Another new Whatson print ? , by noah0189 on Apr 9, 2015 2:51:34 GMT 1, I do really like Martin Whatson, but wish he'd slow down. I think people are getting fatigued by his art. I read an article in VNA a few months back about Nick Walker and how he (against his promoter's wishes) released too much artwork in a short time and oversaturated the market. Less is more (no pun intended). Look at Retna (let's all ignore that he is a shitty human being)...he puts out very few prints and people want more. More people want a piece by him because it is more rare and subsequently his secondary prices have shot up, which also helps tie to a successful artist and expanding fan base.

While you guys may be bored and uninterested, you hardly make up the collective thinking of the art world.
I don't like Whatsons work, wouldn't hang it on my walls, but its pretty obvios he's got a good sized collector base thats not from this forum, and as piss poor and boring as many might find them, he can faux tag his way merrily to bank for a long while yet.

seems to be what a lot of art is about these days.
Whatson makes safe images which look urban enough and OK for most peoples walls.

It's such a shame that he is now recognised more for a collection of random tags and fluorescent colours than he is for his actual artistic work

I liked & wanted the Toucan, have a perfect spot for it. I was on there early and constantly refreshing, the second it came online , I clicked to add to basket it and it was gone. 1min after going up.
Foolishly I went on Ebay to compound my misery and see the 5 that were already up for sale, 10mins after it had Sold Out.
sigggggh.

So people bought to flip and listed them on eBay before even recieving the prints.
That is what a lot of these releases are about. "money"
I doub't the rhetoric that a lot of artists use in their releases that they don't like flippers and are against flipping.
Sure they are.
They are in it purely for the money hence churning out this flippable stuff and they need these flippers which help with their sales of their prints.

Given places like WhiteWalls galleries do a roaring trade, you can see how easy it is for these other independent galleries to sell on Framed Whatsons, Pure Evils etc for ยฃ600 a pop

Another new Whatson print ? , by natstan on Apr 9, 2015 17:30:43 GMT 1, I don't know what I dislike more - the tags itself, the repetitive nature of it in many of his works or the frequency of his print release (including collabs).
Social media has made people immune to negativity in a way. When one post a pic of facebook or instagram as an artist, more often than not people who follow the artist only have good things to say like 'wow that looks nice', 'where can I buy it?', 'your work is incredible'. But the far larger number of people who actually dislike it can't be bothered to even waste time commenting (and probably don't comment in order to be politically correct). This inflates the ego and make one think he (she) is better than he (she) really is.
This community is probably relatively too small to make an impact and it is really unimportant for the artist what we the non-fans think. He just need to cater to his fans. There are many other threads berating his work hence I think it's time for us to stop already. When it reaches its sell-by date, the print releases will slow or stop by itself. But if this goes on, there's nothing to be unhappy about it too. He fulfilled that demand of a market segment.
