Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by dynamixx on Feb 24, 2009 17:13:30 GMT 1, I'm thinking above estimate despite the current climate surely, one of the strongest pieces in the sale, universal appeal, instantly recognisable Banksy, that rarely, if ever comes up for sale.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by lee3 on Feb 24, 2009 17:21:49 GMT 1, >>>What happened to the BME diptych has it been withdrawn or is it in a different auction.<<<
It was at Sotheby's a week or two ago and sold for 43k GBP.
www.artnet.com/PDB/PublicLotDetails.aspx?lot_id=426001696&page=2
Truth be told, i thought that was the best Banksy of all that are/were offered this February (my wife preferred Happy Choppers.) Scary thing is that prices have only come down since that sale as global markets are down another 10% since then.
The last one of these to come up for auction differed ever so slightly in that it had a white circle behind the sid stencils in the center and sold for $195k in february '08. And for whatever reason, i think the composition works MUCH better with the white circle. I'm doutbful that this will even see the low reserve.

I'll guess 25k GBP including premium at best. I'd be stunned to see it go for more in this climate.

I think the truly iconic work will be ok.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by funster on Feb 24, 2009 17:52:10 GMT 1, speculation, speculation, speculation.... Why do people continue to bang on about what may or may not happen? The fact is that no one predicted where markets would be 8 months ago and no one knows where they will be in 12 months - the market may remain at a low for a while or it might grow again sooner than some people expect - no one knows so why not talk about something marginally more interesting than pointless mystic megisims? I don't know if people were following art at the time but after the last art crash many, many people said that the art markets may not recover and if they did that they would never reach the same heights again - remember all that rubbish?
I don't fully agree. Some pieces, artists will never recover, just like some companies never will either. Also the art works that featured at the height of the last boom weren't the one's that featured at the height of the current one. Things change and sometimes confidence is transferred to new markets rather than regained in old ones.

That was much easier to find a year ago. Now, everyone is VERY picky and only wants the best. Further, I believe most people are of the mindset that they will not push anything but the most desirable works above the high estimate as everyone wants to feel like they are getting a deal for their money these days. I think the high estimate in many cases now acts like a ceiling as folks will simply put thier paddle down and wait for the next thing piece to come around.
I think many here are in for a big surprise today with many of the prints and originals being bought in.

Now would be the ideal time for genuine buyers to set the base level prices, instead of what we have seen in the past.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by aginghippie on Feb 24, 2009 19:20:51 GMT 1, For the curious and for comparison. At the Phillips Contemporary Art Evening sale out of 53 pieces 18 went unsold, 7 sold for over high estimate, 7 sold for under low estimate, the remaining 21 sold for within the estimate. With one or two exceptions most of the work that sold over estimate was at the lower end (30k) but sold for up to x3 over the high estimate.
I don't usually analyse auctions but I was interested in this case to try and set the unsold Banksy in some sort of context and I got carried away...
