Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by Daniel Silk on Feb 2, 2009 17:03:01 GMT 1, Estimate: £800 - 1,200 this must be wrong! this is 1/1 , no? Lot No: 17AR DFace (British) 'A*Hole', 2005 signed with doodle in silver pen, screenprint 47.5 x 67cm (18 11/16 x 26 3/8in). Estimate: £800 - 1,200
I dont think its 1/1 as such I think a few were made like that but of course they all would be slightly different. I should think it will go for a liddle bit more than the estimate.

Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by lee3 on Feb 3, 2009 17:37:53 GMT 1, Hi all, i was away enjoying spectacular northern california dive conditions and wasn't trying to dodge a couple of these questions.
>>> The estimates seem a bit high on some of the Banksy works - don't you agree Lee?<<<
All I know is that they are much closer to the truth than the November estimates. I thought when I looked at the quotes that they seemed very fair. That was a week or two ago. The problem (for auction houses and sellers) is that markets seem to be moving at break neck speed these days and with many global markets down an additional 10%+ for January, your guess is as good as mine. I know for sure that is not bullish for art prices but can't quantify how bearish it is and will just wait and see what the February action looks like. I beleive many of these lots will sell; however, I also believe many of us will be shocked at just how far prices have contracted. I'm sure the auction houses are doing thier job prepping sellers to lower their reserves accordingly based on indications of interest.
>>>interesting, but the art produced now is ANTI-POP .. POP art was in love with consumerism, but this is more arch in comparison. I grabbed a few images from the auction to illustrate my point.<<<
This is an interesting point and it certainly makes me think. On the one hand many major art movements are born or viewed in hindsight as reactionary to a previous movement so this makes perfect sense. On the other hand, I believe this current crop of artistic talent is MUCH more sophisticated at both marketing and collective positioning than any previous group that I can think of. Your point is valid and in many ways it seems to make too much sense.
>>>lee - would love to see a copy of that catalog if it can be scanned<<<
Dave, the catalog that I have is a soft cover book with many pages (from memory somewhere between 40 and 60 pages) and is somewhat similar to the format auctions use to this day with their catalogs. Sorry

The monterey aquarium features all of it (and has even had 3 white sharks over the past 3 or 4 years) but it isn't nearly the same to me. I prefer the balmy 52 degree F water temperatures (and that was a warm day) and remote possibility of some day getting a photo of a grey whale that I can't get at the acquarium.

Big deal, Sealife has conger eels with fresh gaff marks & cuckoo wrasse with fin rot, + you can smoke a fag while you are looking at them if you stand out of the way of the security cameras (something you can't really do underwater is it Lee?)
I can't believe I am trudging around in this cold white shite, while you are hanging around with sharks in beautiful crystal clear waters, it makes me sick....

Banksy's Kate Moss Prints Up For Sale Again
Kate Moss is back on the block at Bonhams Urban Art auction in London later this month. Banksy's images of Kate Moss as Marilyn Monroe are up for sale again. The six prints, each one signed and dated in pencil and numbered 02/20 are estimated to sell for : £100,000 - 150,000 and will be for sale on February 24. Banksy's prints of Moss as the modern Marilyn sold for £96,000 at the Bonhams Urban Art auction in February 2007 and a set of the six prints sold for around $94,000 back in 2006. Will the prints experience a similar upward bounce this year? I'd say these will come in for the low end of the estimate or maybe even below it despite the ongoing popularity of Kate Moss as art muse.

Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by loucastel on Feb 9, 2009 17:25:43 GMT 1, Looks like whoever wrote that got it a bit wrong, it was one print that sold at Bonhams, and it was feb 2008 not 2007, I dont think one print would get anywhere near that price again, this looks like the set in Bonhams is being hyped to the hilt, so it looks like the lower estimate for the set of six is only just over what one sold for, that is some hit!!!
Sale 16259 - Urban Art, 5 Feb 2008 New Bond Street Lot No: 20AR

I concur though that is pretty obvious to anyone following art these days. FWIW, your post piqued my curiosity and I just did a bit of research myself. The one on blue that you posted above is from the set of 50 and to my set of eyes is the most pleasing of all the Moss prints. The set featured in Bonhams this month is a complete set of 6 which is from a group of 20 and there is no turquoise print from this group like the one from 50. For Warhol, the biggest premium would be either Turquoise or Orange Marilyn on canvas (if one could find it) after the obvious gold and I wonder if that same thinking is applied to this image given the similarities. I don't follow the prints all that closely but I do believe that the turquoise and the silver marilyn prints bring in a larger premium to the other 8 images within that collection.
For Banksy, there have only been 2 complete sets of the 20 ever auctioned before although they're less than 4 years old anyway. The complete set numbered 8 of 20 sold for $93k at Sotheby's in Oct. '06. Then there was the complete set numbered 3 of 20 which was bought in at the Sotheby's evening sale this past October (the low estimate was $437k). Since this set (#2 of 20) is offered with a low estimate of $145k, I will be shocked if it is bought in which equates to "only" $24k per print before premium, VAT, and taxes. I think Bonhams (and most of the other houses) have done a good job bringing estimates to a level where the art will sell.
I suspect most of the houses are wading through so much supply that they can give a "take it or leave it" approach to 99% of sellers with respect to estimate ranges and fees.

There are because I sure don't know of any? I suppose there is nothing wrong with denial unless one needs to sell some art and is counting on '07 or early '08 pricing. Yes the prices have weakened and most everyone I deal with recognizes that fact. I suppose the big question is how low do they go and how long do they remain there? I certainly have no ideas with respect to either but welcome the opportunity to collect his work (whereas I was formerly priced out of it) so long as one day, some of the aspects of our every day lives return to what many of us used to refer to as "normal". It gets kind of scary looking at all of the job losses and trying to appreciate just how much money is getting tossed at banks the world over in an effort to try to preserve many of our daily needs.

Bonhams has added to the original provenance description of the 6 LA prints. Footnote: "Provenance: 'Barely Legal', Los Angeles. We are grateful to Pest Control Office for authenticating this lot."

Should edit it to say "Sorry for stating the obvious Lee, but there are still people ON THIS FORUM ALONE who still believe that banksy work will ride out the present climate..."
I am expecting decent sales, but nothing spectacular. I think the drop in the pound might allow some foreign buyers to swoop in, which would be very healthy for the street art market.

"Can Banksy ride the recession? Bonhams clearly thinks so and has included 21 Banksy prints and paintings valued at between £300,000 and £490,000 in its next urban art sale, which opens for viewing on Sunday. The big catch, says Bonhams, is a complete set of six screenprints of Kate Moss in which the supermodel has been given the Andy Warhol/Marilyn Monroe treatment, valued at £100,000 to £150,000.
If that's all too much, then country auctioneers Dreweatts is holding another urban art sale which opens for viewing at Selfridge's in Oxford Street, London, on Friday. Here are another 10 Banksies set to fetch between £142,000 and £210,000, including a single Kate Moss print for £20,000 to £30,000. The escalating Banksy market was caught out last October when a set of six Kate Moss prints went unsold with a ludicrous £250,000 estimate, and a single print could not reach its £30,000 estimate. Since then a number of Banksies have not sold."
