Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by Unica on Mar 6, 2019 18:39:58 GMT 1, Well if it's any indication of things to come the large Sid Vicious canvas at Sotheby's failed to find a buyer, with a reserve of less than £200k. Small edition of 3, I saw it the other week and it had some presence. Didn't appeal to me, as I've never really liked listened to the Sex Pistols. That being said it was a classic Banksy style. Anyone know what the bidding went up to? That being said I've seen one of these Sid Vicious canvases fail to sell before, might just be the image and I think the estimate was pretty bullish. www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2019/contemporary-art-day-auction-l19021/lot.258.htmlI'm not surprised it didn't sell. It's not even signed by Banksy. And doesn't seem to have any meaning behind it either. I can't see how they think it's worth 200k plus. I might suggest its signed in stencil and is a homage to Andy Warhol in the repetition of an icon image on canvas. Warhol didn't sign all of his work.

Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by lee3 on Mar 6, 2019 19:12:53 GMT 1, I think it's really important to keep seasonality in mind as this is traditionally warm up season although it's clearly changed the past handful of years into prime time. From my vantage point, after reviewing todays Sotheby's day sale over coffee, it was rather dreadful across the board. Far more bought in lots than expected from the likes of albers, oehlen and kippenberger all of whom were all featured prominently at the start. As the sale meanders along there are buyins from dumas, warhol, banksy and hirst although these were far from their best examples. I thought that gem of a Haring would fare even better as it pops on the wall. Taking all of that into account and keeping in mind that this is Bonhams and not Sotheby's, probably best to temper enthusiasm. How do you know when the auction house buy in? If it doesn't reflect a "lot sold" for price with premium listed underneath it, it didn't sell. Sometimes it can be confused with withdrawn lots by the seller if the house failed to recognize it properly but that's the exception as opposed to the norm. I'll give Bonhams credit as their sale is faring better than I expected.

Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by aumi on Mar 6, 2019 19:23:49 GMT 1, I think it will be sold within the estimate. It is a great piece as it is perfectly representing the walled off. However, there might be a lot of people hesitating to hang a piece like this in their home. Not too wall friendly in the end like I said

Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by 19818914 on Mar 6, 2019 19:33:35 GMT 1, Completely honest question. If one were to purchase this edition privately. Is it fair for a purchase price of 68k without factoring the premium that Bonhams would have attached?

This one didn't sell so obviously the seller wants more...

Question isn’t if it is fair but if it is likely.
And it isn’t
This piece was probably in the wrong place at the wrong time, but most of all owners would have no incentive to let go of theirs for a measly margin

Understandable. I can’t help but think some owners would rather use that cash for other priorities in life.

Only 2k more to reserve. And does the auction house charge the seller fees aside from the premium they make?

Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by Dexter Bulldog on Mar 6, 2019 20:02:48 GMT 1, I really don’t necessarily blame the auction house here I think this piece is a challenge for a number of reasons mentioned, mainly how to display it and it’s context. Combining those two actually it may be initially difficult for (others) to decipher it from just a regular crucifix with a rope, depending how high up it is. Whereas cwsb jumps out what it’s trying to tell you. I’m not into the blatant religious statement pieces but I’d much rather have that print than this even if there were 1000 printed and only 3 of the hooks made. People saying 200, you have to think not many people would buy this over a gwb print

It’s just tiring. Banksy is so much more than a girl with balloon.
