Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by Oski on Jan 28, 2015 21:30:16 GMT 1, They have the same overall release of 750 (B&W 100 LA, 150 POW signed, 500 POW u/s)...never mind the fact that the 400 missing LA prints may be discovered and flood the market. While there is much less signed B&W vs. color, I think the color just looks better IMHO and is one of my favorite Banksy prints. Modern Multiples only printed 100 prints for the LA show. The remaining 400 were printed by POW. Here is a video of Richard Duardo talking about printing the LA show prints. Www.Printingbanksy.com Great info, thanks!

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by Amber Halo on Jan 28, 2015 21:46:14 GMT 1, Estimate on the Baker always struck me as quite artificially low -- way under the list prices for canvasses at his last show (though the works at that show were mostly larger sized than this one at auction). 55K out the door for an older Baker canvas seems shockingly affordable (dare I say) in an overall auction that seemed overheated.
Many of the Banksy went for some nutty money. And the Harrington really seems to have gone at an exaggerated level. But I suppose this was all part of the Laz master plan.
The Charming Baker wasn't a canvas, it was on board and was possibly just a study. One of the biggest results in today's auction.
True, it is oil/acrylic on board -- not canvass, though I think that difference matters very little in terms of market value. What matters is it is an original 1 of 1 painting, not whether it's on canvass, board, aluminum or linen.
I am curious by your suggestion that it might be a study, though. Why would you think that? I wasn't collecting Bakers in 2008 (wish I fucking was)... but this piece is of a larger size than I'd think a study would be (132cm x 86cm) and also used as a print later on I believe.

While there is much less signed B&W vs. color, I think the color just looks better IMHO and is one of my favorite Banksy prints. The signed POW B&W are only an edition of 150 so they are 5X rarer than the color. It was a bit off at the auction but as we see auctions can be emotional and many could have based their color bidding on the B&W results that proceeded it with both being signed. The B&W prints are more scarce, but that does not mean they are more desirable.
Scarcity is the main factor in the supply side of the supply v. demand that determines pricing. All it takes is over 5X more people to find the color version more desirable to make it worth more than the B&W. In the case of this print, I think if you took 100 average people and asked them which one they prefer it is quite probable that over 80% would go for the color version.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by andyroo0312 on Jan 28, 2015 23:09:45 GMT 1, Early morning here and i just pulled up all the results for the auction and i would just like to send my condolences to any of the folk that thought this might bring prices down. Not sure why anyone would of thought that in the first place? I thought the estimates as far as auction house estimates go were on the high side once you add the crazy buyers commission. Good auctioneers work off emotion so as long as you hyped it well and get the people in the room and online human nature kicks in and when that happens i have seen people start to cry once the hammer goes down and they just realise what they have done i.e. spending a extra couple of grand that they never intended on spending on a piece that they had their eye on. Human emotions tend to boil over in a well hyped auction. Remember the only well run auction is the one that is hyped to its limit and every seat in the auction house is full, so i would say this was a good auction for everyone concerned just not the punters that thought this might end up getting them that Banksy they couldn't afford yesterday tomorrow. Personally i think these results are great as i am not in the Banksy market, ( i got priced out of that last year) I am grateful and happy with what i have got..

Forget artist resale rights payments - how does Banksy pay his taxes on money paid for original works he sells. Who do you write the cheque 2 and how is the money split/hidden with business ventures he is a part of - pest control etc?

Easy. All money is paid to his agent (or PC / POW). Then his agent pays him to his real name. And he pays taxes under his real name... The tax office won't know he's Banksy though.

So, could you view accounts at companies house and review who the receives the large payments from pest control or agent - etc? Does the real Banksy have to also declare how the money is earned? I guess it's a lot more complicated to hide tracks - If said tracks need to be hidden?
