When I read the comments on this thread by Nick, they seem perfectly rational.

The helpful links Loobaz provided to the eBay listings by contth3 / The Contemporary Chester appear to be for genuine sales as well. This gallery is owned by self-described "Investor & Entrepreneur" Jonathan Shingfield. He comes across like a contestant from The Apprentice and is also a convicted rogue landlord.

His recent eBay sales in November and December 2015 for Vandal King (the three I could find, in mint green, pink and blue) seem to have been for £144.00, £156.03 and £160.00. So that's presumably around the current market rate.

I guess this is what happens when so-called entrepreneurs who are clueless about art decide to bulk-buy as short-term investments. Blinkered greed can shut down a person's critical faculties. [What is the image anyway? Some priest with a balaclava holding up a newborn wearing a crown? You could call it nonsensical. Or perhaps (if being kind) esoteric. And the target market? Devout Christian graffiti writers? Monarchist mischief-makers?]

I've made similar comments before: You're selling here because you believe you can net a higher figure than by selling on eBay. That is fair enough.

But using a forum as a sales platform also means having to put up with the open exchange of facts and opinions by other members. It requires accepting, like an adult, that sometimes these open exchanges may not work in your favour. Just consider it the quid pro quo of benefiting from £0 in eBay seller fees.

The zero feedback of the winning bidder could also suggest shill bidding occurred, meaning the winning bid might otherwise have been even lower.

It's worth mentioning I couldn't care less about the print, and in large part the artist leaves me indifferent. My intention is just to offer words of caution for new collectors — encouraging them to learn more, think more, and ask themselves basic questions before spending three-figure sums on art. Questions like the following:

1. Why exactly do I like a specific work?

2. What does it have that alternatives in the same price range don't have, including originals or multiples by different artists who may be more established and widely recognised?

3. To what extent could my opinion be influenced by the herd? Or by the manufactured sense of urgency and manipulations of other people? Would I still appreciate the work if nobody else did and its financial value dropped to zero?
