Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by Agent Provocateur on Jul 29, 2014 22:51:36 GMT 1, It was a great time. Read through the thread, and also the Adam Neate street drop thread if you can find it. Good times. I've read that Neate thread 3 times now. I'm surprised it was never turned into a movie. That and the CYW release thread.
A lot of the Neate London drop thread pages were printed in the book documenting the show. A good memento of a long night!

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by Deleted on Jul 29, 2014 23:02:34 GMT 1, The Boti thread was great the pics were better. it was a bit like watching wood eaten by worms, you never see them but its always happening. Just to mention that HBO are making a documentary about Better Out Than IN, they are making it using peoples posts from Facebook / Instagram and Twitter (with permission), Robert Stevens (nice chap) has licenced them some of his material to use. His youtube channel has the BOTI videos that he did at the time.

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by Hairbland on Jul 30, 2014 3:45:05 GMT 1, I've had similar enthusiasm for other prints I dont own as well, and will continue to do so . isn't that the point - to enjoy these artists work? As an art forum allowing reactions of all sorts is appropriate, from fan behavior to criticism and everything in between. As long as it doesn't venture into one becoming the troll under the bridge.

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by ABC on Jul 30, 2014 10:38:33 GMT 1, I like it...........With three children and a wife who no longer enjoys looking at "naked women, skulls, kids with guns or war" this is very wall friendly and fits with my needs. I do not own any other MW prints so this may be the first.
As you get older your desires change, this applies to me and my art collection. The only Banksy I have on the wall at the moment is Trolley Hunters as the others no longer fit in with surroundings. Compare this to 2006/7, I must have had 10+ on the wall (not sure if it that was about image but more about wanting to own the artists work) Art is subjective and would be boring if we all liked the same. If you have followed MW topics of late they are mainly about the โfreeโ Chinooks print, what does that tell you? For me it says a fair few people are interested in making something for free and less about image.
It has taken a long time for MWโs work to break through, if he is following a formula that people do not like, so what, others will. Painting in the same style/process is what builds an artistโs portfolio, you only have to look at the arguments with Hirst (Who I like).

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by kfroms on Jul 30, 2014 10:53:04 GMT 1, abc:
to me this rather sounds like: I have to like it as the art police ( wife and kids ) do not appreciate the stuff I would prefer to put on the wall.
Pretty sure most of us need to compromise at times but putting a ballerina on the wall? Isn't that a rather sad solution to the 'problem'?

As an art forum allowing reactions of all sorts is appropriate, from fan behavior to criticism and everything in between. As long as it doesn't venture into one becoming the troll under the bridge. I'm all for art discussion and critique. What I don't enjoy is someone questioning my motives (I don't have one) or integrity especially since all I'm offering is my opinion of this piece. Would I face the same criticism if I said I didn't like the piece? I don't like everything. I just really like this image. I'm not a negative person so if I don't like something I usually choose to not say anything rather say something negative, since who am I to tell someone else their taste is wrong?

and i'm still waiting for someone to illuminate why the like this print. It's pretty and my gf/wife will like it is all i've heard. Those aren't invalid reasons, just fairly shallow ones.
Fed, you said you talked to martin at the show, i haven't spoken to him in awhile and would love to know if you asked him about his inspiration, what this art means to him, where his creativity comes from? Maybe Martin has a deep meaning with these prints or maybe he just likes making pretty wife friendly images that sell.
There just doesn't seem to be much depth to his art, but again, i ask, if someone could explain that would be great but I won't hold my breath. And yes, to pre-empt the question, people are allowed to like art just because it's pretty. But the critiques in this thread (and all his other recent releases) show that many want more than that from their art.

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by Deleted on Jul 30, 2014 11:29:24 GMT 1, Nope didn't work for the show and have zero connection to GP. If I did you think I'd be selling my prints on my own? guess I could see how'd you'd might gather that from that post though so sorry for any confusion
I did talk to Martin but there was 100 other people in their so didn't have time to get into any conversation other than "how's your trip to the states been" etc
I like it because I like it. I like the composition, the execution, the use of colors and the mixing of "classical" art and urban art. I like how the ballerina takes up the space that it does. I like that it makes me smile to look it. There's no way to pinpoint precisely why, but this image bring out happy, and some sad emotions. Not all pieces do that. This one does for me

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by Art Fan 2011 on Jul 30, 2014 11:33:50 GMT 1, Not sure why people have to justify why they like a piece of art, if they do then then do!
I for one think the fact that a girlfriend, wife, daughter or even husband will like it is more than enough of a reason to buy something! Martin`s work is very easy on the eye, colourful and family friendly hence why his fan base is so large now, he appeals to a wide market which is why is becoming so successful. Sure its not for everyone, but im certain more people like his work than not!

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by 11 on Jul 30, 2014 11:48:55 GMT 1, Hey Fed - I wouldn't worry one bit about having to justify yourself - unfortunately you get twats in every walk of life that just live their life in the bitter shadow of jealousy
I read that you actually did a favour for a fellow forum member who asked you to hand deliver some gifts for him / her. The upside to you was that you got some personal time with the artists - big up to you for doing that in the first place and I hope you did get some benefit yourself in doing so
You had a unique experience and I am pleased for you and appreciate you sharing it with the rest of us

I joined this forum because I wanted to meet like-minded people. None of my friends know anything about this scene and I wanted to meet others who shared similar interests with me. For the most part, everyone has been great, except for some people who seem bitter and angry and just want to spoil it for the rest of us.
now let's get the thread back on track!!...

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by Graffiti Prints on Jul 30, 2014 12:39:34 GMT 1, Why does any artist have to justify any image with depth and deeper meaning, do all the biggies? Banksy and co.
No they leave that to the end user
I sure each piece speaks to them in some way and I suppose it's what it says to you when you are deciding If to buy or not!
I personally dislike long artist bio's and explanations on a image I find all that a bit too arty and poncy!
For the record as I hate to see people getting stress for a nice gesture
Fed did being presents for people and I was so busy I hardly spoke to him which is a shame although his chocolates on behalf of a UK customer were ace!
That goes for all visitors to the show my one regret is processing sales when I should have been talking to the people who made the journey!
That's one of the things I hate about the internet, no face to face contact and why we will do more shows round the world.

That's one of the things I hate about the internet, no face to face contact and why we will do more shows round the world. it was a great show, and I can't even begin to imagine how much work was put into it and how stressful it must've been for you. Can't wait for the next one. Glad you liked the chocolates. They've been my favorite since I was a little kid

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by sgolby on Jul 30, 2014 12:51:45 GMT 1, I like it...........With three children and a wife who no longer enjoys looking at "naked women, skulls, kids with guns or war" this is very wall friendly and fits with my needs. Well said

Martin Whatson En Pointe Print Release, by eschiff on Jul 30, 2014 13:17:26 GMT 1, wow people really don't like it when others critique a piece of art they like huh? All of the sudden you're bitter and angry. Who needs depth and meaning when you can have pointy feet and tags! If only she was wearing a baclava we'd have urban art nirvana. GP, you can't think Banksy's work would be thought of in such regard if it had no meaning. If it wasn't making a statement.
Anyway, off to my bitter angry art club meeting...enjoy your pretty ballerina
