When did buying art become like buying concert tickets?, by Deleted on Feb 21, 2014 13:19:31 GMT 1, Waking up early to get one....clicking refresh over and over...crossing your fingers that you're lucky enough to score one? Has it always been like this?
What happened to - "oh - I like this print, and I happen to have the cash right now so I'll get it"?
(yes, I'm bummed I didn't get a 'Scream' print haha)

When did buying art become like buying concert tickets?, by mikehaspey on Feb 21, 2014 14:35:06 GMT 1, Yeah it's a nightmare, I have lost out on probably the last 5 pieces I've gone for, despite being ready to go well in advance something always happens - sites crash, they oversell - so you think you have one and a few hours later you get a refund, or I'm just too slow? Today's was unreal, I was refreshing the page from 10:57 here and as soon as the 'add to cart' appeared I pressed it. Apparently though, at one second past 11 all the prints were sold or carted.... Crazy.

When did buying art become like buying concert tickets?, by Neate Michael on Feb 21, 2014 14:41:30 GMT 1, To answer the question, I blame Ebay.... Ebay gave people (flippers) the chance to get tickets for a concert they do not want to go to, and sell them on at a huge profit, without leaving their house.
And when these same people realised that there was huge profits to be made in Banksy prints, they started snapping those up to.
And they probably joined this forum, and to a certain extent, we (the non-flippers) direct the flippers to the prints by pages and pages of chatter.
The best thing we could do is close down all art forums ; )

When did buying art become like buying concert tickets?, by sakyamuni on Feb 21, 2014 14:57:12 GMT 1, It really depends on what you buy. Only a fraction is flying in a second, usually based on the potential value for resale. JR prints are available for months or years, same for artists like Todd James or Paul Insect, Invader latest invasion kit was available for days... Examples could go on and on... If you're looking to buy something great, here is one: Cyclop's latest print, Teenage Phantasm #102, available in different colors

When did buying art become like buying concert tickets?, by Deleted on Feb 21, 2014 15:01:20 GMT 1, Yeah, I guess I'll just have to keep trying on ones I like. It's just a shame that people who actually want to purchase and hang certain work can't get them because people/galleries are buying them up just to flip them right away and make a profit... Wish there was someway to dissuade this from happeneing.

When did buying art become like buying concert tickets?, by skynet on Feb 21, 2014 15:50:14 GMT 1, Integrity and morals seem to be going out the window as flippers now listing before they have the print/piece in hand to inspect for shipping damage and openly admitting this morning several members that their recent (don't even have proof the order won't be cancelled) purchase only bought to take best offers.

When did buying art become like buying concert tickets?, by ABC on Feb 22, 2014 1:08:54 GMT 1, The first time I noticed having to play the f5 game was when they released Grannies at POW in 06, before that you had loads of time to decide. I dont bother anymore, not worth the hassle or stress that used to be involved.

When did buying art become like buying concert tickets?, by Deleted on Feb 22, 2014 2:03:20 GMT 1, yeah it stinks. Prints sell for $100-$300, galleries buy a lot of them up and raise the price 10x, so individual sellers follow suit, making it really hard to find one for a reasonable price. what a drag. and unfortunately I'm in upstate NY so the only way for me to find anything is online

When did buying art become like buying concert tickets?, by sake on Feb 27, 2014 9:42:45 GMT 1, I must admit I got a Scream and is not planning on keeping it for myself, but I miss out on alot of other prints I want so I'm getting it so that I have something to trade for all the other prints I didnt get. That way I can get a print I want without having to take the markup out of my paycheck. Which I think is slightly better than flipping, but maybe not completly 100 % Mother Theresa ethical..

When did buying art become like buying concert tickets?, by Deleted on Feb 27, 2014 14:33:27 GMT 1, I love buying tickets from ebay. They are nearly always much cheaper than face value.
The whole point of limited edition print is to create demand. Same as limited edition anything.
In my opinion, just wait until theres originals you like at a price you can afford. The majority of the art I have bought has been cheaper than most sought after prints + framing.
If you want the ultimate exclusivity forget limited editions and buy originals.
In answer to your question though. All the art forums and ebay have lots to do with hype and reselling. I would say that the craziness started shortly after this forum opened. But I'm not too sure.
If missing out bothers you. Just slow down a little and try not to get involved(or even read) long threads talking about prints.
