Martin Whatson Toucan Print , by Hairbland on Feb 23, 2015 0:07:54 GMT 1, The same old story! Bit sad that every MW or GP thread these days results in the same haters! Murrke for one always seems to pop up when a MW thread is about... pathetic isn't it? usually the same few....
obviously something personal too as it goes way further than just critiquing art.
if you don't like it move on, its boring.
I disagree. An art forum should be a place for lively discussion - most art is up for discussion. Think about bands, musicians...same thing. I dig Rothko, my best bud doesn't. We discuss (argue) pros and cons.
The Whatson talk began with his amateur plagiarism and the thought that he was using basic photoshop skills and adding his tagging as a program. A Thomas Kinkade for the street art world.
Many have used critical thinking regarding his work in past threads to great detail - if one has missed those discussions one should seek them out as it 's not a bunch of haters but a group of people here who aren't afraid to voice their opinions. I think there have been dissenters in the peanut gallery regarding most of the artists on here.
That said, I think us "haters" would be fine with either ignoring an image or if surprised praising one - but it seems each new idea in our opinion is worst than the last.
If, as some say, street art should have an edge, then we should be able to voice our opinions. Otherwise somebody should pack a picnic basket, and we can ride our tagged big wheel olde time bikes out to the park in hopes of seeing tagged toucans.
It's possible we are missing something. Does Martin have an artist statement? What is he trying to convey?
Otherwise I'm seeing a ballerina, a zebra, a old time bike, a toucan and so on. What does it mean other than pretty images? I don't get it. Would be interested in a thoughtful response on why it works.
The market will decide.

It goes beyond keeping a style that people respond to it just replicated verbatim time and time again it bothers me even more with an artist who is as talented as Martin but we need growth.

Murrke for one always seems to pop up when a MW thread is about... Yup! Just trying to let people know there are better artists out there... Bambi!
Where in any of your other posts do you throw out an Artists name? Its the same old silly comments from you!
People saying its a forum and we should discuss art! Saying crap about "GP milking the cash cow" or "this is done to death" isn't discussing...
GP is a business, he's out to make money, he will release stuff you may like and Stuff you don't... MW release I'm going for, La Staa im not, but I'm not on the other thread shouting waving my hands saying its shit etc etc!
MW doesn't need to move on from tagging!!! I think its you that should! Find some other artists! There's a lot out there!!!
If you don't like it, move on.

I don't mind mw tagging. I don't think I have said differently. I think you are confusing me with others
However mw should move on from taking a stock image or better yet stealing someone else's work. Running it through illustrator live trace. And then add his tags. All those factors together result in the negative view people have.
If you enjoy an 'artist' like that then great. But many don't.

Martin Whatson Toucan Print , by jlf on Feb 23, 2015 16:03:27 GMT 1, I have to say this one isn't doing it for me, again..... I used to really like his work, but it seems to have not really progressed.
Although surprised how negative a lot of people are, given how inoffensive lot of his work is (ignoring the issues around the source of the original images) , hopefully it will cause his prices to fall so I can finally get my hands on a eternal reflection at a good price

Martin Whatson Toucan Print , by Schrödinger's Chat on Feb 23, 2015 16:52:25 GMT 1, I wouldn't see myself as a 'hater' and I have no issue with Whatson or GP.
I do much prefer his work without tags (love cops, Chinook hearts,ER) then with tags, that said I would love an OSS to go with my ER.
For me his newer work sells his artistic talent short as much as anything, the tagging becomes the focus and not the image, and even if the image was the focus recent subject matter has just been so random it's hard to imagine much of it on people's walls.
Once you have tagged a bird, zebra, ballerina, cello, penny farthing, iguana, Spanish dancer, man on horse etc. Where does it end? You've opened the flood gates to pick an image of literally anything and just add trademark tags to it. I would have thought the artist themselves would find this a bit tedious. I recognise the financial rewards would/could encourage you to just keep going, but the result can't help but end up looking creatively bereft.
anyway I've said my piece blah blah blah we all like different stuff blah blah...

Re the er print As so many have been sold on secondary market now doubt they'll fall below £800 as most buyers have paid way above that , small edition compared to what's pumped out now too There is a tagged chinooks out there too ;-)

Same thing every time!!!
To all the haters, why not try and just not post instead of blatant trolling.
The guy should be championed, he is one of us, an art collecting forumite but he had the balls to take it one step further and it resulted in becoming a successful artist.
Maybe jealousy is behind this, but who knows?

You can draw parallels in terms of repetition with many artists, Pure Evil, Chevrier etc. but don't see that as a flaw in artistic talent. Many artists lauded on this board have photoshopped images, including Banksy.

Martin Whatson Toucan Print , by alittle on Feb 24, 2015 12:29:22 GMT 1, Why get so fussed over what someone else thinks of art that you like? This should not take away from your enjoyment, that is, unless maybe you feel there is some truth to what they are saying? While I don't condone trolling, I also do not feel it is particularly productive to write off all negative criticism as being the product of a "hater" or a "troll". This forum exists for collectors to share their thoughts and opinions, and whether the contributions are asinine or intelligent, it is still within their rights, and that should never be taken away.
This particular artist has become a lightening rod for criticism, and I can certainly understand why. Using other people's work without permission, association with a certain gallery that has fallen out of favour with some, the frequency of releases, the repetitive nature of the work, and the fact that for any given piece, after tracing someone else's work in illustrator, his only real contribution is the "tagging". I use that in quotations, because he is not a tagger. He has no handstyle; it's just colourful garbage.

You basically just described Shepard Fairey
Why get so fussed over what someone else thinks of art that you like? This should not take away from your enjoyment, that is, unless maybe you feel there is some truth to what they are saying? While I don't condone trolling, I also do not feel it is particularly productive to write off all negative criticism as being the product of a "hater" or a "troll". This forum exists for collectors to share their thoughts and opinions, and whether the contributions are asinine or intelligent, it is still within their rights, and that should never be taken away. You make a very good point.
These 'tag' pieces aren't really tags. Interesting to think about when that's his whole 'style'.
