Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by moron on Feb 28, 2019 23:17:42 GMT 1, I have professionally worked with Bonhams many many times. I would never put anything up for auction with them as I've seen their storage and handling facilities and in my eyes are not up to par. Weird that this is being sold through them as I'm sure other avenues hold a better clientele and grouping for this piece. I met someone who told me they used to work for Bonhams a few years ago. They alledged that some items put into auction were never bid on by the public and that Bonhams staff bid on the items themselves and bought them at the low reserves before the doors opened to the public.

Does not make a lot of sense if it's an open floor physical auction as the auctioneer is on the floor with all auction attendees taking bids. If they were to publish in the auction catalogue for a floor auction, how would they stop clients attending the auction and not bidding? It would make for outrageous fraud, hard to believe true with a a top tier auction house running a published floor auction?

Bonhams deals with a lot of low hanging fruit...damaged prints, rubbish antiques, and the like. Not to say that they don't also have well formed auctions, but many aren't for high rollers per say. By comparison, Sotheby's has their own conservator and conditions dept, whereas Bonhams does not. This is on top of conditions being noted by the contracted shipping/handling company for Sotheby's. Multiple levels to confirm and inspect conditions on works.

They are one of the most highly regarded auction houses in the UK, after Sothebys and perhaps Phillips. They are not some 2-bit company out to make a quick buck.

I'm sure Sotheby's have a great conditions department however, Bonhams are still a major, very well regarded UK auction house who have commanded numerous record Banksy results which for sure have featured 'high roller' bidders. Serious collectors do not tend to discriminate if they really want a piece of work. I'm certain this thread subject auction is going to go high, my guess over 300k gbp as they have marketed to a lot of serious art world players that I know of. Not sure why a lot of folk here like to bash Bonhams lol.

They are not some 2-bit company out to make a quick buck. It's perfectly fine to disagree. I still stand by the fact that they deal in a lot of damaged prints and poor antiques. They also auction works in excellent condition. I am simply making an educated comparison based off of the resources I have seen put in place to both condition and store items of varied mediums. My comments were intended to lend a perspective that is truthful by my accounts of dealing with both auction houses. And I agree with you, they are not out to make a quick buck - they are established and have a long, historic foothold in the auctioneer world. Lastly, my statements come solely from working with California branches of both Bonhams and Sotheby's, which to be fair shouldn't be spread to their business practices around the globe.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by juveniled on Mar 3, 2019 12:24:46 GMT 1, Artcurial are interesting (thanks for sharing!) although if I auctioned an OG or low edition piece I think i'd feel safer at one of the 4 big major auction houses? 616k euro is though a great price for a stencil on cardboard.
Basically this Crucifix piece has 4x stencils on cardboard plus the sculpture so it will be very interesting to watch what happens at this Bonhams sale. I'm guessing this will be very competitive. Hoping they do a live stream of the auction, is that standard at the big auctions does anyone know?

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by irl1 on Mar 5, 2019 12:39:15 GMT 1, Large impressive sculpture with 4 meter thick rope and 4 hand painted stencils - should do over Β£250k, but it probably won't as it's the first one! You could be right, the box is probably worth the 100k on its own.
If they get the right two bidders it should do 200+ but then its not very wall friendly.
It would make a cool swing for the kids

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by Gunny on Mar 5, 2019 16:17:35 GMT 1, It is interesting to hear the comments etc on this. I am guessing those who have actually seen it in the hotel will be the high guesser's and the people who havn't the low guesser's. For those saying most would prefer a canvas, I would agree, however, that would apply to people who would want to display a Banksy work in their house. I wouldn't really want to display it in my house, however a lot of well-off people would love to display it in their big barns, loft spaces hanging from the rafters, perhaps in an arty games room etc. Then there are all the people with money investing in art, they will see this as a good buy anywhere under 200k. There are not many Banksy originals on the market and the Banksy original market has a long way to go..... it has only just recently started to get going........
On a side not, i spotted this on instagram......... TOP RIGHT

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by Gunny on Mar 5, 2019 16:27:00 GMT 1, It is interesting to hear the comments etc on this. On a side not, i spotted this on instagram......... http://instagr.am/p/Br0EP_Tj1SG Whatβs the big deal about putting this up in the home? i don't think it's a big deal, it's just a bit big and awkward with the rope. You would need a decent space to display it and most people don't have the space.

The estimate is 70 to 100. What would the reserve be, 50/60.
Cost 40 + 8 vat.
If it only sold for the reserve the seller would be sick.
