DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by twist65 on Nov 22, 2013 11:37:19 GMT 1, To be fair I think its a bit of a minor thing in the grand scheme of things, granted I wouldn't agree if i was #45 in the queue and had travelled a long way, but at the end of the day you take your chances, no-one forces you to travel up for this, and unless there was an absolute sh!tload of APs there was never going to be the full edition available anyway. Most people would have guessed as much, its just a shame it wasn't communicated up front.
Would have been a hundred times worse if the show had been in London and there were 80 or so prints available at approx a fifth of market value. Laz put on what sounds like a pretty interesting show with some huge pieces, sketches and an affordable if very limited print. Queuers were issued with tickets early doors so none of the winter queue madness other print releases have had in the past. Not a bad effort really.

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by eschiff on Nov 22, 2013 11:38:43 GMT 1, yup, completely agree. That women in the gallery kept telling everyone to leave the queue and enjoy the show but there were only 6 (7?) pieces and the gallery made no effort to have any sort of atmosphere.
It's incredibly hypocritical to tell people at the beginning of the day you're going to do anything you can to prevent flippers and make sure everyone who lined up under 50 gets a print and then fucking sit there while a guy has 7 sets of prints in the corner with all his boyfriends duly coming up to him and giving him a set. It's funny that it seems that the gallery was intimidated by this asshat.

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by Dice on Nov 22, 2013 11:44:25 GMT 1, Attended last nights show and just got a etching which looks fantastic by the way. Met some great people.always nice to chat to other art nerds lol On the whole. The show was farcical. The organisation was a joke. I really feel for the people who didnt get a print. Laz said 50 were available so to take 10 away at the last minute when your customers have been waiting in the cold for hours and some travelled 250 miles to get a print was disgusting especially when the guy who worked there stated it was for their rich customers and needed to keep them happy. When I asked about why the show was sold out before preview night, again they sold to their and I quote"rich clients first" to me they should have given first refusal to the fans of daleast on preview night . I was really looking forward to buying a drawing of his, so to see it went to clients who could not be bothered to show up was a shame. Also did anyone notice the prices were higher in the gallery than on the email pdf? Unfortunately this is a gallery that cannot be trusted in my book and wont be buying from them again. As for the twitter comment. Referring to dals fans as print monkeys is unsulting the forum has bought the gallery alot of buisness yesterday and just because we couldnt get the chance to buy a original to dismiss us as thd lowest of the low was foolish. Most of the people in the queue were in their 20s/30s so what he fails to realise is that we are his future "rich clients" and forum members will not forget such comments Sent from my GT-I9505 using proboards Nice to meet some forum members yesterday in the queue, had a good time knocking about in newcastle looking for saunas with the ratcatcher, ha! Overall I thought the pieces were excellent, the massive lion being the (obvious) standout piece and not bad value I thought at around 6-7k when canvases half the size were 4-5k. The studies were amazing and I'm seriously kicking myself for not bothering to get the PDF now. The quality of the etchings is superb too, dawn being my favourite.
I thought the Outsiders attitude was pretty disgusting all round. I asked Ben when he was handing out tickets why they were going to release only 40 and he said, "well I need one, the other staff all need one and there might be others who need one too" and shrugged his shoulders. There was no respect for anyone in the queue. When asked whether we'd get lower numbers at the front of the queue he said no, as that would be "a complete nightmare" to organise. Sorry what's your job again??? He was really quite rude when handing out the prints too. We were also told not to try to talk to Dal if he turns up as "he doesnt like people". WTF.
However at least there was a ticketing system which meant we didn't have to stand around all day so credit for that.
I think prices in the gallery included VAT which is why they may have been different?

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by brody76 on Nov 22, 2013 12:33:56 GMT 1, yeah, it was pretty uncool all round. Reflecting on a show i like look at the whole experience rather than just the art (maybe that's my bad) but i thought the customer service was appalling and disrespectful and tbh honest the show itself was a little flat. Dals pieces were very impressive (those sketches totally ruled) and looked amazing that size but i'd like to see more effort in an actual show. Mau Mau at West Bank, Brainwash, Roa @ Stolen Space, Banksy in New York, etc, etc.
Maybe i'm just a little bitter but having wasted time and money to be gloated at by someone with 5 sets of prints in their hands will leave a bad taste...
It was great to meet some of the guys (and gals) from here though!
anyway, onwards and upwards, what's next Stik in New York? I'm sure if i catch the first plane i'll bag me a print! They let print monkeys into the US, right?

Sounds like the drawings were the pick, and looking at the pdf I have to say i agree. The canvas work does look impressive, but the drawings look very good. Its a shame i can't get up norf to have a proper look really.

He's one of the most passionate people i've met in this scene and defo not the rich-kid-with-attitude type or anything like that, can't believe he intentionally meant to upset anyone, the decision to restrict the number of prints won't have been his. I'm sure it was a stressful day.
Blame staying up all night to watch a pathetic batting collapse on my morning crankiness!

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by Forbidden Love on Nov 22, 2013 13:24:37 GMT 1, ok a few things I would also like to say.
it was wrong of them to keep 10 of them. - thats what a/p's are for! for friends/family.
Ben is quite young and seemed to be under pressure and was finding it hard to string a sentence together. I like ben but someone told me he was telling people 'oh your gonna put this on ebay then!'.
I think they have no right to judge people and say things to thier face infront of poeple.
this is what makes the whole thing a fuking disgrace. the people making assumptions about people. due to your sex/appearance.
and also there were talks of not selling one to someones brother. how the hell is that a reason not to sell one to someone because of their name. in the past I got my brother to buy a few prints but he got his pieces with me because I made him aware. yet he doesnt know much about street art but liked a few pictures.he doesnt live with me but we are brothers.
I can also confirm that there was someone with 6/7 sets - im not giving names but its true. I dont care what people do with their prints, if they put them on ebay or not its up to them. but dont think buying 6/7 is fair when there were people there who travelled all the way from london.
It was a s**t atmosphere as said above
but most importantly the art was amazing. loved all the works particularly the stag and the bear.

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by JAlternatiΓ³n on Nov 22, 2013 13:55:01 GMT 1, There was a few things that were shitty but par for the course at print releases where overnight they will be worth significantly more, but that's the 'game' aspect of it.
Two people that I know of had teams of people hired in to stand in the queue for them, one went off with 4 sets and one with 6 (I believe) - they now have 1/5th of the market!
There was someone who explained that they were being paid Β£7 (yes, SEVEN!) per hour to stand in the queue for somebody else
Ben, I think, was put in a difficult position. When he turned up in the morning, he was clearly surprised at how many people were already there and straight away said that he would sort out numbering so that people didn't have to wait in the cold. He didn't make the decision about the 40 not 50 prints. In the evening they were having problems with the card machine and had persons 41-50 hassling them about not having sets (including me), so I can understand why he (or anyone) may have made the odd flippant remark to the 2 crews of boys so clearly buying for other people.
Maybe I've softened because I got lucky in the raffle, maybe it's because I had some sleep. This has put off travelling long distances for big print launches now, but that's mainly due to the organised nature of people hiring in people to queue and then (literally) taunting the people who came away empty handed. That was plain shitty, and I don't want to spend my time near that, not even for a pretty picture.
There was a few things that were shitty but par for the course at print releases where overnight they will be worth significantly more, but that's the 'game' aspect of it.

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by dpart on Nov 22, 2013 14:12:59 GMT 1, The crappy thing about keeping 10 is that it was 10 of each! As much as we have been treating them as a set, they aren't a set. If they wanted to keep some they could have kept 10 in total or 5 set. Would have been fairer on people who travelled up for it.
I feel bad for Ben because it's not easy being confronted with a crowd of people all getting antsy to make sure they get a print because they have all travelled for it. He tried hard and he seemed like a decent kid. He may have been collecting since he was 14 but working in the art world is very different.

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by Gunny on Nov 22, 2013 14:16:42 GMT 1, I could pretty much guarantee that most of the people queuing were for the monetary resale value of the artwork, and not to guarantee a print for personal use or for the show itself. It pretty much sums up the whole scene these days, its a resale game and people generally only buy for resale value. I think all galleries, and i mean ALL GALLERIES, should have a payback system exactly like John Doe has done in the past. If you bought the last print and can justify with a photo and a newspaper to clarify that that is the day you bought the print, then you have first dibs on the new print, simple. Real people get the print they deserve.

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by dpart on Nov 22, 2013 14:21:44 GMT 1, I didn't buy for the resale potential or value. I really wanted to have it on my wall. Same with the people I was queuing with! Around me there were at least 10 people who just really wanted a print!
Can't comment about the people at the front since it's already been said about someone being paid to stand in for someone and someone who walked away with 6 sets.

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by dazarino on Nov 22, 2013 14:44:53 GMT 1, I think the guys who missed out would not have been so annoyed, if before they set off to the show everyone was told, only 40 would be released. To only make that decision when everyone was in the queue and infact when the queue got down to the last few people was not on. I was number 33 and didnt hear of it getting cut short so was a last minute decision.
The art was incredible though.

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by Deleted on Nov 22, 2013 15:32:36 GMT 1, That would explain a lot. What our Payney? He's 12 aint he? You'd have recognised him as he'd have had his mum with him.Β Sounds like the drawings were the pick, and looking at the pdf I have to say i agree. The canvas work does look impressive, but the drawings look very good. Its a shame i can't get up norf to have a proper look really.Β
I got a very bizarre PM from Payney a few months ago despite having never interacted with him on the forum. I got back to him to ask what've meant as it was just gibberish and he never replied. The guy's a weirdo!
I wasn't there but it really doesn't sound like the gallery had any respect for the people queuing and this has put me off from having any dealings with them in the future. They need to realise that they can't survive on the 'Rich client list' alone and that for them having a bad reputation can be very hard to shake off.

Think you have to take the "queue monkeys" comments with a shovel full of salt too - what else do you call people who stand in the cold freezing rain all day for a print, even though i'd be happy to do so myself you have to admit its a bizarre way to spend a day!!!
Looking forward to reading Payneys sale thread...

DALeast π¨π³ Wuhan, China β’ Street Art β’ Based in Cape Town, by mouser on Nov 22, 2013 16:17:59 GMT 1, As an aside, don't people have jobs anymore? Other than people moaning about not being able to buy the print they wanted to flip... apparently not. Small edition print being sold well under market value, there was always going to be unhappy campers no matter how it was dealt with, pretty sure the entire run could have been sold prior to the show to existing customers rather than sold via the shop to those willing to queue.
I had the pleasure of chatting with Ben last week, an informative, interested, keen and knowledgable individual with a genuine interest in art and what he is doing.
Not overly sure how the system could be improved, galleries seemed damned no matter how they release a print these days.
