Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Invaded 420 on Oct 28, 2013 19:28:07 GMT 1, Again it's clearly free hand with stencil text at bottom. Look how the r circle and o are deffo not stencil as the middle couldn't be cut out of a stencil like that. Gotta leave bits joining the outside

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Agent Provocateur on Oct 28, 2013 19:29:05 GMT 1, Johnny... pretty sure the 'Accent' piece is a stencil! Just between me and you accent cant be a stencil. Look at the o an r. Dammit, ok part stencil, the '... normally I write like this' is definitely paint through a hole.
Still not convinced about the rest either, the over spray seems wrong for freehand, more what you get when using a stencil (the o and r could have had bridges, then filled, or held with wire so it doesn't show).

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Invaded 420 on Oct 28, 2013 19:30:31 GMT 1, I always thought the New York accent piece was a stencil but now looking closer I dont know. If he actually did not use a stencil he did almost a perfect job using a caligraphy tip on a spray can. The reason why it looks like a stencil is because these caps dont spray this perfect look at all the top parts of the tag, yet the bottom portions fade away and are not clean what you would expect from a normal tag. I would need to see a high res photo to really tell. just look at the letters. It's freehand dude

Look how the r circle and o are deffo not stencil as the middle couldn't be cut out of a stencil like that. Gotta leave bits joining the outside I would normally agree with you but I have used all types of these tips and they never spray this consistent which makes me think its a stencil yet it does look freehand let me try to pull up a high res of this image somewhere. This looks like a chisel tip font a calligraphy tip has a much different spray than this but I cant say either way definetly which goes to say if it is a stencil he did a hell of a job faking it.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by graffuturism on Oct 28, 2013 19:40:41 GMT 1, After looking at the high res images and even looking at the Omar tag that was using a caligraphy tip there is no way that this is a freehand tag. I think what he did was stencil it perfect then add some fades and overspray to make it look less perfect after the stencil was off. If this was freehand due to the nature of how a can sprays to have it this perfect his hand would have to have been the same distance at all times from the wall in order not to have the fade aspect that happens when the can is angled in any way, as well as drips when he stopped which there isnt any. Spray cans dont spray consinstant lines in this way in thickness, covering too much perfection to be a real tag which is mostly made of imperfections. Yet he did a great job. I could be wrong but thats my professional opinion. Either way it doesnt matter to me if it was stencil or not I liked the piece just wanted to clarify some of the arguments.

Used Same Caligraphy Tip that the New york accent was mimicking. Different handstyles but look at all the inconsistanancies in the spray of a real tag vs a stencil version. Drips fade from large to small, etc etc.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by mmmike on Oct 28, 2013 19:49:40 GMT 1, Retirement before 40? No way! Seems odd, yes, but, everyone keeps mentioning how big this show is, how much attention he has grabbed etc. I remember another forum member previously writing on this thread that they believe there will be no other street art show/stunt bigger or better than this one. Where else can Banksy go from here? A years residency on the streets of new york? doesn't seem likely. A months residency somewhere else? doesn't seem likely either, would it turn into a "world tour" for Banksy, can't see it. Or what about doing a museum show? Wouldn't seem like Banksys kind of thing doing that, and it would destroy all meaning in this show - so what would you say is going to be Banksys next move? Things don't have to get bigger and bigger to be great. He could do smaller more meaningful pieces. I have no idea what he will do next but that is all part of the fun.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by FЯ on Oct 28, 2013 19:53:03 GMT 1, Some of the pieces this month feel a bit watered down for america. What happened to the dark and grungy concepts like barcode or bomb hugger Either that or im boring of banksy.
I dont get that little twinge anymore in my pecker when you see a good banksy piece which makes you raise a smile.
Whats with the robot one today? That article for the newspaper was just stupidly self indulgent and the tag on the back or the van and on the wall yesterday was a bit meh. The reaper was an old idea from years ago. Probably the best piece so far was that banksy stall as it really got people going.
Someone is getting middle aged with a kid...hopefully something edgy will come in the next few days.

Nice, but that's the perspective and price of being an early adopter. Am sure similar was said somewhere in the 70s about Warhol and why he's wasting his time doing lame portraits instead of car crashes and electric chairs. Why Is Picasso so focused on these silly huge Matador's instead of cubist subjects, the man's gone soft? And for Christ's sake why isn't Clapton playing crossroads?
I'm grateful for some of that perspective and regardless, that crazy horse piece was as good as anything he's ever done.

I didn't love the reaper myself.
Though i'm not sure we've ever seen this many pieces so close together before. Usually he takes his time to develop location and concept to fit perfectly. I can't imagine the amount of research Banksy and his crew did to get to know NYC so well. They must have a few locals helping them. Most folks who live in NYC for 20 + years don't visit as many places in the city that he has hit in a month. Think about it. Every 5-10 blocks is a different universe here. He's smashed this town. Just saying

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by frithar on Oct 28, 2013 20:14:11 GMT 1, Talking smack about 9/11 is a no no in America especially by a foreigner who wasn't here to experience that awful day and the psychological & physical toll it took on the American people and the countless other international families that were affected by this event. Banksy should stick to art and building his brand in preparation for his LA show in a few months and leave America's national tragedies to it's citizens to sort out. If the one book (Seven Years With) is accurate, Banksy *did* live in New York for some time right before 11 Sept. 2001. I think New York's been important to him for some time.
