Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by Guest on Oct 24, 2008 15:40:02 GMT 1, >>>I think everyone agrees that Neate, Shep, Faile, Os Gemeos, KAWS, Parla and Banksy will stand the test of time <<< And how many artist's names roll off the tongue as standouts during the Great Depression? Art is one of the last things people buy in good times and the first thing they cut out in bad times. I have no idea how long this credit contango lasts but even if it is half as long as the one in the 30's, you can be all but certain that both art historians and the public at large will be far more concerned with putting bread on the table than they will about who painted the prettiest pictures in 2009. Not a slight to you or any one of those artists's named as they all are remarkably talented but the way many of us looked at the world even 90 days ago may be a VERY distant memory soon. If things get real bad, I would agree that just one of those artists will stand the test of time. The million dollar question is how deep does this correction turn (the great depression wiped out nearly 90% of wealth over a decade) and how long does this persist (it took the markets nearly 25 years to exceed their previous bull market high to 1953 or '54 (i'm going from memory))? The only thing I know for sure is that with each passing day the global markets (which are discounting 6 months to a year in advance on the collective intelligence of us all intermixed with some government manipluaiton) is that things are going to get worse in the short term, not better.
everyone looking forward to the weekend?

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by lee3 on Oct 24, 2008 16:35:02 GMT 1, Sorry, didn't mean to be the bearer of bad news as I have a lot of art too but one has to be a realist in times like this. And I've spent a lot of time studying the past to try to help me anticpate what the future may hold. There is just nothing on the radar (save for the depression) that resembles this action in any way shape or form. Therefore, it makes sense from my vantage point to at least try to be prepared if the worst were to happen. if it doesn't, then great, we'll all be happy with our collections as the good times take care of themselves. But, if it does fall upon us as it did our grandparents (or parents or great grand parents for some on this board), don't we owe it to ourselves and our famalies to try to be prepared rather than simply ignoring the possibility?
My work is probably getting to me, didn't mean to bum anyone out.

fair point. it'll be interesting to see how much lower prices go. i had been meaning to sell some of the stuff that just isn't going to get framed or make it on my walls but at some of the prices now it's just not worth it.
the idea of taking money out of the bank to invest in art at the moment does sound a bit crazy. i have dipped into the savings for a couple of pieces lately but that is because they're ones that i love and would regret not getting, even if their value plummets. Mind you i am still playing in the shallow end of the originals market.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by Cocteau 101 on Oct 24, 2008 18:19:23 GMT 1, Cash is king, pure and simple, I said it a good few months ago and then turned my back on my own advice (as always). But remember, at times like this when it all bottoms out if you have been wise enough and brave enough the upside will be very positive. That's not greed just cyclical economic sense, if you don't have to sell, don't if you do then sell quickly at the best price you can get. As always people with money, make money at times like these, most of us who are just getting along get clobbered. That's just the way it is. At the end of the day it's a picture on a wall, really there is no real need to own them, that's why galleries, books, and photocopiers exist.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by top on Oct 24, 2008 20:44:51 GMT 1, Believe the auction could have been managed better.. the way the pieces were displayed was 'highly un art like' very poor imo.
Fact remains though, that it was a mixed affair with some anticipated results and some relative bargains. Perhaps I'm just miffed as not having the cash flow to capitalize.
Lee, you are very learned, but don't try and read too much into the future (easy for me to say as I have nowhere near 1% of your investment / collection) ..honestly believe you have made highly astute purchases from some of the finest artists of this period / genres (as have many others ) . Trust your instincts, your certainly going for it, so ride the storm out..positive it will pass with little effect in the long term. Strongly believe Cocteau's words ring true with financial regard..wise words.
Value, regard and respect many people's views and opinions on here. Had to comment, though realise that I am way out of my depth and not in receipt of all the facts.. not sure anyone is though, so I'm sticking my neck out and going with what I feel, and what my senses keep saying. Enjoy 'it'..buy it..love it..keep it..share it..put your face in tomorrow Its collections such as those kindly shared here that got me going, keep me content and make me yearn for more.
Art is wonderful and money will never change that ;D

Hey Lee, excellent posts, but does all this mean that in a couple of years time I will be able to afford that "Jackson pollock" after all?

Good one, though the only Jackson Pollock that will be affordable even in a steep correction does prints for Phish. Damn those are a pair of bummer posts on my part yesterday as i give a quick reread. i was beyond exhausted as i had spent the previous 2 nights doing the nonsense haggling necessary when getting a car in the states. I loathe that sales process and perhaps it had gotten to me. Regardless, that finally concluded late last evening and a bottle of sancerre with the wife helped get my perspective back.
Top, I appreciate the advice. thanks

i agree, hanging is usually the best way to display art, much better than a portfolio anyways
if i had spent alot of money on art, i would consider hanging it on my walls
