Art Appraisal โข Art Valuation for Insurance, by WILLYBKLN on Jan 23, 2017 21:13:28 GMT 1, Hey all!
Thought I'd reach out with some insight as to what people have done for art appraisals on their pieces for insurance purposes? What companies have you used (USA based)? What's involved and approx costs per piece?
Looking to insure some works and wanted some first hand advice.
Thanks in advance =)

Art Appraisal โข Art Valuation for Insurance, by Howard Johnson on Jan 23, 2017 23:35:44 GMT 1, If your looking for a great appraisal service, I'd recommend Dina Brown with the Brown Gallery in LA. Her insurance appraisals aren't the cheapest, but she's incredibly knowledgable and will go out of her way to provide advice on authenticity and investing.

Art Appraisal โข Art Valuation for Insurance, by disturbart on Aug 11, 2017 15:14:48 GMT 1, Does anyone have any idea how you can get a Banksy print valued for Home Insurance, Ive just had a quote and they have stipulated a valuation needs to happen every 3 year as a minimum. With prices rising monthly Im not sure how valid this would be in anyway?

Art Appraisal โข Art Valuation for Insurance, by mrizzle on Aug 11, 2017 15:45:51 GMT 1, Really? I've never found this. I have it as a named and specifically valued item but they merely accept the valuation that I give them. It also has absolutely no impact on my premium. I realise that's not actually an answer to your question however.

Art Appraisal โข Art Valuation for Insurance, by mouser on Aug 11, 2017 16:06:09 GMT 1, I had to get a local auction house specialist to come round and catalogue / value each one for my insurance, they accepted my valuations, backed up by equivalents from galleries as that was what it would take to replace. Was a cockache at the time, but made insurance easier.

Art Appraisal โข Art Valuation for Insurance, by kaos on Aug 11, 2017 18:16:03 GMT 1, I took out insurance recently through a broker recommended here on this forum. They have a banding system 100k, 150k, 200k etc. and you pay according to the band you want. They didn't ask me to have any valuations done. I told them what pieces I have and they pretty much accepted what I said was the value. In the event of a claim I give them valuation from a gallery or two.

Art Appraisal โข Art Valuation for Insurance, by schlege on Aug 18, 2017 6:07:25 GMT 1, Is there a qualified evaluator, who could give a price estimate on an urban art collection for insurance purposes? There are many for fine art, but do they know anything about this more modern version of art? I have some items in my collection that I would like to have properly insured.

Art Appraisal โข Art Valuation for Insurance, by avec art on Aug 18, 2017 14:24:25 GMT 1, probably but it's not something I know about. The sort of proof of value Hiscox require would be similar sales of equivalent artworks from galleries, and any possible recent auction results. These things are probably a fairly good measure of a current market value.

Art Appraisal โข Art Valuation for Insurance, by chevyav53 on Sept 26, 2017 14:49:49 GMT 1, Was searching for an insurance thread and found this one.
Question on valuation, has anyone successfully provided auction results to their insurer as evidence of increased value?
Like others have mentioned I use my home owners insurance as they have coverage for all our valuables.

Question on valuation, has anyone successfully provided auction results to their insurer as evidence of increased value? Like others have mentioned I use my home owners insurance as they have coverage for all our valuables. Not sure if your insurance provider will accept auction records - usually they want some kind official appraisal valuation. Its always a good idea to make sure you receive a certificate like this from any dealer or gallery you buy from. They should also be willing to update these for you.
I would say hiring a professional appraiser can be worth it depending on how valuable your art is. Appraisers start at $150 which is pretty reasonable. They say its good to update your insurance values every 5-7 years. SaveSave

Art Appraisal โข Art Valuation for Insurance, by chevyav53 on Sept 26, 2017 17:43:36 GMT 1, Thank you for that. I do update when galleries inform me of a price increase on some of my more expensive pieces. It is the others I worry about replacing that don't have regular updates from galleries. The ones I have seen sell at an auction for much more than I paid and presume if I need to replace I'd need that much to do so. I'll have to take it to someone.

Art Appraisal โข Art Valuation for Insurance, by stress on Oct 17, 2017 13:13:15 GMT 1, Can anyone recommend where I can get valuations for insurance purposes in the UK?
I have a couple of Invader prints that I bought for less than the single item limit a few years ago, and now want to make sure they are covered properly, but have no idea where to start.
I've had a look through some threads on here, but a lot of the posts are quite old, so I'm not sure how relevant they are now.
Feel free to PM me if preferable.

You can try galleries that specialise in selling the particular artist youโre looking.
In invaders case, you could try the tagliatella gallery. Or Rosh at graffiti street?

I've been quoted various prices, but not done this before so not sure what is normal. Any help would be appreciated. Feel free to PM me if preferable. The cost of an appraisal is going to depend on the number of artworks you have to appraise + the level of the appraised artwork. If you have a million dollar artwork this really must be handled by a specialist of that particular artist - and you pay for what you get. If you are appraising prints or lower valued works I would say the range might be anywhere from $150-$300 per piece.
To save money it is always a good idea to get an appraisal valuation from any gallery or dealer at the time of purchase. Sometimes you can reach out to galleries or dealers you've bought from in the past and they will help you out for free. SaveSave
