Thought I'd reach out with some insight as to what people have done for art appraisals on their pieces for insurance purposes? What companies have you used (USA based)? What's involved and approx costs per piece?

Looking to insure some works and wanted some first hand advice.

Is there a qualified evaluator, who could give a price estimate on an urban art collection for insurance purposes? There are many for fine art, but do they know anything about this more modern version of art? I have some items in my collection that I would like to have properly insured.

I like them, but they don't value your art, that is your prerogative, and you need to prove or justify the value in the event of a claim.

Yeah thats what I thought. But surely someone offers a service for the value evaluation as well?

Like others have mentioned I use my home owners insurance as they have coverage for all our valuables.

Thank you for that. I do update when galleries inform me of a price increase on some of my more expensive pieces. It is the others I worry about replacing that don't have regular updates from galleries. The ones I have seen sell at an auction for much more than I paid and presume if I need to replace I'd need that much to do so. I'll have to take it to someone.

Can anyone recommend where I can get valuations for insurance purposes in the UK?

I have a couple of Invader prints that I bought for less than the single item limit a few years ago, and now want to make sure they are covered properly, but have no idea where to start.

I've had a look through some threads on here, but a lot of the posts are quite old, so I'm not sure how relevant they are now.

The cost of an appraisal is going to depend on the number of artworks you have to appraise + the level of the appraised artwork. If you have a million dollar artwork this really must be handled by a specialist of that particular artist - and you pay for what you get. If you are appraising prints or lower valued works I would say the range might be anywhere from $150-$300 per piece. 

To save money it is always a good idea to get an appraisal valuation from any gallery or dealer at the time of purchase. Sometimes you can reach out to galleries or dealers you've bought from in the past and they will help you out for free. SaveSave
