Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by Deleted on Feb 1, 2015 14:40:44 GMT 1, Uh, you think? Getting the garden ready, oh that is hot. Wonder if he wears a hoodie and a walking stick in silver? Rubber boots? Oh my. He is hotter than Dracula. Edit: even if I try my hardest, I just can't visualise him wearing those rubber boots? What are rubber boots called in English, those green ones of rubber... No unfortunately I can't, I see him as a man always ready to run, sure there is no polices around when he walks around in the garden. Come on brain give me a image of Banksy in... Oh yes, there. It's not easy to run in Wellington Boots. I try it sometimes with the dog. Banksy has silent spray cans. I bet he has runnable Wellingtons too. Do you have to buy two pairs of miniature wellies or do they sell them in sets of four in pet shops?

Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by Rouen Cathedral on Feb 1, 2015 14:46:38 GMT 1, It's a very interesting question.
Maybe it's still all part of the act or maybe it's greed. Or a little of both.

Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by Deleted on Feb 1, 2015 15:10:22 GMT 1, i mentioned this on the Obey thread but thought it could benefit from a wider discussion. Banksy seems to look unfavourably on his role as moneymaker for a small few, so why doesn't he do something about it? "As a kid I always dreamt of growing up to be a character in Robin Hood. I just never realised I'd end up playing one of the gold" If he flooded his own market with new releases he would stop this instantly. And by flood, I mean a real flood. Open editions, reprints of old stuff... Why not? Because it would not make any difference. Eg Sunday B Morning prints of Warhols work are easily available but do not affect the price of original prints. if Banksy released an open edition it would be just that it would not affect the prices of his limited work as they would still be limited and still wanted by collectors. Just as AP's etc demand a higher price why because they are more limited eg there are 25 instead of 500 etc etc. Open editions available on POW website - they are called posters!!

Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by Pistol on Feb 1, 2015 16:05:22 GMT 1, I think both Banksy and pow are damned if they do and damned if they don't. They will never keep e ermine happy. queues, raffles and on line purchases all get moaned about. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on what side you are looking from demand will always outweigh supply. If they release prints at £400 they sell for £3k and if they release prints for £20k they will sell for £25k on the secondary market. Can't remember the original question now but that's my take anyway ?

Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by sgolby on Feb 1, 2015 16:19:54 GMT 1, Sorry folks, but the fact is, nothing would detrsoy the market. Fact is the original drops will always have a value high above and beyond what these secondary pieces would be worth. I for one would love him doing this. I own some Mr. B work, but would love to be able to get affordable prints that i don't own, directly from the source. Revealing his identity?? No one has been able to make any relevant argument as to why that would have any effect, unless he dude was osama bin laden or some other person viewed by the masses as a demon, his identity would have very little effect.

Would make me think he's a bum.

Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by Red Barron on Feb 1, 2015 18:48:39 GMT 1, Bigger question in my mind is how does he maintain the edginess (real word?) required in street art to push new boundaries? The wrecklessness of youth combined with large quantities of sex, drugs and rock n roll have created a lot of great art, books and music. But we all know of los of famous musicians, artist, comedians, ect who have all have gone a bit stale with age, wealth and fame. They don't live the same struggles, have families and priorities change. NYC proved Banksy still has game but how can he each year one up himself? The idea must be daunting and depressing all at the same time, no? Ultimately I think completely tuning out whatever the world says and latest auction prices would make sense.

NYC was a spectacle, but I actually thought most of the pieces were quite disappointing (lacked his usual sharpness of wit and execution).

Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by Deleted on Feb 1, 2015 21:28:25 GMT 1, I always expected Banksy to burn the market at the end of his career, but I do agree that there are probably tons of friends/family with Banksy canvases, etc. that are still hoping they can use them to fund their children's college tuition and things like that, so gotta look out for his own as well. Double-edged sword.

Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by anodyne13 on Feb 3, 2015 1:53:13 GMT 1, As soon as he "flooded" his own market, the people who wanted him to flood the market so they could buy prints at a lower price would immediately no longer be interested. These people are not interested in a low price print, they are interested in a low entry point to a perceived asset with value appreciation potential. Otherwise why not just buy a poster of your favorite Banksy or print a high quality one yourself? The answer is because you are assured it will not appreciate in value and you'd rather have the potential that it will increase in value even if its from an edition of 1,000,000.

This is true. Personally I just copy art I like and put it on the wall. I have a few Borf and Invader 'works' I made myself and I get to enjoy them everyday without the expense. I sometimes get PMs asking me where I got my ''Borf's" from
