Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by Pete the Post on Sept 21, 2022 12:20:32 GMT 1, Yep 👍 guess it depends on how much someone wants to actually sell their piece. Like anything any price can be attached, god knows I have clients looking for stupid amounts sometimes. We all call it burying heads in the sand. Will soon see how they all go If someone desperately needs to sell, then yes buried heads. But if they just want to try for a good price, its protecting their piece in my mind. I nearly lost a treasured piece to a crap reserve, got lucky and it got no bids so i still own it. Although, i did get a fair few “we got an offer of x, y or z after the event, mostly lower than reserve. No chance lol. now i either get a reserve im happy with or i dont even bother.
For me a good reserve is a dam site lower than youd expect to get, but not low enough to break your heart if you end up on the low end.

Reserve is pretty much always the low estimate.
It cant be above that. It can be lower. (which only needed pointing out for the pointless word count)

This will be 2008 all over again, but a lot worse.

Thanks for the links, Rich. Been searching for an U/S Barcode for a while. Lowest quote so far is £27k. I would’ve jumped on that one for 18k. By chance do you know if the upcoming Tate auction will be live streamed?

Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by JFCC on Mar 30, 2023 9:07:13 GMT 1, For Bonhams use hammer price plus 35.3%
This is made up of the buyers premium (first 20k is 27.5% and then 26% to £500k) + VAT on the premium + ARR 4% (4% to 50k, 3% to £200k). That assumes all were from the UK (I didn't look) as if they are from overseas seller an extra 5% has to be added to the hammer for import duty.
The prices at Bonhams are always a car crashes as they always in a mess of a catalogue but Donuts at £25k and GWB at £55k were record lows, I am genuinely surprised there were sellers at these prices, but great for the buyers, well done!!
Applause (U/S) £11k = £14.9k all in Golf Sale (U/S) £13k = £17.6k all in Flag (Signed) £30k = £40.6k all in Monkey Queen (Signed) £32k= £43.3k all in Girl With Balloon (U/S) £55k= £74.4k all in Strawberry Donuts (Signed) £25k = £33.8k all in Pulp Fiction (Signed) £70k = £94.7k all in Grannies (U/S) £11k = £14.9k all in Barcode (U/S) £18k = £24.4k all in J&J (Signed) £38k = £51.4 all in
