Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by andrewd on Feb 6, 2008 9:23:37 GMT 1, Does anyone know why the radar rat was pulled? Presumably because it was unsigned? It looked right to my uneducated eyes except for the absence of the signature. A pow mistake or a fake?
When I looked at it I thought they had hidden the signature under the mount board. I checked mine and it is signed by the tail. If I'd paid ยฃ500 for an unsigned print back in 2005 I would have taken it back to be signed. ยฃ500 was alot for a signed print in those not so distant days.

Bidding at auction is an adrenaline rush, maybe thats why he seemed like he was buzzing.

Thanks to Romanywg for the programme, and chat about his plans.
Great news for Nick Walker collectors, his star is rightfully rising. Also an eye watering price paid for a Space Invader!
I'm off to interview Guy Denning for Auction Saboteur.

more money than brains and too much booze. some ppl dont use ebay and others dont care about the price difference as it was the process that counted. To be honest I was surprised there werent any(?) Banksy LA prints in the auction esp a signed morons I'm sure a s a"joke" auction these wanker bankers would have paid top dolla!

I'd love to know what the artists make of all the publicity; on the one hand they need to get their work out there - but on the other hand they must be in disbelief about their respective successes after an event like this (i.e. street art vs. mainstream).
Anyway...must send back my black Centurion card back to AMEX.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by jynormous on Feb 6, 2008 12:26:19 GMT 1, I think its rather sad that these prices were reached.
Its now not art for the masses, rather art for the riches!
People don't even think about the images anymore, they just buy something because it was done by "insert name here."
Its a shame that art that is meant to be viewed by everyone, can now only be viewed by those who it was never intended for.

Amazing... Im gobsmacked... I dont get to drop in here much due to other commitments, but the Bonhams link the forum sent me has made me return to the fold
As a few know, Ive 'a few' pieces of 'Urban Art' LOL... but I guess I now should worry about quite what my living room is now worth... eeek.
Anyway... This Radar Rat... Mine was unsiged when I picked it up from POW back in '05 and I didnt notice - I had an arm full of stuff from them that day.. ahh happy days when ยฃ1300 would buy you some Dface and Faile canvases along with some signed prints from the same as well as some Banksy prints... That day I had the last signed Flying Copper they had... Anyway I digress... The RR pirnt... I sent mine back and they got it signed and sent it back to me. So not all were signed... in discussion with POW at the time it seems Santas Ghetto was so mad that this kind of slip up could occur...
What was interesting was the estimate for this RadarRat print was that it was for 5-7k when some have recently been seen at 25k in galleries and one sold for ยฃ16k on ebay... so they must have assumed an unsigned print was just that, original but unsigned and priced the estimate accordingly...
I wish I could have been there... Its a while since I emigrated and I wonder if we will get a Sydney one...

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by pezlow on Feb 6, 2008 12:59:00 GMT 1, Banksy's Chimpanzee Picture Sells for 228,000 Pounds (Update1)
By Scott Reyburn
Feb. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Banksy's picture of chimpanzees carrying sandwich boards sold for 228,000 pounds ($446,000) in London as Bonhams held its first auction of ``Urban Art.''
The price, including fees, beat the estimate of 150,000 pounds to 200,000 pounds for the 6-meter-wide mural that had once hung in a nightclub in Brighton. The sale coincides with a week of contemporary and impressionist auctions in London, the art market's first test this year amid investment losses.
Bonhams said that a crowd of more than 500 people crammed into its Bond Street saleroom to see the 74-lot auction raise about a million pounds with fees, compared with a lower estimate of around 550,000 pounds. Only one lot failed to sell.
``It felt like a momentous occasion,'' said Mike Snelle of the East London gallery, the Black Rat Press. ``This auction signified a real acceptance of street art.''
Banksy, a Bristol-born anonymous graffiti artist, spray- painted the stenciled ``Laugh Now'' in 2002. The paint-on-wood picture shows a row of chimpanzees carrying sandwich boards prophesying, ``Laugh now, but one day we'll be in charge.'' The work, one of 22 Banksys on offer, was bought by a private U.K. buyer in the room.
``The real story of the auction,'' Snelle said, ``was that there's more to street art than Banksy. The real star of the night was Nick Walker.''
Mooning Mona
Walker is a 39-year-old graffiti artist who lives in Banksy's home city of Bristol. His spray-paint-on-canvas work, ``Moona Lisa,'' dating from 2006 -- showing La Giaconda exposing her bottom --- sold for a record 54,000 pounds with fees, against an estimate of 3,000 pounds to 5,000 pounds.
Walker's 2007 limited-edition print, ``The Morning After (London Version),'' fetched 5,400 pounds compared with an estimate of 400 pounds to 600 pounds. The print, showing a view of the Thames and the Houses of Parliament, had been sold last year by the Black Rat Press for 295 pounds, said Snelle.
``The Apprentice,'' a mixed-media-on-cardboard painting by London artist Adam Neate, sold for 43,200 pounds and Dan Baldwin's mixed-media-on-canvas diptych ``The End of Everything'' sold for 24,000 pounds, a record for the Brighton-based artist. Both paintings dated from 2007.

I have a feeling the BRP print show and walker solo show are both gonna be crazy!!!
