HBD Wizzy! The obvious answer is DUMBO. I walked the entire neighborhood and I'm pretty sure there was not a new mural today.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by nrgball on Oct 7, 2013 0:42:21 GMT 1, That's funny. I found it a little, for want of a better word, unsettling. Don't get me wrong, I'd be in there, but it makes for an odd image. What I had in mind when I snapped the series of photos this is from is a Reuters image from St Peter's Square when Francis was announced as the new Pope. A sea of thousands of illuminated mobile devices held aloft in outstretched hands photographing the moment. A stunning image that perfectly captured our socially connected digital age, which, in my humble opinion, is a major theme of Banksy's NYC event.
You mean like this?

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by sohohoho on Oct 7, 2013 1:57:34 GMT 1, It would be nice to hear what members take from this video apart from salivating over the possibility it's a clue to the next location. Is it a comment on the "war on terror", Dumbo/Disney signifying America? If so, what is the definitive comment? Is there a hint of Tyranny? Have we not seen this before through James Cauty? Maybe it's simply a tale of loss of innocence as suggested by Chris Lambert on YouTube?:
"In case anyone is wondering what genre this falls under: it's a loss of innocence tale, commenting on not just American loss of innocence (a childhood icon falling) but on the terrorists' loss as well (the kid kicks the rocket man). The thematic density and gravity here is impressive."
Another by alphabees:
"Our reality is destroying the reality that kids know of. More and more they are being exposed to what is happening in the world, and how soon it will be turning to s**t. Their world of bright colors and cartoons are slowly turning into what we see."
Another angle by Wogsy Kirk:
"This video is brilliant because the kid who kicks the adult at the end is saying it all. I believe it's a comment on the absurdity of most of these conflicts about religious wars on culture. Extremists target music, dance, and other fine arts as unholy, while those who have yet to be indoctrinated just want to explore the realms of their imagination. The kid is open minded and was kinda pissed they shot down a beautiful flying elephant "
snoresnoresnorlax in opposition to Wogsy Kirk:
"Haha oh yeah what a brilliant insight you have there! It's religious extremists that quash entire cultures and marginilize minorities, I've been mistaken this whole time!* It's not at all the secular, imperialist, capitalist ruling forces that ruined Latin America and the Middle East and robbed billions of people of their autonomy and dignity, it was a couple of dirt-poor Afghans in the desert wearing turbans who have oppressed our creativity! Walt Disney is just a common man's hero."
*sarcasm

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by graffuturism on Oct 7, 2013 5:47:17 GMT 1, Not sure how I really feel about the new video, when you enter a medium that many contemporary artists have been using for awhile now it isnt as groundbreaking as you would think. Coming from a urban artist it could be considered cutting edge, not sure how to really gauge its real impact. I could argue for the street pieces and the truck even if the truck was similar to other installations Atleast he put it in the public space differently than other contempories. The video is just a video I cant argue for it as much as the other pieces.
On a side not these pieces seem to be all over the place in regards to concept kind of like an artist not having any real dialogue amongst the pieces. Its still early so maybe there will be a string of concept that ties everything into each other, right now this mis match group of work seems a bit all over the place from the perspective of the intial week so far. If I where walking through any exhibit even one being in the outdoors seeing how the pieces all work together is tough. If he does consider this a show outdoors it could be critiques from the same perspective as a regular exhibition, meaning if all these pieces where in one room would they all work together or tell a story.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Deleted on Oct 7, 2013 6:19:57 GMT 1, Sometimes I wonder ( and I think banksy is touching on this in this show do far) that people have their heads wedged so far in their navels they miss the woods for the trees.
The simplicity, the audacity, the belittlement of entitlement, the cross over of graff rules, practices, coupled with street art sensibilities to a wider audience leave those continually trying to contextualise and look for a contemporary art parallel floundering... Or at least reaching for their thesaurus.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by graffuturism on Oct 7, 2013 6:28:00 GMT 1, Of course that is what I stated, from todays perspective that is what I see. Its Banksy regardless what he does it will be hard to meet expectations, as the public expectations are extremely high. Just the tone seemed a bit exagerated as having some deep philosophical and political undertones. If we want to judge the work from that perspective than that opens up a whole level of discussion. Until there is more context and we see the end result Ill wait to really praise the pieces as high conceptual works.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Wearology on Oct 7, 2013 6:30:58 GMT 1, I believe this show has more to do with Banksy the man than Banksy the artist. Banksy is supposedly turning 40 this year and that number usually scares people that use their physical abilities for their livelihood like an athlete, street artist etc. Banksy is rumored to be living in LA married with a kid or 2 so a big show in NY may be his last chance to escape LA for a month and his kid is young enough to not realize daddy's been gone for 4 weeks. This could be our guy's last chance to do a time consuming extravaganza so why not go big and historical back to the roots of the street art movement like NYC. There is absolutely nothing last minute about this show from placement of the pieces to the chronological order of each installment. Banksy is our generations Keith Haring and we should relish every moment of his genius. I am so proud of the NY four members for sharing their pictures, insight and observations the past few days. The whole world is watching our site and .info has stepped up their game and has come together like a family.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by graffuturism on Oct 7, 2013 6:48:28 GMT 1, Dont get me wrong Im rooting for him he is one of us, meaning an artist coming from a graffiti background. Regardless if he ever makes a great work again he has my upmost respect. I just try not to be another fan who cant be objective, I love art also so I look forward to also seeing great new work.
Also as wearlogy says, I also apprciate the coverage from everyone. Its good to come on here and be able to see real time happenings and reactions.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Oct 7, 2013 6:59:02 GMT 1, Really hope he goes big like blu or roa!! (or bigger)Just produce a huge piece that makes everyone go wow!! Yes it's an exciting month, just I am hoping for the big WOW piece/day. He's got the resources/people to pull something huge off, be underwhelming if he doesn't.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by iamzero on Oct 7, 2013 7:09:51 GMT 1, Why does there have to be hidden meanings to something? Is it so hard to believe that an artist could actually say ' wouldn't it be funny if...?'
It's quite often why song writers don't tell you what lyrics mean because more often than not its just a set of words that just fit really well. Then some idiot will tell you it shows us the artists relationship with his father when its really about whether he should have sausages for tea. These are the same people looking for satanic messages by playing records backwards.
Love it for what it is.

Sorry if this is overly critical but it seems that you're somewhat trying to typecast how this should be evaluated and that seems somewhat restrictive.
It's an interesting perspective, never the less.
I've yet to come to any conclusion with the overall meaning (if there is one) but I'm willing to look at this from a view that it isn't simply what the art world tells me to do.

Love it for what it is. art in all forms isn't simply a one way conversation, the viewer/listener etc etc takes what they want/can from it - they may well have meanings that are valid to them, that the artist had no idea about. Does that make their interpretation less valid? No, just more personal.

I dont think I care about what it means in the artworld, my perspective is what it means in general. Because people have called it a exhibition or show in the streets then I am trying to use that as a way to break it down or critique it. It is also called a residency which would normally mean work created in an environment or place, this meaning maybe could better define what is happening. Maybe it really is just a residency with no real intent other than to create new work for the city. If this is the case then I would judge each work individually, some I like better than others. Im not trying to get too analytical just trying to engage the work from an objective position. I will say that he is using new mediums outside of street art, these new mediums such as the installation and video are very "artworld" or contemporary in nature. I dont want to speculate as its early but just sitting here like everyone else commenting on it. My tone however is just not as praising, yet.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by naughtyshorty on Oct 7, 2013 7:27:12 GMT 1, Fair point, but I guess the point being made is that sometimes we can all search too far for a hidden meaning to something, where actually it doesn't exist and the artist is communicating nothing more than a simple view. If someone wishes to interpret the output in the context of their own life then all good, but that make generate a meaning totally unrelated to whatever the artist had intended. Which is all good as well!

An artist could do this, but banksy doesnt seem to be an artist that has ever done this. Even if its a simple comment or a deeper one, he is saying something. These works are not just for aesthetic purposes or just to be made.

Yes, getting away from home will be a real chore from now on. I mean, it isn't like he does this for a living. And it isn't like any other 40+ year olds have careers that take them away from home for a few weeks at a time.
In a previous post you called Banksy "our generations [sic] Picasso", now it is Haring? Do you just throw random names out there in the hopes that someone will think you have some conception of art history?
When you say that the "whole world is watching our site", are you talking about New York or this website? If you mean the latter, I just want to point out that the most users this site has had at any one time is 2,676 and that was on 29 June 2010. At this moment there are 40 members and 129 guests online.

Just the tone seemed a bit exagerated as having some deep philosophical and political undertones. If we want to judge the work from that perspective than that opens up a whole level of discussion. Until there is more context and we see the end result Ill wait to really praise the pieces as high conceptual works.
The tone being exaggerated is called taking the piss. And I think you are looking at this far to deep and making your self not enjoy it. Sit back and enjoy the ride :-)

Agreed, but I was referencing the comments that sohohoho posted. I enjoy the conceptual part of his work and trying to digest what is happening, its how I am enjoying it. I wouldnt just enjoy work being created, I read books also I dont necessarily enjoy reading them, yet I appreciate the knowledge and perspective gained. Each of us gets what we want from these pieces and all art. My perspective is only one of many each having their own reasons from a laugh to a deep thought.

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by camosydney on Oct 7, 2013 8:18:08 GMT 1, Not sure how I really feel about the new video, when you enter a medium that many contemporary artists have been using for awhile now it isnt as groundbreaking as you would think. I hear what you are saying, im not actually expecting these works to 'link' in anyway, i think it is what is ... i also think the video is great and remember ...... even god rested on the 7th day

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by Black Apple Art on Oct 7, 2013 8:22:51 GMT 1, I thought it was all just a bit of fun. "So people still cup Banksy's balls? Must be all the IPhone users." I saw it as two quite different meanings...
1) Showing how the average taliban member has really stepped up their technological game and can easily convert your standard RPG to a FIM-92A Stinger SAM.
2) This video also shows Banksy's obvious strong feelings towards Dumbo and suggests this character possesses such a warm personality and heart that Dumbo's heat signature could be mistaken for a modern jet engine.
Let's just sit back an enjoy

Banksy - Better Out Than In - New York - BOTI, by johnnyh on Oct 7, 2013 8:42:54 GMT 1, Contrary to some of the comments I think this is moving along beautifully. re Banksys age and kids. Think it just means he's bigger and better and this is a big concept.
also when has he ever let you down.........glitter Gorrila.....fair enough
he has so far captured the worlds media, this thing is running in real time as the pieces develop and change, he has engaged the New York scene, his truck could be his first comment on the environment, last nights video show. A Muslim freedom fighter/terrorist shooting down Dumbo a consumer icon and proclaiming God is Good. so in a minute and a half you had religion, politics, war, consumerism, brands etcetc
social media is buzzing. If he had put this vid on his site last week how many views? Now how many so it's all in play now.
So we do not have all the answers yet but to be fair we have only looked at 6 pieces of a 31 piece show. Eg we are still at the entrance. There is still a lot to happen and see.
The video I think was a bit of a game changer. Both in its style and content. its all been nice and playful upto this point. muslims shouting God is Good after shooting down an American icon at a New York show starts to unravel that concept even though there is some humour with it.
So think things are building Upto some commentaries and statements. Roll on I say the show has just started
