New Banksy?, by Dr Plip on Apr 16, 2014 9:13:59 GMT 1, Call me stupid, but if Banksy wanted to help the boys club, wouldn't it have been easier for everyone if he just dropped off a painted canvas with Pest Control COA for them to auction?
Why take the risk of putting up a piece near the club, not on property the club owns, then posting it on his website, telling the world about it, while also hoping that the club owners notice that it's for them and that they take it down before someone else does. And then making them take it, possibly getting them into trouble in the process. AND it's not easy to use a screwdriver while you're wearing boxing gloves.
Edit: Yours sincerely, Stupid.

Stupider here, trying to be stupidest. On my slightly less stupid days, I struggle to remember Banksy putting up pieces that are so easily removable, perhaps he didn't want to make a big thing out of the donation? Perhaps he wanted it to be on the street, for long enough for the fans to get their pic's? Perhaps we'll only know when PC give it a COA or not?
much love

New Banksy?, by Deleted on Apr 16, 2014 9:40:34 GMT 1, The removal of it is on the BBC 10 o'clock news... calling it a 'mural'!!!! When did the f******g word mural become the norm!? I've only seen it used since 2012... I wish it would stop, it's a f*****g crap word! Stencil, vandalism, graffiti, painting, spray art, ugly... woteva, just not a word that sounds like it's a council instigated community painting that's designed by committee. I'm still chuckling at Street Art News calling Banksy's recent Cheltenham piece a 'mural'. I guess it helps SAN and others to sell screen prints easier to the chattering classes. Street art / urban art/ yadda yadda is not just socially acceptable, its absolutely embraced by the chattering classes- but only a certain part of the scene of course - see the South London ( East Dulwich) work of late- when the professional art facilitators and wealthy gallery lackeys get involved and start shouting its praises, in the background, you can hear those final nails being banged into them coffins.
Obviously if you are ethnic, poor and do a bit of a tag now and then, you are still a criminal

Could not agree more. We have seen Tox, Oker, Ceres, G. Money and Bice all jailed in recent times while other street artists have used cherry pickers to put up large murals.

Perhaps he wanted it to be on the street, for long enough for the fans to get their pic's? Perhaps we'll only know when PC give it a COA or not?
much love
mr. st st st stupido (is that a phil collins song?)
Dear Mr St st st stupido,
Thank you for your reply. However, I can't believe it's true that Banksy intended this as a donation to the club. While I agree that it was a very "removable" piece, and in his home town, I wouldn't have thought he would place a work somewhere that they would have to "steal" it from. If you want to be a hero, why potentially get club members in trouble or create negative press for them? But then again, it's not everyday that these clubs get this sort of publicity, so maybe it'll be a wake up call for the local community, and they can help support the club in future. But do you remember a previous charitable donation made in this way? Does he normally make charity groups overcome a series of skill-testing challenges?
I know that these days, a Banksy work has to survive against all odds just to survive one more night after they have gone up, but that's just the way it is. If a piece can hang in long enough to be enjoyed, great. If a Banksy gets damaged or removed while I'm on my way to see it, so be it. And nobody likes to see street pieces ending up as some sort of trophy piece in an apartment or mansion somewhere (except maybe the apartment or mansion owners), but is it logical to assume that every easily stealable Banksy piece is now intended for a local charity or group? No matter who?
But then what do I know? I guess we wait and we wonder and I'm sure if Banksy did intend this to happen, we'll soon get both sides of the story, like you said, when the piece ends up at auction with Pest Control Cert.
Yours sincerely,
Stupid
P.S. You ought to know that I can't stop loving you.
Edit: Having said that, the piece doesn't need PC COA, as it's been featured on Banksy's website.

Just imagine the battle in their minds, 'graffiti bad, tags vandalism... oooh we like that mural, hope it's not vandalised'.
The best example I've seen of this was the 2012 Olympics, (if I remember correctly) local writers have an exclusion zone around the park imposed on them (were walls buffed as well?), then the authorities organise an official event with artists they've chosen so they can control what's seen/painted.

New Banksy?, by letiss on Apr 16, 2014 11:11:32 GMT 1, I for one hope that Bristol Council pay this guy a visit and get their property back. This appears to be theft, no more no less and although for a seemingly good cause it's still a criminal act. As a forum, we're very happy to call out people that pinch Invaders etc, so this is no different. It's for the council to decide if they want it left on the street, put in a museum or sold to pay for something like charity and not some local guy that doesn't own the wall to decide.

Just my penny's worth - (I don't have a legal background as you know):
The piece was pre-painted/stencilled on plywood - then leaned up and screwed to a council door. The council own the door - not the plywood which the piece was painted on - it belongs to Banksy.
When this piece was removed - the council door was not damaged in removing - and the council still have thier property i.e. their door.
So would they have any legal redress about something that wasn't theirs?
If I leaned up something against the council door - say a mattress - anyone walking buy would be in their right to remove it, bin it or sleep on it or sell it - The council may have a right to pursue me for fly-tipping, as they would have a right to pursue Banksy for vandalism - but not the guy that removed what was not theirs in the first place.
If this was stencilled on the actual door that the council owned then you are right.
But I think this Boxing club owner is in the clear - unless banksy comes back asking for his property - which I doubt he will.

If this was on the actual door that the council owned then you are right. But I think this Boxing club owner is in the clear - unless banksy comes back asking for his property - which I doubt he will. it's an extremely grey area, but the CC may claim the piece as it was physically attached to it's property with screws and not free standing
I for one hope that Bristol Council pay this guy a visit and get their property back. I hope you're well letissJust my penny's worth - (I don't have a legal background as you know): The piece was pre-painted in plywood - then leaned up and screwed to a council door. The council own the door - not the plywood which the piece was painted on - it belongs to Banksy. Where are people getting the idea it was preprinted in the studio and banksy just screwed it up?
buls**t the piece was painted in situ and that wood was there for years! Some of the screws were rusty
then afte they took the councils door the blocked it's back up again with 3 pieces of board and quickly painted them black thinking nobody would no
