bigger or better than this one. Where else can Banksy go from here? A years residency on the streets of new york? doesn't seem likely. A months residency somewhere else? doesn't seem likely either, would it turn into a "world tour" for Banksy, can't see it. Or what about doing a museum show? Wouldn't seem like Banksys kind of thing doing that, and it would destroy all meaning in this show - so what would you say is going to be Banksys next move?

hes prob not even there... It's quite simple really....it's because that's what he dos he's a graffiti artist. people tend to do that. Have you never considered that he might enjoy it??? Would also suggest that the basis that your wrong is if he did not want to do it why would he go to all this trouble when could just get the same other people to knock out canvasses for him drop them I to the Opera Gallery and done deal.
