Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by Deleted on Mar 5, 2019 17:40:39 GMT 1, Very tricky to call this one, could go either way. Yes very tricky. There are 26 of them The estimate is 70 to 100. What would the reserve be, 50/60. Cost 40 + 8 vat. If it only sold for the reserve the seller would be sick.
70k less fees=61, cost 48 made 13k, not bad for doing fuck all but lobbing out the money for a year. Is it about a 25% return?
pays for lots of coke and hookers. Thanks Mr Banksy sir

Anyway i can't see it going under 100

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by juveniled on Mar 5, 2019 18:06:41 GMT 1, My guess is 2-300k for sure. This is a unique buy never seen before with a Banksy. Both a large iconic sculpture WITH an artist box featuring 4x hand painted stencils!!?? How does anyone think this would go under 100k? That is just nonsense.
As an example various cardboard based single stencils have gone for way over 100k in the past and someone even paid 280k for this TINY pretty boring rat canvas last year....
www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2018/contemporary-art-day-auction-l18025/lot.106.html?locale=en
This is a no brainer for a wealthy collector as in 5-10 years these will no doubt be 4-500k+
I can also easily in years to come see this getting displayed at MOMA or The Broad etc. It perfectly represents the whole Walled Off Hotel concept which is also going to be seen as an art piece in itself in any future artist retrospective.
I'd for sure buy this for a high number if I was a minted art investor. It's very low risk.

You'd be better to wait for the next sellers which will no doubt happen this year as a guess? I just think talk of this not being a significant sale is just silliness, there's also not really been a decent OG / or low edition piece up for a major house auction since the shredding. Seems like owners are holding back now, with good reason. Just the fact this is first to auction says it will fly, I reckon. It's a great piece - I'd imagine they will have quite a few people fighting over this one.

I wish I did! I do have an edition canvas though, Iβd actually trade as I love this as an art piece.

Apprecaite the enthusiasm for this piece but your comparing originals on card that can be hung on the wall against a carboard box with stencils on the sides. Apples and oranges perhaps?
The religious nature of the work will also go against it as far as a lot of people are concerned. You try convincing your other half that a the Son of God on a massive grappling hook is what's going on the lounge wall... The subject matter of QV and CWSB isn't to most people's taste for interior decorating purposes and does hold the values back.
I suspect there will be at least two people who want this so it should do well. However, I am not expecting this to reach the heady hights that some people on here are predicting.
It will be very interesting to see what level it reaches in any event.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by Winter on Mar 6, 2019 15:06:56 GMT 1, It is unbelievable the prices that some people are predicting - prepare to be shocked as this is going to do extremely well. The whole art world is watching Banksy right now and a piece like this is going to be very much wanted! There are serious art collectors out there with bucket loads of money! Feck, i wish i owned this...... I'm not convinced the whole art world are watching Banksy. You go to the big shows - Frieze, Art Basel etc and there is no Banksy at all. I still think they're unsure about him and I've heard lots of people in the 'art world' found the shredding of the GWB painting tacky.
That said I think there is a market for these pieces. This piece is impossible to call. No idea at all.

Respect your points however, serious art collectors - especially when it comes to art investments - I do not believe care if the stencils are on a box or canvas as regularly items bought at these kinds of numbers remain in storage for investment purposes. The subject matter I believe helps this piece as it's a conceptual play which is strong. I'm also certain conversations with your other half and interior decoration do not come into the picture here when a serious collector is dropping over 100k on art. Plenty of Koons, Haring etc sculptures are very weird for the home but sell for crazy money.
I've decided i'm going to bid as a couple of friends have pooled in with me but I'm not hopeful as our ceiling is not that high. I know other serious collectors who plan to goto this auction so it could turn into a shark tank. Time will tell in just a few hours!

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by Harveyn on Mar 6, 2019 15:47:59 GMT 1, i say it doesnt hammer over 200k if anyone wants to make a small friendly wager...
I would have thought given the recent purchase price and the fact its a sculpture from an edition that a hammer at Β£150k+ would be a strong result.
I would love the piece in my collection for sure.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by aumi on Mar 6, 2019 16:01:12 GMT 1, I think it will be sold within the estimate. It is a great piece as it is perfectly representing the walled off. However, there might be a lot of people hesitating to hang a piece like this in their home.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by The Italian One on Mar 6, 2019 16:15:51 GMT 1, easily over 200k and probably over 300k. it is the only signed edition (only 25)available for purchase from the walled off hotel, and probably the best sculpture and very strong meaning. This work fully represent Banksy's style.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by Deleted on Mar 6, 2019 16:16:23 GMT 1, Apprecaite the enthusiasm for this piece but your comparing originals on card that can be hung on the wall against a carboard box with stencils on the sides.Β Apples and oranges perhaps?
The religious nature of the work will also go against it as far asΒ a lot ofΒ people are concerned.Β You try convincing your other half that aΒ the Son of God on a massive grappling hook is what's going on the lounge wall...Β The subject matter of QV and CWSB isn't to most people's taste for interior decorating purposes and does hold the values back.
I suspect there will be at least two people who want this so it should do well.Β However, I am not expecting this to reach the heady hights that some people on here are predicting.Β
It will be very interesting to see what level it reaches in any event.
Interesting.
Looking forward to the auction
There is a live feed I hear
Good luck !

Truthfully i didnt really like it as the grappling hook on its own. Very different to me from anything else i have seen from Banksy. The box makes it for me. There is a lot of work gone into the hook. jesus is all sprayed up and need to see close up detail.

Besides the work done to create it there is really a deep meaning using the grappling hook (crucifix ) to get over the wall meaning religion as a weapon to save us and be open minded instead locking yourself (wall)to religion ideology and war.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by Unica on Mar 6, 2019 17:29:40 GMT 1, Well if it's any indication of things to come the large Sid Vicious canvas at Sotheby's failed to find a buyer, with a reserve of less than Β£200k. Small edition of 3, I saw it the other week and it had some presence. Didn't appeal to me, as I've never really liked listened to the Sex Pistols. That being said it was a classic Banksy style. Anyone know what the bidding went up to? That being said I've seen one of these Sid Vicious canvases fail to sell before, might just be the image and I think the estimate was pretty bullish.

It's not even signed by Banksy. And doesn't seem to have any meaning behind it either. I can't see how they think it's worth 200k plus.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by lee3 on Mar 6, 2019 17:38:10 GMT 1, I think it's really important to keep seasonality in mind as this is traditionally warm up season although it's clearly changed the past handful of years into prime time. From my vantage point, after reviewing todays Sotheby's day sale over coffee, it was rather dreadful across the board. Far more bought in lots than expected from the likes of albers, oehlen and kippenberger all of whom were all featured prominently at the start. As the sale meanders along there are buyins from dumas, warhol, banksy and hirst although these were far from their best examples. I thought that gem of a Haring would fare even better as it pops on the wall. Taking all of that into account and keeping in mind that this is Bonhams and not Sotheby's, probably best to temper enthusiasm.

I think the general reading of the piece is that it is anti-religious. Viewers can obviously see what they wish, but Banksy's ethos does not seem aligned with that soteriological interpretation.
