Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by veralynn on Oct 16, 2008 19:52:23 GMT 1, Yeah, the sort of people that are gonna be at this auction aint gonna be affected by the Credit Crunch. Plus I think so many people are taking money out of the banks and are looking for other places to invest it.
Hmmmm the above whilst true to some extent doesn't actually reflect what's really going on.
The people taking money out of Bank's generally dont have a clue about the FSCS, and if they think they do, they are taking anything over ยฃ50K out of Barclays and trotting down the road to HSBC to stick >ยฃ50K in there instead.
There are some that are lumping ยฃ50K into a pension scheme or some kind of protected bond scheme that both offer an additional ยฃ50K of protection and the really wealthy who have more debt than assets don't give a monkeys, those with cash assets acknowledge that a global bank like HSBC/RBS can't fail.
I dont think that any flight to quality would benefit art - up until Q3 of this year the only part of the property market that was showing upside was uber prime, Belgravia, Kensington and parts of St James's at ยฃ5mio+ and now even this market is showing signs of weakness, so even the mega wealthy are now retreating. The contraction/consolodation of the investment banking world is yet to be felt imo and the hedge funds are in the sights of Gordon and his merry band of regulators. The party's over.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by turkey on Oct 16, 2008 21:26:15 GMT 1, Credit crunch is affecting everyone. This Bonhams auction will be down on the last one, the market is coming off (it was always going to at some point), see Sotheby's 2nd October, which coupled with Tuesday night shows where this market is heading. The golden rule, unless your seriously connected, is only buy art to hang on your walls.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by Deleted on Oct 17, 2008 7:47:53 GMT 1, Everyone is affected by the Credit Cruch and as much some may invest their money in Art, most see art as a Luxury product and is one of the first on their list to pull back on when times are hard. The Honeymoon period is over for the recent boom and I dont think this auction will be any different. Though there is a few gems here that will pull in the bids that will disguse our feelings over the current depression. My opinion only!

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by Deleted on Oct 17, 2008 8:04:13 GMT 1, The most ineresting to watch for me is DFace 'Fuck Pop Art', You will have Dface fans, Litchenstien Fans and those who jus love the image (it is a strong one) bidding on it. Its low estimate will also pull in the interest.
Though lot 73 (herakut) and Lot 7 (faile) are two I would spend my money on if I had any.
I hope Lot 87 - NW V for Vandal goes for loads as I may then be able to swap my print for a DSTQ Green ears + cash. ;D

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by rrrich on Oct 17, 2008 13:06:09 GMT 1, estimates on the parla's are incredibly low given recent ebay activity.
given the chance, it'd be the parla (lot 22), word to mother (56), micallef (82) and the neate (104).
never going to happen!

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by Simococo on Oct 18, 2008 10:50:18 GMT 1, maybe, but haven't there been a few failures recently. Including over 40% of lots going unsold at Sotheby's in their recent Chinese / Indian contemporary sale in Hong Kong. Simococo, I agree but Bonhmas attracts a different client base, there are some exceptional pieces which are not surrounded by mediocre crap. And as an aside if the canvas PopTart is the one I think it is, it is a thing of absolutely amazing quality.
I agree that there are some really high quality pieces at Bonhams and I for one will be attending with paddle in hand for a couple.
I just don't expect that there will be the kind of bidding battles that created the kind of surealism that we saw with the Moona Lisa. I think the stalling of the "Next Banksy Movement" has brought a maturity to the market where sensible prices will be paid for great pieces of work by established artists.
I think the pieces by Banksy, Faile, Dface, Neate, Shep, Parla and Micallef will all do fine but outside of Banksy I don't think we will see anything that will reshape the market.
