They do not 'replace prints' Therefore it's send it back for a refund (sounds like it's going to be a long thing too) or nothing. Really gutted. Guess it's going back If that`s how they pack prints then im sure you wont be the only one who has had the problem. Sounds like you have no option but to send it back, if they have no prints to give replacements its a money back job, what a pain!! (hope they learn by the mistakes for next time!)

I thought the packaging was a work of craft in itselfโฆ but then mine arrived undamaged.
But you're right alternating the layers would helpโฆ it's their first print release, and I think they did a lot right. They just need to refine a few things.
I feel for you Toastโฆ hopefully they'll come through for you in the end?

It looks like the materials were not up to scratch, let alone the way they used them!!! Flat packing takes a little longer but you're right it isn't rocket science. No 1 rule...whatever you're packing it between shouldn't fold, I know a few delivery guys and they say if you knew how stuff was chucked about and walked over at times you'd panic everytime you sent something. I'm heading off for a few weeks soon but when I get a chance I'll do a thread on how to flat pack easily, I've never had a print damaged to date, it costs a little more but well worth it if the print has any sort of value, peace of mind and all. |

Most things I get mailed from Japan (nice fragile things like Japanese Vinyl and Guitars  are packaged beautifully and solidly.
Many of us had this experience with the Peter Blake print recently released through the Museum of Wales...

I know myself that if I send something its got to be 100% bomb-proof, whether it's flat or in a tube. Utter f**king morons.

I know sometimes accidents can happen during shipping no matter how careful you are, but the packing on display in this instance was just asking for trouble!!

Counter Editions provide a cardboard large heavy duty protective flat portfolio and even include a pair of gloves. Baltic and Tate provide something similar. More familiar galleries that do it properly that I know of include the likes of POW, White Cube, Emin International. For goodness sake artists and galleries do the simplest part of the process properly.

So will see what's happening. there is a crease running from top to bottom right in the middle of the print. if your going to use so many layers of cardboard to flat pack somthing, they should have the lines in the cardboard running a differnt way on each layer not all the same way! Just bends as easy as 1 piece. 
Mine was packed in different layers and every layer was running in a different way... Perhaps they made a mistake with yours?

But I am not sure that he is here at te moment, he is gonna launch this week a new real game for phones. But maybe he will tell you to see with the gallery...
Opening a case on Paypal is a good solution : you are protected. You have to send the print back with a registrated number ( Paypal only works with these registrations numbers and receipts as proofs of shipping ) .
The gallery accepts the return that's good ( they wrote the contrary, that is, for me, very dishonest ).
How much Japan post office will they refund them ?! if it was a private company ( as DHL the best ones ), I would trust them, but if it is as Colissimo in France, every party will loose his time ( there is always in " small caracters " some clauses that give reason to the mail companies, even if you, they , took an insurance. it could be long also. Galeries as sellers or quidam as me, do not like when a case is opened : at the end, Paypal can close their account or give them restrictions.
I think , that it is the good and normal choice, even if the gallery swears that they will manage, it will accelerate the process : they have to refund you at the reception of the print ( signature is a proof ) , and they have not to make you wait ( about Japan post office refund ) to pay you back ( it is their problems, not yours ).
Maybe I am wrong.. ( anyway, Invader will answer you, I am sure ).

It depends, I had 2 claims that did not work ( selling some art with English people ) and I had to refund the buyer ( that's the paypal law ) ; I made twice a claim to my post office( it is to the sender to make a claim ) , they made investigations and the two times the answer ( silly answer, how to know if an item is damaged if you don't open the package ) was : " the receiver should refuse the package at the delivery " ( after there is no proof ). One good point for Toast, is that the galery accepted the return. |
