"It look less than 24 hours for the scavenger hunters of street art to track down the latest work by the infamous graffiti artist known as “Banksy” … lovers embracing in a doorway, their faces illuminated by the smartphones which capture their loving gaze."

New Banksy?, by dreadnatty on Apr 16, 2014 22:20:30 GMT 1, Oh dear this has degenerated quickly, such a shame that each time Banksy releases a piece someone stands to profit. The person who grabs/steals it first, is then surrounded by their new self appointed art experts/enforcers who then proceed to inform them of its potential value. Reminds me of the Sphinx piece in NY last year that the car repair shop worker claimed and then sold or gave on commission to a gallery to sell. Workers had no idea until that lady with the phone started calling galleries from them and got the white van in and hauled it away. I don't think its been seen since. I'm now in favor of all the pieces being left to the vandals. Much better than all these greedy profiteers trying to get rich quick. Actually they were guarding it and had taken "ownership" well before she arrived on the scene. She just claimed to be some art insider and tried to get in on the action. But your overall sentiment is valid, it is all vandalism after all. she was working those phones like a real pro ! Wizzy, you were at the Sphinx???

Banksy does it, all the fan boys offer him their rear.
Stay classy you plonkers.

New Banksy?, by graffuturism on Apr 16, 2014 22:56:55 GMT 1, Glad to hear its going to the right place, the museum of Bristol so everyone can see it. I look forward to visiting it. Finally we can enjoy the art. Not sure its the right place, if Banksy wanted to donate a piece to an institution I think he knows how to do that. But these pieces have a life of their own and will always end up in places they were never intended for. I think conservation is good in some aspects but the sense of entitlement some people have for street work is debatable.

I would actually preferred it would of been left in place but the other alternative discussed in the thread you quoted is to have it auctioned off by a boxing club manager who took off the wall. So being in a public museum seems a little more palatable than in a private collection Imo.

New Banksy?, by Happy Shopper on Apr 16, 2014 23:15:05 GMT 1, So... If any other artist had ripped a stock image off they would be hung up and done up the rear with hot pokers. Banksy does it, all the fan boys offer him their rear. Stay classy you plonkers. Strange comment. 1. No one knew anything about a similar stock image until very recently. 2. Who on earth likes an image, but searches the internet incase there might be a similar image done before, before saying they like it!? 3. They're clearly the same concept, but not the same... So perhaps it's one of those coincidences!?

Yes maybe a museum is better than a private collection but both are private collections really one just made a bit more public possibly depending on the institutions goals. If left in place it would have been more thank likely damaged or stolen by someone else so I don't fault the club for trying capitalize on something that fell in there lap. But it's all debatable whatever path these works take is a whole other part of the process now of the work. We are talking more about the after effect of the work then the actual piece of art.

Great point, we seem to have lost the plot and stopped talking about the piece. My first thoughts were it was outstanding, another great piece of social commentary by Banksy. I loved the placement, the barbed wire heart above was a nice touch, it ties in to his recent barbed wire heart image print. But since I saw the stock photo image used as a reference, i've somewhat cooled down on it. Technically its amazing, but I feel a little odd knowing that its so similar to an existing stock image. That being said, Fairey did the same with his Obama Change imagery. I'm liking the other telephone hacking piece much more, not seen anything like that. Well executed and timely. I'm not sure why he hasn't claimed it if he did that one.

New Banksy?, by Deleted on Apr 17, 2014 0:35:45 GMT 1, Surely if it was meant to be in a museum he would have donated the piece to them direct? I'm told £1m was offered for it before it was put in the cells for the night.Did they take off tape near the hand before sticking it back on? I would have like it to be left on the street for all to enjoy. But as Slammer said it would have been ripped off within hours. I know it's a posh part of Bristol, but there is alway a risk someone from another neighbourhood might see it and do the wrong thing.

New Banksy?, by Deleted on Apr 17, 2014 1:04:21 GMT 1, street art is transitory its very nature is change, it's not meant to be f**king ummed and erred over like a piece in gallery.
It's a smile as you walk passed, a thought provoking statement, it brightens your rubbish strewn street and then it's gone..and then it begins again.
It's not for 'saving', the pictures do that, life goes on, either an individual tries to use it for personal gain or in some ultra rare instances it helps someone make a better life for someone else (where the f**k were all you holier than thou people when WCP was doing his thing?).
If I have to choose between seeing a piece of art on the streets and knowing some kids got a better start to life, I know which I'd choose. Get your priorities right, stop bowing to the institutions, to the state and to what you're supposed to think is 'right', you're doing the exact opposite of what street art/vandalism/graffiti should stand for.
