Router long way away
I have fitted a 24 switch switch thing
got around 18 Lan cables flying around the house to various rooms (that was fun fitting)
but wife can't do her face book on her iPad in the front room as wifi does not reach
Wifi extenders are shit (or ours is) as it keeps dropping out
So my plan is to buy an access point, plug it into one of the Lan sockets in the lounge and voila happy wife.
Question- what one works? prices vary from ยฃ20 to cisco big boy money

Cables.. I only use om4.. But then they're 16gb fibre ...(and that was a joke btw)

Your router s/b at least 300mps (even dual antenna with 2.4Gh and 5Gh.) direct link through your sockets is the way to go though (also try Argos or Amazon) and maybe hardwire a couple of gadgets that way as well?
I use the InSSIDer app (free) on my phone/tablet to go into different rooms and see the signal strength.

Went into maplins and saw the techy guys (they always hurt my brain with their talk)
anyhow bought a rather tacky looking 300mbps wireless N TP Link Router that the guy suggested for ยฃ40
Plugged it into one of my extension Lan sockets, turned it on, found the password underneath the box, typed it in and.................................................... it only bloody worked !
Tonight is my night bro, its my night...............

You can either get ones that require leads to use at both ends, or one that acts as a wireless extender..

Was thinking of getting some myself, so good to see they are effective! You can also get additional plugs to go elsewhere in the house, just uses the wiring in the sockets for signals...genius!
PS only the plug thingy near the router needs to be attached to the router by cable... You can also get "pass through" versions so you don loose the use of the socket if they are limited. Plugin thingy can have normal plugs plugged into them...

Hopefully some kind soul will help you with this, as i do not know.
you could run a long cat 5 type cable from your router to where ever you need it
The downside of this is forgetting the cable running down the stairs. This could cause an accident or even worse, embarrassment

This is connected to the router with the same type of cable as you would connect your PC. The second "home plug" is put in any other electrical socket in the house. They connect to each other using the mains electrical cable already installed in your house and use it to send the signal from the router. Basically no need to run extra cables .... If you search amazon for homeplug or powerline you will see starter kits with two plugs thingies. You can add more if needed....

Will this method work with an old uphone?

another question, when on an iphone in the settings it says wifi etc theres one under that which says MOBILE, whats that all about? is it a way of picking up the internet while out shopping etc?. hard wire the device or WiFi extender??
Hard wire: buy a length of cat 5 cable and plug into the router and the device = length of cable across the floor between the rooms.
Buy a tp link plug and plug it into the nearest socket to the router. Buy cat 5 cable hopefully no more than 1.5m and plug it into the router and 'plug' put the other 'plug' near the device you need internet on. Buy another cat 5 cable and connect the ug to the device. This uses the house elec wire system and saves trailing wires across the floor of the home.
Wifi extender: plug the WiFi extender onto the area that needs WiFi eg upatairs. Two solutions the plug picks up the WiFi that it can pick up and 'boosts' it. Or as above plug near router cat 5 to plug and then extender plug is wired through house elec system.
Note: the upstairs and downstairs have to be on the same 'ring' main to work, is not on separate circuits. Even if on the same floor the sockets need to be on the same circuit. you can test by flicking the MCB switch on your fuse board.
