Antony Micallef | Self | Lazarides Rathbone, by kendo on Feb 13, 2015 20:36:10 GMT 1, Looks like an amazing show - wish I was there to see it in person. I love the thick layers - adds so much depth, movement & texture. Not comparing but reminds me slightly of my KwangHo Shin piece

Antony Micallef | Self | Lazarides Rathbone, by lee3 on Feb 14, 2015 18:19:11 GMT 1, Looking at the layers and thickness of that paint it must have taken months rather than weeks to dry. It will take years. Anything with typical acrylic (there are some fast drying applications however) that thick will develop a soft shell that the viewer could manipulate with their finger and if you press too hard it will pop. i've had a few painting by other artists over the years with thick paint like that and many pairs of jeans have had some wet paint wiped dry. At least two of the artists even put their paintings into freezers to help hasten the drying process and they still took years to firm up to the point that I couldn't mess with it. On the plus, no need to worry about the paint cracking for a decade at a minimum.

Yes - portraits are not original and neither is adding lots of texture, but as H as others realise his work is full of emotion ... about himself or love ...

Antony Micallef | Self | Lazarides Rathbone, by Black Apple Art on Feb 14, 2015 23:47:20 GMT 1, Been following Micallef for quite some time and while I do like some of his earlier pieces, I can't get my head around these "Self" works as they seem like "gore" spin-offs of Kwang Ho Shin, whom I actually really like. While I do see texture I just can't help but see images of mangled gore.com faces that are far to gruesome to post here for comparison but are horrifyingly similar when next to each other . Our minds all see quite different things but just can't shake these myself. Of course just opinions and we all see them differently. I would much rather look at / own a Shin who has made this style his true form of expression and does phenomenal work IMO. Just a thought.

From a personal viewpoint i prefer the Micallef, the paints applied with more directness/confidence imo, a sharper cleaner image, the end result is more potent, i find the shin quite muddy and worked at, personal taste though.
