This is not a Banksy shirt., by Deleted on May 8, 2014 21:47:00 GMT 1, It's all very surreal.
Wouldn't it be better to get permission from Banksy to use his art on a T shirt even if it's non profit?
What about people who buy one and re sell it for profit etc?
Based on what I know of Bansky and copyright law, I didn't feel like permission was necessary. When he had his "store" on his old site, he posted hi-res images and encouraged people to take them to their local print shop and have them printed. So I think he's fine with people using his art for their own personal use. We're essentially doing the same thing. Except with t-shirts, there are setup costs. For each of us to do just one shirt, they would cost $120 each. I don't think he'd mind us combining forces. An assumption, yes. But one I'm comfortable with. On the legal side, we're covered by fair use on the grounds of: 1) The shirt is social satire, poking fun at the entire BNE fiasco, and the street art scene in general. At least that's the intent of "This is not a Banksy shirt." 2) It's not for commercial gain. 3) It has no effect on the potential market or value of the copyrighted work. As far as people buying them and reselling them for profit, good luck with that. I don't see much of a secondary market for t-shirts some random guy made as a joke. Thats true indeed. I remember he had some images where people could print them out onto things.
The costs of screen prints are lower if printing a quantity and a lot of places like zazzle lets people make their own t shirts and phone cases etc etc etc and I think the tees are printed by some kind of dot printing technique or similar fine jet printer.

This is not a Banksy shirt., by Deleted on May 9, 2014 17:35:49 GMT 1, Producing and selling a copy of a BANKSY Artwork on an Anvil Shirt, reminds me of this piece he made in 2012 for the olympics in London… Maybe it makes more sense to print the sweatshop kid on the shirt, or replace the animal heads of the current design with some sweatshop labourer from Anvil! But at least they are not harmed by the organic fabrics;-)

If you can show me evidence that they use child labor or anything like that, I can switch to an American Apparel blank for the same price. It won't be organic and it'll still involve manual labor. But if anyone didn't enjoy their job making it, at least they'll have been overprivileged Americans

This is not a Banksy shirt., by Deleted on May 9, 2014 18:53:10 GMT 1, randomname I just know that you can get a standard blank Anvil Shirt in Germany for round about 2,50 EUR when you buy 100 of them. And the German distributer still makes a very good profit by selling it. Thats why I can't believe that they don't exploit there labors… But maybe this whole topic is a different issue.

The print shop I'm sourcing them through sells them for the same price as American Apparel (non-organic). And I know those are made in America by union workers. But if anyone is uncomfortable with Anvil, I'm happy to switch to American Apparel. I've printed on them before and it's a very nice shirt. It just won't be made from organic cotton.
Feel free to discuss. We have the weekend to reach a consensus.

It won't be organic and it'll still involve manual labor. But if anyone didn't enjoy their job making it, at least they'll have been overprivileged Americans I love these discussions. Great that people are thinking about all these issues. Not judging or commenting on the supplier you have chosen but just to give some general food for thought, I'd suggest the assumption should be that goods from less developed countries are made in poor, unfair conditions.
There are exceptions but the burden of proof should be on the seller / supplier of the goods. Proof in my mind is not the same as propaganda statements that most companies now make on the subject to mislead customers into a false sense of security. Nike is great at this. They publish huge content about how great the working conditions are, but there isn't much to back those claims.
If a company is genuine in their attempt to provide livable wages and safe working conditions then they will get impartial, independent monitoring of the facilities performed regularly by groups like or recommended by Human Rights Watch. Anything less is just marketing bull. Last I checked Nike had refused any such independent inspections.
There are companies out there that are trying to make things ethically. I think if you can afford it, it is great to support those often small companies.
Two of my favorites (they don't do custom shirts so no help here but thought I would plug them for the good work they do)
Discerning Brute makes some cool stuff. Their blog also show lots of other options for the ethical man.
vaute couture makes women's wear. The founder seems like an amazing women.
Good luck with the shirts!

This is not a Banksy shirt., by Deleted on May 11, 2014 9:29:27 GMT 1, also - I'd like to know if anybody knows - Was this meant as a protest to eating meat, or to the factory meat system? There's a big difference in my eyes, even though I'm a vegetarian. I personally always viewd it as a message against the latter, but could be wrong I always thought it was questioning our relationship with animals from childhood. Kids love animals have animal toys to hug and comfort them. Then slowly, unspokenly we kill them and eat them. Help save the Seals.

This is not a Banksy shirt., by randomname on May 11, 2014 23:44:01 GMT 1, I just bought envelopes. It looks like overseas shipping will be $18.50.
If no one minds, I'd prefer you send it as a normal payment, so $19.50 to cover Paypal fees. That way I can print the shipping labels through Paypal. Otherwise, I have to cut and paste everyone's addresses into the USPS website, which is a pain.
Shipping for US orders is $6.50. Again, please send it as a normal payment to make shipping easier.
When you send the payment, please include your shirt size in the subject line. That'll help me double check that I'm sending the correct size.
I don't need the money for shipping right away. It'll probably be about 2-3 weeks before I have the shirts. I'll just need it before I send them out.
I'll collect money for shirts through the end of Monday. I'll place the order Tuesday morning. I don't plan on ordering any extras, so if you'd like a shirt, please pay before then.

I think I'll be fine. I have everything pretty well organized. I've double checked the sizes. Like I said before, I'm not guaranteeing they'll fit if anyone orders the wrong size. I'll send them with tracking. And I'm sending them as gifts, so no import tax. It's a little more work than I planned on. More orders than I expected. But I think it'll go smoothly enough.

This is not a Banksy shirt., by randomname on May 13, 2014 2:11:33 GMT 1, I still need a shirt size for Luis in London. So if your name is Luis, you live in London and you sent me money for a shirt, please send me your shirt size.
Also, I found your Facebook and sent you a friend's request on there so that I can message you and ask you your shirt size. If you thought that was some strange person stalking you, you're only partially correct. If I had to guess, you look like a medium. But my guesses are usually wrong.

If you thought that was some strange person stalking you, you're only partially correct. If I had to guess, you look like a medium. But my guesses are usually wrong. er..... 'Thought'?, LOL Randomname, love is funny old thing!.
Just fooling.
OI LUIS!, answer the doorbell fella!.
I still need a shirt size for Luis in London. So if your name is Luis, you live in London and you sent me money for a shirt, please send me your shirt size. This is not a Banksy shirt., by randomname on May 13, 2014 14:34:59 GMT 1, Hopefully I'm not opening up a can of worms here, but a member asked if I could do a second version in another color. The reason being overseas shipping costs almost as much as the shirt and I can ship two shirts for the same price. So he wanted to add a second shirt to his order, but wanted it to look different.
This made sense, of course. But I thought it would only be fair if I opened it up to everyone. So I'll hold off on ordering the shirts until tomorrow. If you'd like to order a second shirt, or change the color of your shirt to light blue, send me a message with your real name, shirt size and the color or colors you prefer.
Also please note this is a photoshop mockup. The real shirt may look a little different. The white part of the image won't print, so the light blue of the shirt will show through. I'm not sure how this will work with all the colors of the illustration, but I think it'll look close to this.

This is not a Banksy shirt., by randomname on May 14, 2014 0:30:54 GMT 1, I have a feeling I'm about to make this a lot more complicated, but hopefully this saves everyone some grief in the end.
I just talked to a friend who designs t-shirts. I told him what I was doing and asked him about the Anvil organic shirt. He had some concerns.
He said they run about a size larger than most US men's t-shirts. That and the arm holes are bigger around. He said he only uses them for shirts intended for a heavier men in their 50s and 60s. So I'm worried no one's shirts will fit.
He recommended the American Apparel 2001 shirt instead. It's a more athletic fit. Probably closer to what you have in Europe.
Here's the size chart. You'll notice it comes in lots of pretty colors. i'd like to keep it to the two I picked to keep things as simple as possible. But if anyone wants a different color, I'll take care of it.
store.americanapparel.net/fine-jersey-short-sleeve-t-shirt_2001
Also, if anyone wants to stick with the Anvil, I can do that too. Just expect it to be a little roomy.
I'm going to PM and email everyone now. I apologize for letting this get more complicated than it needed to be.

This is not a Banksy shirt., by randomname on May 14, 2014 16:29:00 GMT 1, I heard back from almost everyone. Thanks for the quick replies. It sounds like everyone was good with American Apparel, so I'll switch the order to that.
I'm going to put the order in today to get the ball rolling on this. If anyone is late to the game and wants a shirt, send me a PM and I'll try to add it to the order. As long as they haven't printed it yet, I'm sure they can.

This is not a Banksy shirt., by randomname on May 16, 2014 16:22:44 GMT 1, I double checked the orders and submitted it to the printer. My only concern is not everyone included their size with their payment and I had to track those down separately.
It's too confusing to go back and try to match everything up now. So I'm going to list everyone's first name, last initial and shirt sizes here. Please check that I have your order right and PM me if anything is wrong.
I should get a proof sometime today. After I approve it, it's too late to make changes. So I'll wait and approve it Monday to give everyone a chance to check their order.
Brad C., M grey Bryan H., L blue Mary E. D., M grey / L grey Michael J. C., M grey Johannes V. W., L grey / L blue Marie L. Also, I ordered both a medium and large for James S. since I haven't heard back from him on which he wants. So I'll have an extra medium or large up for grabs at some point. Or else a Christmas present for some random friend who'll have no idea what it is.
