New Banksy?, by Dr Plip on Apr 17, 2014 9:16:34 GMT 1, So... If any other artist had ripped a stock image off they would be hung up and done up the rear with hot pokers. Banksy does it, all the fan boys offer him their rear. Stay classy you plonkers. Hasn't he used a few stock images in the past? I wasn't aware this was a revelation. Whether it's a stock image used, or a relation/flatmate, I don't see it makes a huge difference. Drawing is hard, but so is spraying the image on the street without getting caught.

“I also will be asking Banksy if he would consider making a limited edition print to be sold in aid of the club. He has done that in the past. I can’t read his mind, but I think he is a person with a generous spirit and I think he would quite like a solution that is good for the whole of Bristol.
“That’s the sort of direction I’m thinking of taking things.”
Good luck with that one fella.

so basically if the plywood was part of the councils property as toast said the guy who took it would be liable for a theft charge if the council pursued it and he'd have to return the plywood, the painting would'nt be anything to do with the theft charge because nobody actually owned it, what a kirfuffle!

New Banksy?, by Coach on Apr 17, 2014 12:00:04 GMT 1, street art is transitory its very nature is change, it's not meant to be f**king ummed and erred over like a piece in gallery. It's a smile as you walk passed, a thought provoking statement, it brightens your rubbish strewn street and then it's gone..and then it begins again. It's not for 'saving', the pictures do that, life goes on, either an individual tries to use it for personal gain or in some ultra rare instances it helps someone make a better life for someone else (where the f**k were all you holier than thou people when WCP was doing his thing?). If I have to choose between seeing a piece of art on the streets and knowing some kids got a better start to life, I know which I'd choose. Get your priorities right, stop bowing to the institutions, to the state and to what you're supposed to think is 'right', you're doing the exact opposite of what street art/vandalism/graffiti should stand for.
Very well said.

New Banksy?, by kittysaz on Apr 17, 2014 12:41:31 GMT 1, Castle Gallery It's a little complicated If it was Banksy's plywood and he put it up there with nails and caused damage to the stonework or surrounding wood he has committed criminal damage TO THE WALL or surround. Simple legislation. If the plywood belonged to the boys club or council, and Banksy sprayed on it, again, criminal damage to the PLYWOOD
The theft aspect is more complicated There HAS to he proved by the owner that whoever removed it had an InTENTION to PERMANENTLY deprive So - if the plywood is council property and the boys club took it away with the intention of selling it, then the boys club commit theft and the buyer would be potentially handling stolen goods (different legislation)
Phew. I've just gone back to training school.

Clever lawyers would I am sure get around this... When the owner of a piece of art on a wall decides to sell it it's up to them. So if the council own the wood and they decide to sell it, no theft.

New Banksy?, by Unica on Apr 17, 2014 14:00:43 GMT 1, It looks like someone is producing some merchandise from this image after the piece has been turned over to the council. Probably the threat of being charged with criminal damage and theft helped him have a change of heart. I will be looking forward to supporting the club and buying a print if one is produced. Maybe they could work with WCP, he would be the man I went to if I was going to knock off a quality print.

Big benefit to the museum, should get quite a few new visitors.
Edit:
So does anyone think the police carting it away and delivering it to the museum will set a precedent for future works?
