Those are from the existencilism post-show party and there is a lot of history with those and other similar images from that show and party. Anything done pre pest control '08 could have some grey area depending upon the circumstances. Post '08, when they issued a firm statement, you're not going to see anything done in the streets get a COA imo. For the reasons outlined previously, it's a no good deed equation now and would only encourage us morons to get a hammer and saw whenever possible.

You've never lived on Brighton street in St Paul's ?. I like St Pauls. Just realise its a tough place to grow up. If you live near, you'll know the Salvation Army hostel, redwood house (closed a year ago). I worked in the hostels for 16 years. Outside the hostels chaos on a daily basis. Drugs, rapes (I've had to counsel women), violence and domestic abuse etc, etc. I know I've seen more than most, but I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Walk around Portland Square and up Brighton street on a night. Its lively. |

When I leave my job I want to do charity work with the homeless, drug users. People whose luck is down.

i wouldn't give them a penny to see it. I went to see it this morning when it was was free to see and had a little touch. I heard that they were taking it down to sell so I took a can of black auto spray paint with me but when I got there quite afew people were there plus the short fat dude and his mob I didn't fancy getting took to the ground and getting my face smashed in today.

Even if it wasn't stolen it would be tagged / defaced beyond recognition. Now whilst many will say 'That's what happens to a street piece' the truth is, it will be defaced so quickly simply because it is by Banksy. Thus, what you eventually get to look at looks nothing like what it was.
I don't even mind the owner asking a small charge for seeing the piece. His club is in danger of closing and he wants to raise as much money as he can. Over the years many people have made shit loads of money out of Banksy. Many people on this forum own works which have increased massively in worth from what was originally paid but no one begrudges them that, as they were his supporters from the early days. If you own a Banksy that's great because not every one does. Many others, who aren't in the least interested in the art, have acquired his works cheaply with the sole intention of selling on for a huge profit. Such profits don't benefit the community.
I think it clear to anyone that the owner of the club won't be lining his own pockets but is selling it for the right reasons. I'd rather the club benefits from the sale of this work rather than have the Council own it - it just isn't right that they own a Banksy work given that at one time they wanted Banksy arrested /locked-up and put out of action. Additionally, in my youth I was a member of a locally run boxing club which, at the very least, helped many youngsters keep of the streets and out of trouble and at most most made decent boxers out of others. The people who run these clubs work tirelessly with very little monetary gain and often struggle to pay the rent and buy new equipment etc.
So, I hope the owner gets as much as possible to help keep the club open for a long while yet.

Personally I do not believe that Banksy purposely executed the work knowing it could be removed easily and therefore used by the club as some kind of charitable and benevolent act, I believe had he wanted to benefit the club he would have donated to them a painting to sell, as he has done with others in the past. I believe that this one should have stayed put and been tagged like any other work on the street, alas I can see it in Bankrobbers inventory or coming to a saleroom near you soon.
