Marilyn Monroe-style Banksy portraits of Kate Moss for sale
Six Marilyn Monroe-style Banksy portraits of Kate Moss will go under the hammer later this month.
The pictures, reminiscent of Andy Warhol's classic image of Monroe, are estimated to fetch up to ยฃ150,000 at Bonhams' Urban Art Sale in London. The prints were produced in a limited edition of 20, in six different coloured formats. Most were sold individually and this group is one of the few to remain in a complete set, Bonhams said. Another Banksy work being offered in the sale on February 24 is Nola Pink, a canvas showing a girl with an umbrella being rained upon. The title is based on an abbreviation of New Orleans, Louisiana, and it was one of a series of works the artist painted in the city to commemorate the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. It is estimated to fetch up to ยฃ80,000. Banksy once confined himself to witty graffiti images which would appear overnight in streets in London and his hometown of Bristol but has now become a mainstream painter collected by celebrities. Angelina Jolie has reportedly spent ยฃ200,000 on his work, while the likes of Brad Pitt, Jude Law and Keanu Reeves have also attended his shows. The American pop star Christina Aguilera once paid ยฃ25,000 for three of Banksy's works on a trip to London, including a pornographic picture of Queen Victoria in a lesbian pose with a prostitute.

Bonhams expects big bids for Banksy's Kate Moss masterpiece
Six iconic images of Kate Moss by the urban graffiti artists Banksy are expected to fetch up to ยฃ150,000 when they go up for auction next week.
The prints of the Croydon-born supermodel, based on artist Andy Warholโs famous image of blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe, were produced in a limited edition of 20 in six different colours.
Most were sold individually making this complete set of prints considered rare and highly collectable.
They are up for sale at auction house Bonhams on February 24, along with other Banksy works as part of their Urban Art Sale.
Gareth Williams, head of Bonhams' urban art department says: "The Urban Art market remains buoyant judging by the interest this sale has aroused once more and we are pleased to continue to offer significant works by the most important artists in this field."
The auction offers a variety of Urban artists whose works have done well at previous Bonhams sales.

I guess a lot might not sell coz the reserves could be set to high, rather than the money not being there to buy them at the correct price.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by lee3 on Feb 23, 2009 17:06:46 GMT 1, >>>I reckon this may be the last occasion to buy low<<<<
May I ask why? Personally, I think these will look like great sells in hindsight as I suspect we've got much further to go to the downside. What do you see on the horizon that I am missing?
I am getting more and more offers by the day and they are getting more sophisticated at trying to separate me from my money. In many cases it is blue chip art at 80% discounts to what they traded a mere 8 months ago. I'm very skeptical given the daily discoveries of massive fraud and theft on the part of bankers and other money managers that have simply stolen via simple/complicated ponzi schemes.
I see no reason to rush to buy something in this tape because I don't believe there is any chance that art will bottom out pricewise and then jump by 30% or more where we all kick ourselves for missing the boat. Instead, I think it will bottom and then sit there for years. It's a good time to be very picky imho and only buy that which you just can't live without. Good luck to those bidding, I'm on the sidelines until the May sales.

Interest rates on savings accounts/ISA'a are non existent; the property market is in ruins. Gold is about the only thing that seems appealing. Other than that the art market. And itโs for this reason; I personally donโt think prices will bottom out as much as some think.

I'm not sure what you're looking for but an 80% correction is pretty convincing to me. I just don't believe there is any chance on it bouncing back in rapid fashion and that is why I'm only buying perfect examples of pieces I've always wanted but never could afford in this environment. Luckily for my wallet, there are none of them available at these sales.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by mash on Feb 23, 2009 18:33:07 GMT 1, its often about 10-15% below the low estimate
That is accurate I think. When they place the estimate on the lot it has to be able to be bought in the region of this estimate so the reserve is always going to be around the low end of this, it certainly wont be higher than the high end.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by arcam on Feb 23, 2009 19:24:10 GMT 1, As for the near future of the market, I know a lot of people with vastly reduced mortgages and savings in bank accounts doing little or nothing for them, and these people are looking to buy one thing right now - art. Not the overpriced s hit that's still being knocked out of 'galleries' every single mile from John O'Groats to Lands End, and not the ridiculous secondary market sector that forums such as this so readily fuel, but outstanding single pieces by established artists either from source or at auction. +1

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by jimbob68 on Feb 23, 2009 21:17:47 GMT 1, Ultimately, I believe the point is that street/urban art is global in nature and unquestionably (in my view) the biggest collection of artistic talent at one time since the advent of Pop. I have my doubts whether there will be half as many artists in this genre that are household names in 50 years like Pop but that doesn't change the fact that I do believe it has the best chance at being the largest art movement since Pop.
Im in full agreement with you there. I see that the Times Critic has turned on the current conceptual artists and is looking for art with some relevance to modern times. I hope there is going to be a gradual change of opinion in the "proper" art world that in goiing back to artists of a more traditional fashion. The urban art scene whiuch I must admit I came to only recently has generated a collectable momentum of its own that is pushing the market in to accepting it as the next new thing to invest in. Its also got the added bonus of not being an intellectuals only hobby, I am more than happy to have the artists we love on this forum next to my older more traditional paintings. Im not in the market for any pickled sharks and unmade beds, its only my personal taste but I think its fairly similar to th e tastes of most people.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by loucastel on Feb 23, 2009 22:02:33 GMT 1, Some interesting points made in this thread, although I for one am happy with the correction in prices at the moment, not just in the urban market but in the art market as a whole, I think the bottom end urban market is still being fuelled to an extent by the relative newcomers to the urban art world, who seem to buy whatever is on offer regarless of the fact that over a short period of time, will question the reasoning behind a lot of their purchases, and what seemed like a good idea at the time will turn pretty stale, so I personally can only see the price of many urban/street pieces continue to fall albeit at a bit slower rate than the contemporary market as a whole, with eventually one or two stand out works from various artists holding thier own, again at a lower rate than we have seen in the past, after all this genre is tiny ,with a tiny following, which cannot absorb all the works on offer.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by jimbob68 on Feb 23, 2009 22:26:15 GMT 1, I think your right and there is a correction taking place that hasnt bottomed out yet. But what it is still more important is that we buy because we want to own the art for good and NOT sell it for an investment. Like I said before I was latecomer to a lot of the artists we all love but because I came to the Bristol ones and Antony Micallef because of reccommendations from another artist (Guy Denning ) I have had a few lucky breaks on this scene!!! This auction is strange and shows some bargains at the same time as some unrealistically high prices. I like the big Denning and think the price is v.fair. The BAsquiat is tempting as well, I love the colours on that. And the Pure Evil "Live East, Die Young', 2008. I think that would look good in a lLondon flat!!!
