I guess I am on the mailing list as I attended the last auction and signed up to bid (although I did not buy anything)!
So - if you are going to Drewetts - sign up - you'll get a free catalouge next time!
PS - Where has the Banksy Crude Oil canvas gone - looks like its not for sale anymore.

Now I know our precious street art is just "priceless" but seriously, prices aren't low considering the age & stature of most of these guys. Anyway if they spike the water again and it goes nuts it will make for better headlines to exclaim that everything went 50% over estimates.
Those Faile boxes are really weak, the Parla is small and everything else I might care about seemed fairly well estimated actually high by my take. I mean that Smoking Silence painting estimated at Β£10000-Β£15000. I'm pretty sure that's the same one or one on wood just like that sold on ebay a year or two ago for about Β£1200. Don't seem that low to me.

which is smaller (60cm square) than one that is very similarly colored that was for sale at Christie's on July 2nd measuring 76cm square and was bought in with a low estimate of 30k pounds sterling. They are both from the same year (2000) but this one is estimated on the low end at a 66% premium to a larger one bought in 2.5 months ago? What gives? To me, that's VERY aggressive pricing on this particular lot (most look good admittedly) but the house and the seller both better hope that pound weakness and Banksy's presence in the news from NOLA carries a BIG premium. It just amazes me today, in the information age, that auction houses do this or it shows you the length that they are willing to go to try to capture market share. To an educated eye, this is silly. My apologies if the seller is on this board as I don't mean to pick on an individual but I do believe it's worth while to highlight inconsistencies in the art market when they occur because the best thing for this market long term is to remain as transparent as possible. I'm all ears and admittedly not an expert on this composition but why in the world is this one worth nearly double on the low end what one just passed for? I've had my eye on this lot since they released the preview and this was on the cover about a day after one passed at Christies.

Now everything that sells through an auctions house has about 30% of total fluff value added to it.
And yes, I've noticed that people in contemporary art are flipping stuff at a pretty quick rate sometimes too. I'm not sure if this is a recent phenomenon but it seems like it.
And Β£2k for a small Parla print? Better you than me.

I certainly don't look at it that way. Auctions show the rest of us what the world is prepared to pay for an item. You're correct in that the seller will net (before taxes) at best 75% of the price on most lots and more often than not 70% or less but from my vantage point, it's certainly not "fluff." It just shows one and all what the market is willing to bear for a piece of art.
