David Bowie, by Deleted on Oct 31, 2014 23:07:05 GMT 1, So as a huge fan of Bowies work before 1980, I never really listened to much after that. The first album I bought was 'Lets Dance' and I was so into him before even listening to it I went out and bought pretty much everything before that. So until last week when I had IPod trouble I had never listened to the whole album. I have to say I love it. I quite liked 'the next day'.
I just wondered what albums are worth listening too after 'Lets Dance' ?.

David Bowie, by Hubble Bubble on Nov 1, 2014 0:39:15 GMT 1, I was never a Bowie fan but, since discovering Spotify, I picked up on the Ziggy Stardust album. Jeez Louiseโฆ what a sensational album!
Anywayโฆ that's enough Bowieโฆ I'm now working my way through Rolling Stone's Top 100 albums of all time. Zep and Beatles aren't on spotify but that's okay as I have all their stuff anyway.
Onwards...

David Bowie, by mutatis on Nov 1, 2014 1:28:44 GMT 1, As a Bowie fan everything is worth listening to, but not all albums are worth owning.
Why? We might be different ages and Bowie might have touched our lives in different ways. Whilst I was aware of Bowie from about 75 (Space Oddity); for me, the beginning of my love for Bowie was hearing the single Sound and Vision on the radio constantly in early 77 as a kid. It just sounded so different to everything else.
Having produced album after album filled with pure songwriting genius, it is pretty hard to sustain that level consistently - an affliction that strikes all the greats such as Stevie Wonder, Prince, Kraftwerk, the P-Funk mob .... (courting controversy here) .... So you've mined the richest seam, however dig further and you'll still find some nuggets. They might not work as albums in their entirety - but as Bowie is truly a genius, he can be relied to come up with the goods albeit not as consistently as before.
Heathen in 2002 - is probably the strongest post Let's Dance album. The most recent album The Next Day had a great cover but left me underwhelmed.
Outside mid 90s is solid, without being exceptional. 'Hallo Spaceboy" - yes please.
Earthling in 97 saw Bowie go all drum & bass with some interesting results. In parts a little bit obvious, like your Dad "getting on one"
Buddha of Suburbia is worth listening to even if you only listen to the title track, which is sublime.
Tonight (1984) was the album after Let's Dance and suffers because of that but still has one good track Loving the Alien.
Never Let Me Down has two good tracks - Time Will Crawl and Glass Spider - otherwise it's pretty ropey.
The era has passed when possession of the physical artefact was all-important. Nowadays there are so many ways to try before you buy, so you don't have to commit yourself.
In summary if you listen to them all. you'll find things you like. As a fan already, it will be less painful for you and will only serve to help you appreciate Bowie even more. Happy listening
Disclosure: my top 5 Bowie albums are Low, Hunky Dory, Aladdin Sane, Ziggy, Station to Station.

David Bowie, by johnnyh on Nov 1, 2014 1:54:49 GMT 1, Great Track Nordic. Must say Lets Dance was the last album of his zi ever bought. Have everything before that and bootlegs etc. saw him on the zlet's Dance tour a couple of times in the UK and South of France. Still listen to the early stuff and loved the Eno Iggy work he did as well as all the Thin White Duke period.

From there you can't go wrong if you stick to before 1980

You can totally forgive the fact that Bowie fell off in later years, because no other artist has EVER had a consecutive run of form like this:
Space Oddity The Man Who Sold The World Hunky Dory The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars Aladdin Sane Pin Ups Diamond Dogs Young Americans Station To Station Low Heroes
+Iggy Pop/The Idiot +Iggy Pop/Lust For Life

I took these on me phone before getting told off. These projections were on a very grand scale

Well... If you like that kind of stuff, it's form. If you don't. It's shite. I don't know Mozart's work so well, but I'd wager his output is pretty much up there...
PS -- only joking!!! But beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder, no?

These projections were on a very grand scale I reserved my sneaky pics for some hand-written lyrics. Amazing thing about the exhibition was the way in which you soon began to realise how canny Bowie must be as he had meticulously kept everything over the years as if he knew one day that success would be his and he'd need to preserve his legacy. Only shame was the lack of credit to Angie for her role in his success.

Can't bring any other artist to mind who would do that, um, Miles Davis maybe. Whereas Mozart, on the other hand, was just knocking out the same old tat year after year. -----JOKING!!!-----

David Bowie, by mutatis on Nov 1, 2014 2:56:48 GMT 1, I don't agree - but I love the sentiment Ah you reccon Lady Grinning Soul from Alladin Sane? I'd take that, Time or Drive in Saturday. I am sure you could dance equally as well to these and convey the emotion in these songs

David Bowie, by mutatis on Nov 1, 2014 3:40:37 GMT 1, Well... If you like that kind of stuff, it's form. If you don't. It's s**te. I don't know Mozart's work so well, but I'd wager his output is pretty much up there... PS -- only joking!!! But beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder, no? I think the impressive thing about this sequence of albums (Pin Ups was probably the weakest ; perhaps something of a filler) was Bowie's willingness to experiment, to change styles and go with new ideas. Can't bring any other artist to mind who would do that, um, Miles Davis maybe. Whereas Mozart, on the other hand, was just knocking out the same old tat year after year. -----JOKING!!!----- Pin Ups was definitely the weakest because it was covers .... so David is not to blame

David Bowie, by Deleted on Nov 1, 2014 10:50:27 GMT 1, I love this thread. I knew this would happen. Talking about albums I've been listening too for over 30 years. Please feel free to carry on.
However if anyone can come up with any other suggestions than 'Heathen' and 'The Next day' since 1983 that would be cool too.
On a side note anyone want one of these. Done from the original 'Cracked Actor' molding and hand painted. Official items too. Under ยฃ300 I think Aladdin Sane is ยฃ250 plus postage.
