Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by Deleted on Feb 1, 2015 9:56:51 GMT 1, i mentioned this on the Obey thread but thought it could benefit from a wider discussion. Banksy seems to look unfavourably on his role as moneymaker for a small few, so why doesn't he do something about it? "As a kid I always dreamt of growing up to be a character in Robin Hood. I just never realised I'd end up playing one of the gold" If he flooded his own market with new releases he would stop this instantly. And by flood, I mean a real flood. Open editions, reprints of old stuff... Why not? He could, and it would be a Banksy stunt for sure. But... he would also make the whole Banksy market collapse and Banksy is Banksy due to the real collectors and supporters from day one. It would probably hurt them to i guess. Just my 2ยข

Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by overend on Feb 1, 2015 9:58:40 GMT 1, Perhaps that might upset all his long term collectors, many of whom bought back in the day purely because they liked the image. It would be good though to have a reasonably priced open ended edition up for sale for say a 24 hour period.

Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by Black Apple Art on Feb 1, 2015 10:51:33 GMT 1, What many overlook is he is the anti-artist "artist", which is why he does exactly the opposite that any artist would do in his position. Higher his popularity... less releases...height of his popularity...zero releases (public)..zero shows. And in the insanity of it all those actions, or lack of action, only fuel the demand and his popularity as he continues with the occasional wall piece and performances reminding us all he's still out there and to keep an eye out for what's next. Expect the unexpected and also expect continued increases in curiosity, wonder and demand. There is a brilliant method to his madness and he is provoking thought, emotion and entertaining like no artist has ever done before him in my opinion.

That will do the trick.

Getting the garden ready, oh that is hot. Wonder if he wears a hoodie and a walking stick in silver? Rubber boots? Oh my. He is hotter than Dracula. Edit: even if I try my hardest, I just can't visualise him wearing those rubber boots? What are rubber boots called in English, those green ones of rubber... No unfortunately I can't, I see him as a man always ready to run, sure there is no polices around when he walks around in the garden. Come on brain give me a image of Banksy in... Oh yes, there. It's not easy to run in Wellington Boots. I try it sometimes with the dog. Banksy has silent spray cans. I bet he has runnable Wellingtons too.

Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by dashboll on Feb 1, 2015 11:39:33 GMT 1, Love the idea Romulus it's only investors who would be annoyed imo, if a real fan paid $10000 for a piece then it shouldn't matter to them, theyve still got the piece on a wall and theyve paid what it was worth to them.
My opinion might be different if I owned a banksy haha!
Edit: reprints would be unfair tho...
Right then, whos going to PM banksy so he can get started?

Didn't say he retired, we all know that's not the case, but a month long residency is a very smart move, nothing for sale, huge exposure, demand goes up.... He can produce what he wants and knows it will sell, guessing the bank account is relatively healthy... Limited pressure. For the life of me I cannot see any benefit to him "flooding his own market", compared to the output of 10 years ago.... He has effectively retired by the looks of it... Weeks and monthly pieces appearing are a thing of the past, leading to the thought that maybe he is just enjoying life rather than bowing to the pleading expectations of those wanting to milk the Banksy cash cow.

I don't think people understand the pressure and amount of work involved in keeping a secret identity. Too many idiots out there keen to make big bucks.

Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by SW20 on Feb 1, 2015 13:02:56 GMT 1, i mentioned this on the Obey thread but thought it could benefit from a wider discussion. Why not? Because it would not make any difference. Eg Sunday B Morning prints of Warhols work are easily available but do not affect the price of original prints. if Banksy released an open edition it would be just that it would not affect the prices of his limited work as they would still be limited and still wanted by collectors. Just as AP's etc demand a higher price why because they are more limited eg there are 25 instead of 500 etc etc.
i mentioned this on the Obey thread but thought it could benefit from a wider discussion. Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by lha on Feb 1, 2015 13:29:13 GMT 1, Didn't say he retired, we all know that's not the case, but a month long residency is a very smart move, nothing for sale, huge exposure, demand goes up....

I'm amazed no one has tried to cash in, plenty of pics out there from the early days and plenty of people that don't like him. Essentially his identity is already out there (apparently....)

Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by mc9205 on Feb 1, 2015 13:35:59 GMT 1, He could, and it would be a Banksy stunt for sure.ย But... he would also make the whole Banksy market collapse and Banksy is Banksy due to the real collectors and supporters from day one. It would probably hurt them to i guess.ย Just my 2ยข Those that supported him from day 1 have all cashed out, or been kicked out - and fyi he never gave a s**t about them, never has, never will. ย Your naive if you think that, there are people here who were there and will remember. ย ย

Why doesn't Banksy flood his own market?, by Deleted on Feb 1, 2015 14:38:06 GMT 1, Or maybe he is just busy living life, enjoying what has happened and what that in turn allows him to do.... No longer needs to get involved in utter lunacy of the expectations of the "art world"...., yup,.......decorating and stuff like that, sheds and getting the garden ready, tidying up and stuff.
He's also busy with his scaffolding firm, what with all this windy weather playing havoc with roofs an' all.
