Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by irl1 on Mar 6, 2019 21:14:55 GMT 1, I'm confused on how these auctions work, if the reserve was a bit less than the low estimate and it failed to sell, does that mean it was chandelier bid up to ยฃ68k to try and get it over the line? It's all a bit of a let down, I was actually hoping the bullish pundits would be correct, on the bright side a white NOLA sold for over ยฃ50k this week at Forum auctions. I just think the subject matter and the awkwardness of the piece wasn't appealing too many people, and the box wasn't enough to pull it over the line. I'm sure the owner of these can still sell them privately for a nice profit on the secondary or they could enjoy them on their walls as I expect was the reason they bought them in the first place. You can be certain the reserve was the low estimate in this case as it is most of the time. As the sales approach the houses will try to get consignors to lower their reserve below the low estimate for works with minimal interest. Obviously this consignor did not lower their reserve or it would have sold at 68 IF the 68 were a true bid. As a habit I always negate any bid on an unsold lot as they are more often than not simply a chandelier. Important to note that the houses have 30 days minimum to work the unsold lots for post sale bids where the consignor may or may not lower their reserve. I've even seen lots that went unsold at auction that sold post sale for more than the high estimate so anything can and does happen. Nice post lee3.
I would think it was the house bidding as if it was a real bidder their not going to lose it for the extra 2 grand

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by qest on Mar 6, 2019 21:15:18 GMT 1, Thank-You I am not happy being right, but if people dont know its for sale they will have a problem bidding on it have I mentioned how much I hate Bonhams? You should buy what you like and not what you think you will make money with... They're not mutually exclusive. But if you can drop ยฃ40K on art that you like without regard for its future value, more power to you.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by 19818914 on Mar 6, 2019 21:19:15 GMT 1, Thanks. I thought this would be out of reach but itโs a strong work for 90k usd. if you have 90k USD to spare for decoration in a kids room then im sure you can sdd a few quid to it, go speak to Bonhsms and you never know.
I was trolling about the kids decor. I wasnโt serious about this work until I saw how accessible the price is.

I would also tend to think someone will approach the house to make a deal. I suspect the owner would have no problem selling on the secondary for a modest profit, maybe not quite as much as some suggested. I've always been interested in how you have mentioned that it's important to place work in the right auction a the right time. Case in point, lets not forget the small Get Real canvas that sold for ยฃ400k not that long ago.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by Winter on Mar 6, 2019 21:51:03 GMT 1, I donโt think anyone will pay over what this reached in the near future, itโs documented and I doubt another one on a different day in a different auction house will set the world alight. If I had one to sell Iโd be putting it away for a year or two before trying it through auction.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by Gunny on Mar 6, 2019 22:07:57 GMT 1, Don't forget at 70k, it would be close to ยฃ100k for any buyer with buyers premium, that's double cost price. I would still think buyers will be weighing this up and making calls to Bonham's tomorrow, as at ยฃ100k it's a great price for an editioned original by the man. It's a really decent piece of art, just wrong timing, wrong auction house, wrong auction type and a hard sell as it's not that pretty! I would be surprised if you see any come to auction any time soon, which is good I think! Most probably there will be 2 or 3 touted around on the secondary by buyers desperate to get their money back - good time to buy!

I think its win win, glad it didn't got for the 68
sellers fees at say 10% they would have cleared 60, then the buyers fees at 30% around 20k. so the house would clear around 28k
seller would be gutted if it had of hit 70k as he could get more for it on eBay
also not sure as it didn't sell what happens in a year or so when another is chucked in to auction, does it show as not sold, or does it show the low estimate and not sold as its certainly tainted it short term

If i was the seller i would be straight onto them to ask if they could remove it from the unsold lots.
I really like these myself, but wrong auction house. Very surprised it didn't hit the 70. Really this won't do too much damage as it was too early to auction one. Sotheby's and Phillips have very different clients to Bonham's and i'd say that's where we will see the next one.
I had a full set of 25 hand signed Dali lithographs with the original box. These were very large and most of the sets were broken up and sold single. (Rare to get the full set) To cut a long story short they were in Bonham's and on the day of the auction i got a call from them to ask would i drop the reserve to 8k.
Like a dick head i did, and that's what they sold for. (no bids on the day) My one and only time to use Bonham's .

If i was the seller i would be straight onto them to ask if they could remove it from the unsold lots. I really like these myself, but wrong auction house. Very surprised it didn't hit the 70.ย Really this won't do too much damage as it was too early to auction one. Sotheby's and Phillips have very different clients to Bonham's and i'd say that's where we will see the next one.ย ย ย I had a full set of 25 hand signed Dali lithographs with the original box. These were very large and most of the sets were broken up and sold single. (Rare to get the full set) To cut a long story short they were in Bonham's and on the day of the auction i got a call from them to ask would i drop the reserve to 8k. Like a dick head ย i did, and that's what they sold for. (no bids on the day) My one and only time to use Bonham's .
Funny you say that about Bonhams and dali... About four years ago I picked up a Dali lithograph that no one wanted to bid on (reserve was high). I emailed them seeing if they would take post auction offers and the accepted mine. Think I got it shipped to the United States all in for $1,000. I'm sitting across from it now while I'm writing this.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by JJN on Mar 7, 2019 3:50:38 GMT 1, Are you able to ask them to remove the record of an unsold lot? I'd think they'd want it recorded so they can point it out to the next person who brings them a grappling hook in order to tame their expectations. I'm not sure with Bonham's but i have done this with other auction houses. No harm to ask This lot is now "burned " all auction activity being genuine interest is suspect so the price will be negatively affected, from last highest Bid.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by juveniled on Mar 7, 2019 7:21:06 GMT 1, I went to the auction, did not end up bidding as the BP made it too high for us. This was simply the wrong audience, Bonhams have way too much of a conservative scene of collectors. This in time will do a lot better at one of the other edgier auction houses. I was wrong though I expected this to fly - but as many have said, wrong auction, wrong audience.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by Unica on Mar 7, 2019 8:49:50 GMT 1, My guess is 2-300k for sure. This is a unique buy never seen before with a Banksy. Both a large iconic sculpture WITH an artist box featuring 4x hand painted stencils!!?? How does anyone think this would go under 100k? That is just nonsense. As an example various cardboard based single stencils have gone for way over 100k in the past and someone even paid 280k for this TINY pretty boring rat canvas last year.... www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2018/contemporary-art-day-auction-l18025/lot.106.html?locale=enThis is a no brainer for a wealthy collector as in 5-10 years these will no doubt be 4-500k+ I can also easily in years to come see this getting displayed at MOMA or The Broad etc. It perfectly represents the whole Walled Off Hotel concept which is also going to be seen as an art piece in itself in any future artist retrospective. I'd for sure buy this for a high number if I was a minted art investor. It's very low risk. Just had a thought, why don't all the members who think this is an amazing investment piece that failed to sell because it's in the wrong auction put together a consortium of investors and place an offer to Bonhams. What an opportunity to pick up the piece for them. I'm sure someone could put a group together on here relatively quickly as there seemed to be many members who thought this would fetch 200k plus. Maybe even get the box and cut it up in four panels and sell separately or place in art storage for a few years and wait for the demand to build. It's not for me but seemed to be coveted by many on this forum.

If I'm dropping 35k on art... I want to hang it, not put it in a safety deposit box!. I turned down going halfs on a hook direct for this exact reason, even though I think in 5 years itl be a 200k piece.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by silvermyn on Mar 7, 2019 10:01:51 GMT 1, And the winner was... Manty! Thank-You I am not happy being right, but if people dont know its for sale they will have a problem bidding on it have I mentioned how much I hate Bonhams? Don't blame Bonhams, it's the piece.
Many punters who bought prints at cost could pretty much be guaranteed to sell them for multiple times cost within a few hours, days or weeks. This expectation has transferred to anything Banksy bought from source at cost. It's not a realistic expecation, especially when you're buying something that is not to everyone's taste.
IMHO, no auction house could have sold this for over a ยฃ100k so (relatively) soon after release. Give it 5-10 years and the situation may be different but I don't see this at ยฃ300k for a looooooooooooong time.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by 19818914 on Mar 7, 2019 10:01:52 GMT 1, It seems like the works with young girls in them sell the best. However, I do remember a print in the Robin Williams Sotheby's sale that did rather well. It had the same gentleman hanging on the cross. But this time he had just come from a shopping trip.
I haven't had the pleasure of seeing this sculpture- is that what you call it?- in person but it seems like a much more substantial work of art than a print. I mean, what is a print anyway?
Even his smaller canvases can be quite dull. A simple spray of a Montana can over a stencil will run you quite a bit of cash. This work is bold, it's relevant to his passion project- Walled off Hotel- and will be sure to stir some conversation in my mother's basement.
While I was surprised to see it passed, I am excited to know that it's still accessible.
