Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by edcase on Oct 24, 2008 9:44:09 GMT 1, Not a great night for me, didn't get any of the pieces I wanted, and then was chatting about the results and missed the beejoir surfboard for ยฃ1800. I think that was one of the bargains of the night, it was really beautiful in the flesh and a very relevant piece when you think of the damage oil spills do to the environment. Really annoyed with myself this morning!!!
On the plus side, when you factor in fees, the faile macbeth did well and the Francis did well, both of which are recent additions to my collection, and walker also did probably best / most consistently overall, which again makes me happy with my purchases. Regardless of buying art as a collector or an investor (the former in my case)0 it's still really nice to think of it as an appreciating asset in any case.

Still sceptical about Nick walker, the bidding looked a bit s-duggery

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by Cocteau 101 on Oct 24, 2008 10:33:49 GMT 1, Having a genre based auction like this when the economic tide turns virtually overnight is not a fair indication of the state of the market or this genre in the long term. Quick buck days are over, everyone needs to slow slow down.

Parla Prints? - 1K tops, no more rampant speculation rare bulls**t! Parla Watercolours? Too early to put to auction, end of rampant speculation. Baldwin? - BUSTED! Banksy Prints? - Major major correction! Banksy ogs? - Top ones go for top money! Bast? - Again too early! Miranda Donovan? - BUSTED! Dface did well though.. Matt Small? - would have done better if Bonhams showed the bloody painting!..... Erm... Anthony Lister? WTF is he doing in a auction? Too f**kin' early! In 2007 everyone was a genius, this year will prove who is naked when the tide goes out. PS. Just my opinion, not to be set in stone nor taken personally.....
I think that your sentiment for Lister is actually true of most of the others - too much, too soon.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by Harveyn on Oct 24, 2008 12:35:35 GMT 1, For me it was more about the things that did not sell. Looking at the pieces that sold some works did well and some experience long overdue corrections.
But when you look at the pieces that did not sell it looks like a car crash. Should we be surprised? If you are can I suggest you take your head out of the sand. The current global economic uncertainty effects all of us in every aspect of our life's.
Any lucky American buyers out there?
GBP is in free fall and its getting very messy. Has hit 1.527 today.

I disagree. Good cases can be made for a lot of people not on that list and new faces can yet displace them. We are still in the very early days and anyone attempting to predict winners is just guessing. The auction record and volumes of work aren't there to support most of those choices.

I agree we are in the early days in terms of auction results but not in terms of artistic credibility. I would argue that demand for art in this genre is not big enough to support many new artists to the level of the more established guys I mentioned.

Those artists might have credibility with us but ultimately that's not going to count for a lot. They need to grow outside this small circle and reach a larger audience if they are going to survive which is where a consistent auction record is a good indicator - I don't think anyone has that yet.
This movement is still very young and I can easily imagine some of the existing big names failing to progress and dropping by the wayside while others improve and overtake them. Everyone can make a case for their favorites at the moment which is exactly why this is an exciting time. In a few years when it all becomes clearer the new artists will be chasing a different style entirely.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by Simococo on Oct 24, 2008 13:52:00 GMT 1, I hope you're right but maybe we have seen the best already emerge and the last 10 years will actually provide us with the richest seam of genuine street art. Unbridled love of the art and boundless creativity as opposed to "How can I get my art in a gallery" I sense that commercialism is making it very difficult for new artists to gather respect regardless of the quality of the work. JR is an obvious exception though.

I have yet to see any of their work on the street, just photos, but it looks as stunning as their gallery work. Of all the pieces i have, the herakuts are by far the most captivating - the photorealstic technique of Akut is amazing and hera's style is haunting. I think as more people see their work they will grow in popularity.

And how many artist's names roll off the tongue as standouts during the Great Depression? Art is one of the last things people buy in good times and the first thing they cut out in bad times. I have no idea how long this credit contango lasts but even if it is half as long as the one in the 30's, you can be all but certain that both art historians and the public at large will be far more concerned with putting bread on the table than they will about who painted the prettiest pictures in 2009. Not a slight to you or any one of those artists's named as they all are remarkably talented but the way many of us looked at the world even 90 days ago may be a VERY distant memory soon. If things get real bad, I would agree that just one of those artists will stand the test of time.
The million dollar question is how deep does this correction turn (the great depression wiped out nearly 90% of wealth over a decade) and how long does this persist (it took the markets nearly 25 years to exceed their previous bull market high to 1953 or '54 (i'm going from memory))?
The only thing I know for sure is that with each passing day the global markets (which are discounting 6 months to a year in advance on the collective intelligence of us all intermixed with some government manipluaiton) is that things are going to get worse in the short term, not better.
